Civilization V goes classy with its special edition photo

Now granted, "classy" isn't the first word that pops into my mind when I see little metal men -- in fact, it would probably be one of the last descriptors to come up -- but look at that slick art for the box/book/CD covers. I can picture an aged gentleman smoking a pipe by the fireplace while eying it thoughtfully.

When Civilization V journeys to retail outlets on September 21, you'll have the opportunity to get the $99.99 version in North America. Quite a jump in price, isn't it? This is what the extra cash gets you:

  • 5 metal figurines by Reaper Miniatures
  • A 2-disc CD soundtrack
  • A behind-the-scenes DVD (oh joy!)
  • Most importantly, a 176-page hardcover art book

I for one will be respectfully passing on it. I dig Civilization, just not that much. Where do you stand?

$75 FFXIV CE, $99 CIV5 CE.

Is this the solution to piracy? I don't think it will help.

@pbrand What does a collectors edition have to do with piracy? I know a couple hardcore pirates. And I have never heard any of them say, the reason they pirate is cause C.E are too expensive

Gol-D-Roger, I figured it was a bit obvious.

Collector's Editions stack physical goods in them so that software pirates feel inclined to buy the product rather than pirate just the software. This even happens with regular versions like Pokemon HG/SS's Pokewalker.

In this way, it may be viewed as a way to curb piracy. However... when the price of these editions supercede 75 USD and up, I wonder how much extra money or piracy curbing actually occurs?

I can't see myself getting this. I love Civ, but all that extra crap?

When I first saw the image I thought it was a board-game. I would be all for something like that. An art-book and some figurines? Looks pretty cool but I would not pay the extra monies for what is being offered.

Board game would be ultimate for a CE.

Pretty cool design, the art deco suits the game.

@pbrand I'll tell you how much zero. That's because, CE like this one have nothing to do with curbing piracy And everything to do with pleasing/making money off loyas fans of the series. Some free DLC, an artbook, yeah maybe but not this.

@ pbrand

Deluxe packaging does influence some people to buy the game, actually.

I'd buy it, but not at that price... thing is just never end up doing anything w/ the extra stuff, 'cept maybe look at it once and that's it.

Man, if this was in the $70-80 range, I would be much more interested. But even that would be pushing it. I'm getting Civ V and I'm sure I'll love it, but not quite "sure I'll pay double for it" love it.

Sorry, that's a $75 CE right there. Clearly someone in the marketing department priced this incorrectly.

Uh, for all you saying THIS IS TOO MUCH, you've obviously never bought Reaper miniatures.

what's the point of all the extra stuff if players are too addicted to the game to spend time with the additional stuff?

Civ 5 looks awesome and all, but a 100 dollar CE? I'll just buy the 50 dollar game thanks. Why would i want all that crap when ill be spending time playing the game?

But who knows, maybe they'll sell like the WFC launch DLC characters. Dumbfucks should have waited, and now their going to be released with the upcoming DLC.

I don't think the price is that wrong... Civ music is always great, so I would like the soundtrack and would pay $20 for it. The large, hardcover art book is cool and art books are always my favorite CE addition... throw in the figures and DVD and I think $30 for that stuff isn't bad.

Plus I bet I get it at a discount on amazon.

If it all the academic references the foundations of civilization and city states like the first Civ had I'm all over it.

Who am I kidding, I'm on no matter what...

Incredibly sexy design. I think for a change I'll forgive the boring assortment of artbook/makingof/soundtrack/figurine and go all in for Civ V, especially now that 20 lay-offs make Firaxis a company we should support.

Ask yourself if Blizzard really needs your Cataclysm money to stay afloat.

MOST SPECIAL EDITION CRAP IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND JUNK THAT COLLECTS DUST. BESIDES, THIS STUFF IS MADE IN TAIWAN FOR PENNIES.

I'm pretty much the biggest Civ fan ever... but I don't need little figurines or a making of DVD. I'd probably buy a medium special edition with the soundtrack and maybe the art book.

At face value that seems like a crazy price. The regular game is going to retail for 49.99 US so the collector edition is 50 bucks more? I dunno, that's the cost of another game man. Damn.
