Christophe Gans not attached to Silent Hill 2 film photo

The topic of a Silent Hill 2 film is a very sensitive subject among fans of the title, considering the game's story is the most beloved of the series. There was talk of a film adaption way back in 2006, and that perhaps Sandman writer Neil Gaiman would be at the helm for the script, but that news unfortunately dissipated like smoke. Here we are in 2009, with no movie and no news about a movie.

Until now, at least. Bloody Disgusting was recently on the set of Breck Eisner's The Crazies and had a chance to speak with Radha Mitchell, who starred as Rose in the first Silent Hill film, about what was going on with the Silent Hill 2 project. She admitted she didn't know the details about the project but that she did think they were "kicking it around".

Also speaking about who will direct, Mitchell said she does not believe Christophe Gans will be involved:

[That] is a shame because he’s a nutter but he’s so passionate about the game. I think he should do it if they do it again."

Mitchell also says she hopes she can cameo in the sequel as some sort of monster. That sounds like fun, but what doesn't sound fun is seeing this film without Gans behind the helm. Of course, someone else very talented could come along, and let's hope for that. I wonder what the casting call for Pyramid Head would look like? "Must be muscular, tortured, able to carry fifty pounds on head for long periods of time...."

I kinda want a direct adaptation of the 2nd game. I think the story is just so good to pass up. I think the first silent hill movie was probably to best video game movie made so far so I can defiantly see something good out of them working with the games script. Hopefully.

I didn't really view the Silent Hill film as the advent of quality video game movies, so I'm kind of indifferent.

Actually, I'm more excited to see an SH2 movie with a different director since the original movie didn't really mesh with me.

We already know how it´s gonna end: they gonna messed up with the canon of Sh2 like they did with SH1... does anyone think they´ll respect James story? Gans is a good director and the images on the first movie were very SH but Roger Avary was the one who f*cked up everything:the stupid "burn the witch" thingy still makes me wanna barf. SH1 and the cult was enough to have a decent plot (very Lovecraft and Stephen king), but NO... Mr Avary tried to "contribute" with his "vision"...

I totally agree with Pyramid Head. If you can't do it right don't do it at all! SH2 is my favorite of the series and one of my alltime favorite games period.

The story is wonderful and the movie better be so goddamn good that it sweeps ever kind of film award and brings everyone in the audience to tears because of how good it is.

To pull this off you need to build a team of people who live and breathe and loves Silent Hill 2's story with an undying passion. I offer my services in a production role.

Don't F THS UP!!!!

I enjoyed the first film. I don't believe it was the abortion many people made it out to be. No, it didn't stick to the game's plot to the T, but it was entertaining and just seeing some of the crazy creatures from the game on the big screen was entertainment enough for me. I hope the second film comes out and is entertaining while sticking as close as possible to the SH2 plot, no matter who directs it.

The first film is my favorite video game movie. Period. That is due almost entirely becaues of Gans and his work. The film kid in me squeels with delight at the mention of his name. Anyone who has ever seen The Brotherhood of the Wolf can attest to the genius of his special breed of horror, infused with on-purpose cheesiness and scathing social commentary. Silent Hill was all the better for it and, with the exception of the ending, was one of the few game movies that satisfied the holy-grail-goal of game movies (ie. being appealing to those who don't know a thing about the game, but also possessing enough fanservice to please the dedicated). Of course, this is terrible news; however, last I heard, Gans was working on an Onimusha movie. At least we can still have his smart directorial style attached to another worthwhile game franchise if that works out.

I liked the movie BotW. I thought it was pretty good.

One thing I didn't like about the first movie though was that girl. What, it was 5 minutes into the movie, I cringed when she opened her mouth the first time.

I thought the person was pretty good, not super fantastic but pretty damn good.

You can never make a good video game movie, most material doesn't adapt itself to it so the director/script writers need to change to fit, this angers the purists and the average movie goer won't see a video game movie so you're doubly screwed.

I don't understand the hate for the Silent Hill movie...it was fucking awesome. It stood out great as a stand alone movie and fantastic as far as videogame to movie conversions go.

I wish people would get their heads out of their asses.

It wasn't a bad movie but it wasn't good. Christophe Gans didn't take any particular care that couldn't be found elsewhere (and with better results). Give me someone with the balls to revel in the ambiguity of silent hill and not judt rest on "cool" visuals.

Gans was "passionate" about the game?

Did we play the same game? Or see the same movie?

Personally, I think the visual style and soundtrack (which consisted of pretty much nothing but songs from the games) was all the first movie had going for it. And since they nailed the A/V portion, a lot of fanboys raised on shit video game adaptations that have absolutely no respect for their source material gave it a free pass. But they forgot (or ignored) the fact he just completely discarded almost every plot point from the games. We didn't need a direct adaptation of the games, but for how much people seem to think Gans "respected" the games, he sure did change most of what made them great. Just because it's better than everything else in its category doesn't make it good.

I think handing the reigns over to someone else would be a fine idea, although please don't just stop at Gans (Roger "I have my own vision" Avery, I'm looking at you). Get some new blood in there, make a great movie, and forget the first movie ever happened.

And for the love of all that is holy, get some people who can actually act!
