Seriously, the PS1 version is 20x better. :l
"Is this game that great? - Yes. However, it's not the best classic JRPG. That award goes to Final Fantasy 6.
Nice to know i'm not the only one who places Chrono Trigger NOT at the no.1 spot in JRPG history. And NOT even at the no.1 spot in SNES RPG history either.
FF6 is still the game to beat in terms of balance, challenge, musical score, character depth, and storyline. It was essentially the perfect RPG. Chrono Trigger did things nearly as well, especially in terms of music and characters, but I gotta hand it to Square's title that came a year prior. Btw if anyone hasn't played Chrono Cross, go do it now. You won't regret it.
I'd they halved it, $5 a shot, I'd have bought them all, at 10 I've bought none.
That said, CT has -great- characters, -great- writing, some of the best artwork on the SNES, fun battles, and oodles and oodles of personality.
I'd easily put it my top 5 RPG's on the SNES. I'd likely put it in my top 3.
FF6 though.. man, that's a great game. I still can't believe the balls they had. **SPOILERS** I mean.. the world ended! That shit was serious, yo! **/SPOILERS**
I think the art is slightly better in CT, and the game is a little bit funnier. Also, CT has a battle system that, though very similar, might "feel" a bit more active for some people. However, besides that, I think FF6 is a better game in every way.
2) Buttons aren't an issue. It's a [semi] turn based RPG (there's an option for full turn based) - the game is still completely playable.
@Kingshark
I think FF6 is *better*, but I found the locales/character/enemy design much more engaging in Chrono Trigger.
One minute you'll be fighting incredibly colorful ancient humanoid Frog monsters, and the next minute you'll be in the future fighting robots - yet the art style held everything together. When FF6 wasn't making use of it's amazing cutscenes and fun boss battles, I felt like world map roaming was pretty bland and uninspiring (and that accounts for a lot of the game).
CT had a more broad scope, and I think in some ways it can be argued that it's the best SNES RPG of all time - although I'd put Secret of Mana in that discussion.
I realize it was pretty forward-thinking for its time and it created a lot of good memories, but I don't think it holds up at all today unless you've got that nostalgia fix to keep you hooked into it.
I never played it as a kid, but when it started getting re-releases and being touted as "BEST RPG EVAR!" I DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY. Even though I normally love RPGS (even traditional ones), I found this game to be pretty damn boring.
Within the first hour I wanted to quit, but I soldiered on to give it some time to improve, but around the 5-10 hour mark I couldn't take it anymore and had to stop.
Over all, it just had nothing to hold my interest.
I agree with you about the artwork, but I think FF6, hands down, has a better story and takes more chances. I also think it's a more challenging game. That's not unambiguously good, but, given how easy CT is, I do think it represents an improvement in this instance.
Everyone/anyone can have that one game that stands for what they feel this medium has to offer. Chrono Trigger is that game for me.
It was a perfect storm; I was young and impressionable, searching for that right experience. Chrono Trigger was the right game at the right time.
My friends and I always raved on about THE game for us. One of them is Morrowind, the other is Metal Gear Solid, and mine is Chrono Trigger.
Sorry, just needed to get that out.
Passionate old school gamers having an in-depth discussion regarding games on a gaming site is bad - got it.
I swear gamers have become too reliant on every game discussion being about rating everything.
*takes a deep breath*
FINAL FANTASY XIII > CHRONO TRIGGER
I'll be back later to check on you kids. Don't disappoint me.
I completely disagree about the nostalgia being the only reason. I didn't play it until the DS version and became totally head over heels in love with it.
