Circuit City: your new source for used games? photo

It looks like electronics retailer Circuit City may soon be able to give you a Better Buy than their competition, as they plan on selling used games in their stores.

Circuit City joins the ranks of other retail outlets that have figured out that they can earn a fair bit of money by buying our old crap. SmartMoney says that the company has given the used games program a green light after testing it in ten stores and online. It seems that they want to do something with the shelf space lost from the music CDs we're not buying.

It's not clear on how pricing will be determined, or how many stores will support this program, but senior VP Irynne MacKay did say that they "want to be competitive on pricing."

I don't know that Circuit City's almost 700 stores can match the reach of GameStop's 4,700 locations, but this could possibly help them gain back some of the market share they've lost to Best Buy. Given good pricing, availability, and trade-in value, Circuit City may become a good alternative to the other pre-played game outlets.

Do you see yourself frequenting a big electronics store to buy your used games?

To answer your question about frequenting the store for used games, well that depends on if they are being competitive. I'm all about getting my games new but if they have lower prices and the games don't "look" used then I just might consider it.

Didn't Best Buy try this once and fail miserably?

Local game stores FTW! Seriously, no way am I going to CC just to buy a used game. Maybe to harrass the stupid computer salesman that can't tell you the difference between RAM and Memory(It's the same dipshit).

Yeah, I would definitely do that.

I have absolutely no loyalty to any corporate master, so I love it when they beat each other bloody to try and win my favor. May the price wars commence.

It all depends on what sort of deals/prices they have. If it's competitive, I'd go provided they have their games section well organized and what not. At the very least, it's more competition, which could mean better deals for the rest of us. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Maybe if they start offering something worthwhile to sellers instead of ripping them off like Gamestop, some good games will start coming in.

It would be nice to see some used SNES or PS1 games in stock, might pick up some rare finds.

I might. It all depends on if they have Buy 2 Get 1 sales like EB/GS does. That is the only time I buy games. Hooray for huge savings!

They could probably afford to out margin gamestop, give you more money for trade ins and charge you less for used games.

If circuit city wasn't completely incompetent as a company this might be good news. Maybe best buy would pick this up.

If Circuit City was accepting preorders for a new Battletoads, then I'd have bought like 6x, for obvious reasons.

Their stores around here are already to cramped for making a "Used Game" Section.

It better just be for the current generation of console BTW too. Otherwise no one's going to CC to get a N64 game or possibly a PS2 game.

This all sounds really wonky to me! They would also have to have advertising making this announcement too. I woul've never thought of looking there for such games. Without this DTOID blog. Failed business prop. Besides that, I'm sure they're going to test run this in certain store(s) first.

It sucks that companies don't get to see any of the money from used games, but I still buy them anyway. REZ ftw!

I know a lot of people rip into Gamestop but you have to look at their traffic. It's like this you own a pretzel shop and even if it costs you next to nil to make a pretzel in materials you still have to sell a ton to cover your rent, equipment and labor costs because you just can't sell them for much. Gamestop doesn't get an obscene amount of used game sales every day so they need to make it up in margins. They make it up somewhat with the cards for frequent customers that gives you like 10% extra for trade ins and 10% off used games, plus specials that they run. Circuit city can probably do better on margins because they get a ton of traffic (except the one in my town which is the worst circuit city on the planet and requires a treasure map and and a some light puzzles and putting a golden monkey on a pedastool just to FIND). But I'm still going to go to what's cheaper (except I can't get to my circuit city cause I lost the stupid golden monkey).

I already only buy my games at Best Buy, but used game sales have nothing to do with it. I don't support the used games market, I prefer to support the developers more so than the retailers.

MaxVest said it far better than I could have. If they want to give me more money for my games, my loyalty is won... until someone else offers more.

Used games are on the same level as Piracy to me. Pay the extra $3 and support the damn developers people.

If the prices were good and the games were in good condition, then yes, I'd buy from them. Those are big ifs, though.

My Circuit City has been selling used games for two years or so.

It was great when it started, I got a few games for really great prices, but now they're down to over-priced GameStop/EB titles and sports titles.

I usually look at them when I'm looking for something to pick up used, but the selection is pretty limited. I think luck has a better chance. Especially when my only other used option is three stores (EB and Gamestops with a mile of each other).

It's a nice addition. Just don't expect miracles.

Best Buy did this over 2 years ago:

http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/30/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/

It apparently didn't work out too well as they never went national with it. Then again, they aren't circling the drain like Circuit City either...

If CC is planning on taking on Gamestop's used game services, they don't stand a chance. The Gamestop franchise probably has YEARS of used merchandise behind them, most from the Funcolands and EBGames that Gamestop devoured in all of it's gelatinous glory.
Unless CC is going to give some generous payback for a great condition used game, then they'll probably attract some attention; but IMO, I think they're just going to end up with a mountain of Madden games, Movie-to-Videogame titles, and Guitar Hero Rock the 80's.

I'm all for used gaming, but if the used costs $5 less than the new... WTF is the point?!

Used games are already distasteful on a certain level. Circuit City has always been distasteful. Therefore, this entire venture is distasteful to me.
