CING files for bankruptcy, adventure gaming fans weep photo

If you own a DS and you like adventure games then you've played Hotel Dusk and you know what a fantastic game it is all around. If you own a DS and you don't play adventure games then you should go buy Hotel Dusk and find out what a fantastic game it is all around. Picking up Trace Memory might also be a good idea while you're at it. Maybe you could even turn your Wii on and play the epically good Little King's Story.

I suggest doing these things so fervently because we might not be getting anymore games like these any time soon. CING, the developer behind all these games, has filed for bankruptcy. The company is reportedly suffering from liabilities totaling 256 million yen (about 2.5 million USD). Evidently critical adoration and a cult following don't translate into enough money to run a game development company.

Now, bankruptcy doesn't mean they will be disappearing forever yet, but it could spell problems for the localization of the Hotel Dusk sequel, The Last Window. As one of the most unique and creative developers out there, especially on the Wii, this is really sad news. Hopefully they'll come out of this stronger and with even better games for us all to play.

Nooo! I need the next Hotel Dusk.

Also, they have to declare bankruptcy over 2.5 million? I feel I could be 2.5 million in debt and make the payments.

I feel like a jackass for not buying any of their games, even though I borrowed and loved Trace Memory. I guess its time to make a trip to Gamestop and stock up.

If ever there was a time for Nintendo to buy a developer, now would be that time.

Did my part, I think I bought like a third copy of Hotel Dusk a few weeks ago.

I don't know why this is the game I keep losing.

Nintendo definitely needs to just buy them up.

Cing is an awesome developer.

I can't say I didn't see this coming, unfortunately. Amazing developer, great games...just not very sellable to a mass market. It's a shame too. Companies these days can make amazing games that are loved and adored by both critics and consumers, but they simply won't make enough money to keep the company afloat. Quite unfortunate...here's hoping if things don't turn out for the better before the company completely goes down that the people working their at least find new jobs.

That will be sad if the Last Window doesn't release in the US. All that work and then nothing.

I Just ordered both these games from Amazon, because they have interested me heavily since I saw them but I have never taken initiative to go out and get them.

I actually bought Little King's Story and Trace Memory recently, so don't blame me!

I do feel bad for not finishing LKS, but that game feels pretty damn long.

CiNG became one of my favorite developers after I got trace Memory and Hotel Dusk Room 215, they got great storytelling and pretty unique characters.

I am still pretty annoyed that Another Code: R never got localized in the states even if it ha been told we are not missing way that much. And the Last Window better get announced here too.

Though I could be a bit responsible for not buying Again or Little king's Story yet. I just wish the best of luck to them and stay strong.

@Usedtabe

Heh, it was not necessary, but thanks.

Another Code was terrible. I really don't understand why so many people claim to have enjoyed that tech demo with a (stupid) story.

That said, Hotel Dusk and Little King's Story were sublime, and I'm sure Last Window would've been just as great. Let's hope it'll hit the west regardless of this setback.

@Dv8thwonder, so true. Also it's not like they'd can't afford it. ( '_ ')

That's sad to hear; I really enjoyed Little King's Story, it was such a bizarre, charming game.

Am I the only one here who has played Glass Rose (their first game published by Capcom)? I think that game summed them up in a nutshell. CiNG are great storytellers, but a lot of their games were hit-and-miss with the gameplay. I think Hotel Dusk had the right balance, but something like Another Code:R was just one-sided and suffered for it. Still, it's a shame they're going under.

This is really unfortunate. In my mind, there's no question Hotel Dusk is a bona fide masterpiece for the DS and games in general. The art style is really like no other and it's so well executed. That game had so much atmosphere you could cut it with a knife. The music was killer too.

Trace Memory, while not as successful as Hotel Dusk, is still a really great title despite some faults and worth checking out.

A real shame. I hope their staff find good places to work elsewhere. You will be missed.

This is just another develop in dire straights, because they didn't move out of the Nintendo zone of influence. Cing should have been all over getting Hotal Dusk and Another Code onto iPhone. Even at a low price, that income would have been invaluable to them.

On top of that, its a shame that Nintendo cockblocked Last Window, but there was also no home console product to back them up and the advennture genre was very niche. For a developer that makes few games, it was bound to hurt them more.

Doubt Nintendo gives a fuck anyway, so long as they are getting their green. I hope that Ignition pick this up for release on DS, since they are about getting good games to us.

Do the right thing, Mr Bettenhausen.

Damn. I was looking forward to the Hotel Dusk sequel. If they really do go under, then I can only hope for a fan translation......

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say: "FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...."

Soooo...Everyone's gonna buy Cing's 'Again', right?

Also, as others have said, Cing + Nintendo is downright necessary. And I think it's the only shot Last Window will have for localization....Please, Nintendo. Please?

Argh, I was really hoping they'd make another game using the engine they did for Trace Memory on Wii. The game sort of sucked (in the end anyways), but the way they did the graphics was pretty fucking amazing.
