Christian police groups want to ban The Darkness II photo

Various Christian law enforcement groups have colluded to express their distaste for upcoming 2K Games sequel, The Darkness II. They'd like to see it go very far away, in fact, for fear that it will make people hate the police. Go figure.

A large coalition, formed from the International Christian Police Fellowship, the Christian Police Association, the Swiss Christian Police Association and the Germany Christian Police Association have sent a letter to developers and politicians, complaining about game violence overall and singling out the first-person demon-tendril-simulator.

They believe games like The Darkness II promote hatred of law enforcers and "idealized violence" and that politicians should refuse to support the industry in order to stop real-world crimes. Because, as always, it's obvious that videogames are the reason why anything bad has happened, ever. Nobody's ever done something bad because of what they gleaned from the Bible, right?

I'm frankly more concerned that there are groups of police officers who identify themselves through the fact that they believe in things without needing any evidence. Not sure I'd want them handling any case I was involved in.

Good thing they named themselves the International Christian Police Fellowship, otherwise I wouldn't take them seriously.

how many more years until people completely stop placing blame of violence on video games, and move to the next thing?

so its okay for books, and film, and television to portray the police as the enemy but when videogames do it its wrong?

also any police officer who belives games cause crime should be fired.

Duh .... violence isn't caused by videogames. It's caused by 3D movies, that extra 'D' confounds the brain and angrys up the blood.

It would be hilarious if they succeeded in getting The Drakness 2 banned only for a WitchBlade game to come out in its place.

It's one thing to post an article about law enforcement getting upset about an upcoming game. But to finish it off with an ignorant, blatantly offensive comment is not necessarily and not acceptable. And you were the one to go on a rant about gaming journalists posting articles that do not have to do with games...you're doing the same thing by hiding your arrogance distaste for religious groups in your articles.
This is not the first time...

Also, they could ban this. I'd just read the COMIC BOOK SERIES IT WAS BASED OFF OF.

Find marginal sidegroup that happens to view itself as Christian. Make snide remarks about the religion as a whole.

Thanks for another original article.

Yes, the Darkness games paint cops as evil... not all the hundreds of movies, books, tv shows, music, and other video games that have crooked cops...

Or you know... real fucking life where cops are being busted for being crooked.

"What a man soweth, that shall he also reap!" read the letter, quoting Galatians 6:7 from the Bible and adding an exclamation point for emphasis.

"There are no police officers in the game," replied 2K.

lmao. Well I suppose it's case closed?

I would assume the judicial system would take care of that, Jim.

Other than that, I don't get the "Christian" angle you're taking with this.

This sounds more like cops not wanted to be portrayed as "pigs". Yeah, good luck with that.

And the punch line in the original article is just awesome.

Jim, that last paragraph made me want to give you a hug! Always makes me laugh these religious groups, how many people have been killed as a result of video games; very few, how many people have been killed because of religion, 1000's. Hypocrites that's all they are.

Being that these groups seem to originate from Germany and Switzerland where there is already a big anti-violence in media enviroment, this isn't surprising.

That being said, I never understand why people get so defensive and try to take the opposite extreme in these cases and pretend that violent games have absolutely no effect at all whatsoever on anyone. After all, we do have ESRB, PEGI etc to distinguish appropriateness of content. Logic dictates that your social environment has an affect on your behavior. Playing GTA once isn't going to make you a killer, but playing a whole whole lot might just push you a little closer. I don't think any of these people would tell you that violent movies are a great thing either. They just picked one thing to focus on.

Also, that last paragraph was a bullshit comment and was purely offensive and inflammatory.

"Christian law enforcement group" is a misleading label, man. These groups can call themselves "police" this or that all they want, they are not law enforcement groups. They are just endearing little sods who want to give their lives purpose and embark on little crusades like this one. My hat goes off to them; they are very cute peoples and I hope they succeed, just to see what happens.

Seeing that religion has been around since the dawn of civilization, while videogames have existed for, what, 35 years (?), there's only one appropriate response to that pie chart:

Well, DUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! While not compare videogames to alcohol, while at it?

Besides, it's missing the cross-section.

"To all the people getting riled up at Jim's last comment. Are you insinuating that Christian's DON'T believe in things without evidence?"

That's not at ALL what they are insinuating; faith is faith. Everyone believes things without evidence, some are just more picky on where to place the threshold.

The problem people have is that Jim is insinuating a policeman who is Christian is more inclined to "misjudge". That's insulting to both Christians AND Policemen, the targets of the joke.

I get it, but whiteknighting Jim is pointless here; he woudn't have made the joke if he didn't expect the reaction it got.

I wish people would stop creating groups and hiding behind their religions as defence. As a "Christian" myself, I feel ashamed that there are people like these who call for actions such as this. Religion is a gift, but then you have idiots like these who manipulate it. And then the athiests/other religions come in, blast Christianity for stupid things like this when all the blame should go to the group. It's merely a scapegoat.

Jim, why do you always feel the need to bash Christianity or religion period? I go to a video game website to get video game news. Not to be insulted. You make it such a big part of your stories to try and offend someone and I understand that's your thing. But come on now. It's getting old and repetitive and it makes you sound ignorant. The story is about a small sect of crazy Christians who don't speak for Christianity as a whole. I don't hate or bash on anyone based on religion, race, gay or straight, or anything. It's not right and it makes you no better than anyone else.
