Could it be? An impending $100 price cut for Sony's PlayStation 3? If Circuit City are to be believed, it looks like it's happening right after next week's E3 events. According to Speedy, a reliable ad/deal hunter over at the Cheap Ass Gamer forums (registration required), Circuit City have advertised a "price break" for the PlayStation 3 60GB SKU, bringing the price down $100 to $499.99. This has yet to be announced or confirmed by Sony, but as you can see from the above image (taken from the DVDTalk forums ), it's plain as day. The ad is valid starting on June 15, right after E3, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sony announces this next Wednesday at their press conference. But is $499.99 enough to jump start slacking PS3 sales? [Thanks to alienaub for the tip!]

sweet! instead of paying for a $599 doorstop, i can pay $499 for a doorstop!
Make that $399 Sony, and I'm yours. Still not ready to part with $100 more for a machine that has pretty much the same games as my beloved Xbox 360.
Give us a hundred quid off in the UK and we may just talk turkey. MAY.
Gotta gets the hi-defs first and foremost. Above AAAALLLLLLLL.
Yeah but you can watch Talladega Nights on this doorstop!
too late, i already too many consoles.....
Wow, another $50-100 price drop and some actual good games and the PS3 will almost be buyable.
i still want 360 more. but ill make sad panda sony happy when i get a PSP, maybe.
Might just be a Circuit City-only limited time promotion.
Is the PSP for your doggy door? I don't think it weighs enough to stop an actual door.
Are you sure it's just not Circuit City's way of trying to get the fucking things of their shelves?
Anyway, still not worth it to me. Maybe when it drops another couple hundred and has more games, I'll consider it. But right now, no way in hell. The only way I'd get one right now is if I won one in a contest or something, and that's the only way.
More exclusive games and I can guarantee most people will start to buy the console at the $499 price...
@Trevor: Are you serious? You want Sony to sell the PS3 for $299? Cheaper than the most minimal adequately equipped Xbox 360? That's a bit... Extreme.. No?.. I would have said another $50 to $100 at most, but that $100 is even pushing it from an industry and competition standpoint.
Desperate times call for drastic measures.
@ Haley:
The PS3 is definitely heavy enough to stop a door. Thing is a beast.
that hundred will make a noticeable spike in sales. but the game is really all about software and sony is definitely sticking to their "marathon" mentality -- but then again there's nothing they can do about the games other than to roll them out when they're ready. i honestly don't get the people who keep bitching about the lack of games. would you rather have rushed games put on the market for the sake of sales or games that have had time to get most of the kinks worked out? it's not like the gripers have anything better to do, i guess.
@Gameboi - Totally agree!
But I would also have to wait for God of War 3 and Haze to be a PS3 exclusive before I'm buying. Although Heavenly Sword and Lair look pretty sweet!
Until then I'll stick with my Halo...I mean Xbox 360...
@ Dennen
I'm sorry, but that's the way it is. I use to be a fan of Sony, but I really just got tired of their shit. From overpricing a gaming console to telling us we need to get a second job to afford it and the two-faced style to their problems (ex. "Hey, we don't got a problem. Now, Nintendo, they've got a problem, those...uh, breaking wrist straps and kiddy system isn't going to get them anyway" or some shit like that). They really just alienated their fan base with their insane comments and claims and remarks about the competition to try and sound big and bad.
I mean, I no fanboy of any console, but Sony proved themselves to just be a bunch of dickheads when it comes to their PR and attempt at distracting us from their faults. At least Microsoft is manning up for their mistakes now, though I was getting very close to just calling them assholes. Nintendo isn't completely sin free either with them selling the Nunchuck and Wiimote separate and charging an overall price of $60 for each set you buy. They're all guilty of something, but Sony is the worst offender in my eyes. So, yeah, I wouldn't buy a PS3 without a couple hundred price drop.
Great points made, Trevor *nod*
Their PR is most definitely a very damaged section of their gameplan. I hope that they plan on changing that up very soon.
I, too, am no fanboy of any particular console. I can see the PS3 dropping down to around $400 in a couple years. For now, I am definitely looking forward to what they have to say at E3. Maybe we'll get good news. Maybe we'll get more of the same BS.
I think the drop will be enough to get some fence sitters to take the plunge, but I don't think it will be anything more than a 2-3 month spike till it comes down to the same price as the 360.
If this is real, and probably a good chance it is, Sony must be pissed that their good news got leaked early, plus it gives Microsoft time to strike back.
It doesn't matter if sony is dropping the price, circuit city clearly is, so if thats what you wanted, go get it there. Otherwise, it is false advertising.
@ArrestedDeveloper: If MS drops the price of their machine (doubting they will), then that's a sold for me, I think. I wants some GTA4 et al, but I'm still gun shy about the price. but a drop AND this alleged uber support for free. Sounds like a winner. maybe.
Why would this make anyone buy a PS3? Tax alone will be around $100, so back to square one.
PEACE
well, seeing as how the Original $499 priced system didn't sell that well, I don't think anything more will come of it other than a short spike in system sales.
Good games (besides sigma, resistance) and another $100.00 off - then i'll at least think about making a purchase
i seriously doubt MS will drop the price of the 360 ... at least not for a good long time after their little hardware hiccup that's gonna cost them north of a billion dollars. but then again, sony is taking quite the hit for every machine sold, too. guess they're both back to basics.
Apparently bruceleethree lives somewhere where there's a 20% tax rate, SuMizzle *nod* *nod*.... What wackiness this world has come to.
No Katamari + No Rumble + No Guitar Hero + No Bioshock + No Halo 3= No Haloes for Sony.
Try $299 Sony, and then at that price, you better have the HD DVD guys run out of town.
Meh, still not interested. I don't even like having to pay $399 for a console, new technology be damned.
ps3 + resistance is still 600 dollars
lol
best part about this news is that it increases the possibility of the 360 dropping in price.
hopefully by the holiday season the premium will be 299
hmm, ya know what I'm going to buy resistance right now. so that when the day comes that I run out and buy a PS3 it actually will cost exactly as advertised, now thats not a bad idea
"But is $499.99 enough to jump start slacking PS3 sales?"
Probably not, but it would help attract more developers. Nobody wants to write software for a $600 machine unless they get some kind of kickback from Sony, and Sony openly says they don't do that (or some other similar BS).
I'm still going to wait. To me, price isn't the issue.
So what does this translate to over here in the UK? Anything of any value?
This is good news I suppose... for somebody.
I guess I could melt it down and and use the parts to build several Wiis.
