It looks like electronics retailer Circuit City may soon be able to give you a Better Buy than their competition, as they plan on selling used games in their stores.
Circuit City joins the ranks of other retail outlets that have figured out that they can earn a fair bit of money by buying our old crap. SmartMoney says that the company has given the used games program a green light after testing it in ten stores and online. It seems that they want to do something with the shelf space lost from the music CDs we're not buying.
It's not clear on how pricing will be determined, or how many stores will support this program, but senior VP Irynne MacKay did say that they "want to be competitive on pricing."
I don't know that Circuit City's almost 700 stores can match the reach of GameStop's 4,700 locations, but this could possibly help them gain back some of the market share they've lost to Best Buy. Given good pricing, availability, and trade-in value, Circuit City may become a good alternative to the other pre-played game outlets.
Do you see yourself frequenting a big electronics store to buy your used games?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Didn't Best Buy try this once and fail miserably?
Yeah, I would definitely do that.
It would be nice to see some used SNES or PS1 games in stock, might pick up some rare finds.
If circuit city wasn't completely incompetent as a company this might be good news. Maybe best buy would pick this up.
It better just be for the current generation of console BTW too. Otherwise no one's going to CC to get a N64 game or possibly a PS2 game.
This all sounds really wonky to me! They would also have to have advertising making this announcement too. I woul've never thought of looking there for such games. Without this DTOID blog. Failed business prop. Besides that, I'm sure they're going to test run this in certain store(s) first.
It was great when it started, I got a few games for really great prices, but now they're down to over-priced GameStop/EB titles and sports titles.
I usually look at them when I'm looking for something to pick up used, but the selection is pretty limited. I think luck has a better chance. Especially when my only other used option is three stores (EB and Gamestops with a mile of each other).
It's a nice addition. Just don't expect miracles.
Fail.

It apparently didn't work out too well as they never went national with it. Then again, they aren't circling the drain like Circuit City either...
Unless CC is going to give some generous payback for a great condition used game, then they'll probably attract some attention; but IMO, I think they're just going to end up with a mountain of Madden games, Movie-to-Videogame titles, and Guitar Hero Rock the 80's.
I'm all for used gaming, but if the used costs $5 less than the new... WTF is the point?!
