Church: Games are a bubbling sewer of sexual pornography photo

The Church of England synod, usually content to keep out of peoples' business and discuss gardening tips over a cup of milky tea, has decided to whine about videogames again, still carrying a vendetta it's carried since 2007, when Resistance: Fall of Man featured Manchester Cathedral in a level.

The Guardian calls the Anglican Church a "victim" of videogames for the Cathedral's portrayal, which is rather pathetic in its own right. Meanwhile, the Very Rev Govender Rogers Govender demonstrated a very Christian lack of forgiveness by continuing to bitch about something that happened three years ago:

"Sony's response was: "What is the church worried about? It's just a game.' I had to tell them, 'It may just be a fantasy game to you, but violence is really serious on the streets of Manchester.' We eventually managed to elicit a grudging apology."

Lay member and former MP Tom Benyon called videogames a "bubbling sewer of gratuitously violent and sexual pornography." He also claimed that one child had seen something in a videogame so scary that he had nightmares and "the images remained with him for months." I'd say that kid's a pussy.

 "Why is it acceptable, indeed lawful, to portray the killing and burning of a woman in Fatality," moans Benyon, "the sawing up of a woman in Mortal Combat (sic), playing football with severed heads; the chainsaw killing of a man in Saw III, rape, torture and so on? I have all these terrible games collected and if anyone has the courage to watch it, please do so."

I love how he mentions Saw III, as if that wasn't a movie first. But in any case, Benyon is the one collecting games and offering to show them off like they were porno tapes. The rest of us aren't so childish as to see something we don't like and then demand that it should be illegal, just because it offends our fragile sensibilities. These guys should go back to doing what they're good at -- being irrelevant.

That this is necessary either demeans our subculture(s) or further defines us.

Well, to be fair, the Christians know a bit about extreme violence and sexual pornography. Just read the Bible.

I sincerely hope that as technology and knowledge evolves people can see how bad and weird religion is.

Those are the kind of things you look back on later in life and smile; your first really scary movie as a kid, or that one time you saw your brother play Phantasmagoria.

But no, the kid is probably SCARRED FOR LIFE!

I'm a pretty avid gamer, and correct me if im wrong, but I've never seen a mainstream game (as in not some shite from the back room of a japanese smut shop) where you rape a women. Not even in story and definitely not interactively.

@ Pyrex Metal - It's not quite the same thing, but there was a rape scene in Phantasmagoria. ;P

Anyway, I wonder when these church crumblies are getting around to filtering out all the smut, misogyny, and gratuitous violence from the bible.

Not that I agree with anything these people said, but I don't think it's particularly fair to attribute the "bubbling sewer of sexual pornography" quote to the entire church when it's just one guy who isn't even a minister who said it, and most of the other mental things quoted in this post. The only quote from an actual minister in this sounds significantly more sane to me, even though I do disagree with him, it sounds much more like a thought-out opinion with good intentions behind it than Daily Mail produced hyperbole. Just sayin'.

What I meant to say, instead of nothing, was lolreligion.

I'm not going to pull the usual "Yeah, well look what you did in the real world X years ago!", but if there's an organisation that believes in an invisible force/being everywhere around us that sees, knows and is everything, and that organisation is using rules that it believes that force/being set for them to dictate how everyone lives and cries when it doesn't get to...Well, gaming isn't ruining that much, at the very least.

kids being scared by something they have never seen before? REALLY?
it makes you wonder how these people ever grew up to become adults. have they ever been scared of anything when they were growing up?
then you get used to it and it doesnt bother you as much anymore right?
what the hell is wrong with people?
its called learning. everyone goes through this. they will get over it and get.

Good sir you to have a religion, as religion is simply what you believe and the things you do regularly. Like "Jim religiously puts the emergency brake on every time he parks."

"Believe in those that seek the truth, question those who say they found it"
I piss of churches and scientists alike because I ask those question that they have no answers for yet they still act like they do. They both BS and both are trying to protect what they believe in by lying and putting there fingers in there ears when truth comes there way.

Both are religions.

Show them Dante's Inferno and see what they say.

No wait, show them excerpts of Dante's Inferno....and wait till they get all in a lather about how disgusting it is etc...

Then tell them its Dante's Inferno, which is based on the/a version of Christian Hell...then see what they have to say for themselves.

Fun fact for people. I just happened to look up UK crime statistics (being the church of Manchester and all), and it appears that, based on both Police Reported Crime AND British Crime Survey statistics, crime has dropped on average 45% over the past 15 years.

So he's not just a reactionary pillock, he's also a liar.

uglyduck, crime in general in the uk has fallen (the easy to deal with fairly petty crimes) , but VIOLENT crime has risen horrifically. That's also a fact. rapes, murders, knife and gun incidents have been on the rise dramatically for years.

For those disinclined to click links, I linked to the main points for the latest crime stats recorded in England and Wales by the government.

Main points:

* All police recorded crime down 5% to 4.7 million crimes
* Violence against the person down 6%
* with injury down 7%
* Domestic burglary up 1%
* Offences against vehicles down 10%
* Theft from the person down 12%
* Criminal damage down 10%
* Robbery down 5%
* Drugs offences up 6%

In before anyone else promotes their supposed "facts" about violent crime in England.

Or this was a church kid, saw a tit and was terrified at the sight. Shit like this is why i'm a believer but totally give the finger to any institution that claims to represent God on earth.
