Christian conservatives attack 'gay agenda' in PC game photo

Conservative Christian site World Net Daily is running a report on Hasbro's The Game of Life, with claims that it is "pushing the homosexual agenda" by allowing same-sex marriage in the game.

"You know how kids are," says one concerned mother, as she tried to overcome the trauma of thinking about gay people existing. "My daughter noticed right away (even before I did) and clicked on one of the girls instead of one of the men and then asked, 'Mom, how come I can marry a woman?' And then that led into a lot more questions that, quite frankly, I was not ready to talk to my 6-year-old about.

"I went back to the web site and left a very respectful review of the game just stating that this kind of thing should be left out of kids' games, and the Shockwave.com administrator removed my post, stating it was inappropriate. I had no idea how insidious they were being with pushing the homosexual agenda."

You know, I've always wondered what this so-called "agenda" was. I've heard bigots push that buzz-word around but it's never been explained. Are they going to force us all to turn gay by touching us with their hands and infecting us with their GAY POWERS? I've heard they can do that! Or maybe there is no agenda, and it's just a bunch of pathetic gay-hating worms who are using sinister words without explaining them to terrify the gullible masses. Nah, that's way too crazy a thought.

Perhaps promoting gay marriage in a game aimed at kids is not the best idea, since they're too young to think about sexuality. Of course, had this game actually promoted gay marriage, there'd be a debate. The Game of Life does NOT promote such a thing, it merely allows it, should a person choose to do so. Not restricting a thing is not the same as "pushing" it.

People who go out looking for gay things might want to take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves why they're looking so hard. Oh, Jack Thompson told GamePolitics about the story, by the way. He's very interested in gay issues, I hear.

I just want to say, as a Christian (Roman Catholic specifically), I have no problem with gays. I even have multiple gay friends, at a Catholic school no less. These radicals use the Bible as a weapon to support their own twisted agendas rather than follow it's message of loving thy neighbor. People like this make me sick.

Or hey, maybe she could explain to her daughter that some women like women, and some men like men. It's just the way things are. That way, when her daughter grows up and finds out that she has an affinity for the same sex, or even if she has those feelings now, she won't feel like a social outcast or feel like she's failing her parents...or at worst, end up killing herself because she thinks she's wrong.

Fuck these people.

We gays actually are a secret cabal of Illuminati with an agenda to spread polygamous ideals and AIDS to the general populace.

Seriously, though. I never got the whole "My child isn't ready to learn about gay people" shtick. If your kid can understand the whole 'mommy-daddy' dynamic, then what's the difference between that and 'mommy-mommy'?

funny how these kind of people are way too quick to react on things like that.

the AI in this game are all heterosexual.

So if the player does not choose a same sex partner, there won't be any gay marriage shown in the game.

Woah, wait. The Game of Life allows you to marry gay folks? I don't remember that. Anyway I've had it with people asserting their gayness online in PC games. Whether they're trying to hit on you during matches, teabagging your corpse, or humping your back, or having really homoerotic spray tags. Or maybe it's because I've unwittingly joined a gay clan server.

When my son is six years old, and asks me about why two men might be holding hands or why his sim can marry another male sim, wouldn't the honest and respectful answer be to admit some humans are attracted to members of the same sex?

Why can't Christians respect their children enough to give them honest answers?

I betcha their agenda is the end of the human race!

Think about it! If they turned everyone gay, we'd stop reproducing, and then the human race would cease to exist! :O

But seriously, people should really stop getting upset over things that have absolutely no bearing on their own lives. I think it's dumb how people feel like they need to shield their children from these kind of things. They're going to find out about it sooner or later, so you might as well talk to them about it now while they still don't harness any stupid prejudices - but maybe that's the point.

What I dont understand is... Just because a game or movie or book or whatever has one gay character or allows the player to be gay they say its promoting this gay agenda. How is it promoting anything gay anymore than it is promoting anything straight? Usually there are just as many if not more straight characters than gay ones. Players have always, at least in games I have played, had as much chance and reason to be straight as gay. So how does it PROMOTE the gay agenda? This is all assuming the gay "agenda" is anything more than to simply exist.

@RonBurgandy2010:

As someone who grew up Roman Catholic (now agnostic, which is not the same as atheist for anyone who thinks otherwise), I agree.

The teachings of Christ were those of tolerance and love for all people regardless of their supposed impurity (see Mary Magdalene, who was a prostitute) or their ideology (the parable of the Good Samaritan). Anyone who uses the Bible as an excuse against gays or any other "lifestyle" (that really has nothing to do with religion) is abusing the Bible and is effectively doing the opposite of Christ's teachings.

As an agnostic, I feel kind of weird having said all of that. Oh, well.

@JohnB

It's been disputed that Mary was a prostitute; it's most likely that this was a later fabrication of the church (the same way that people always think Jesus was crucified through his hands, which would have led to him falling off the cross).

But yeah, the Bible tends to tout 'love for all mankind' a bit more than 'burn 'em all and let God sort them out!' It seems to me that these people bitch and moan because they think they shouldn't have to explain some of the more complex matters of life to their kids to help guide them through life. Which is pretty much the job description of being a parent.

I guess that mother wont allow her daughter to go to a school where there are sons of gay parents, or meet with those children, or even talk to them, or else she would HAVE TO EXPLAIN why does that child have two moms or two dads, or she would have to explain why there are such awful things in the world!

I hear many people defend Catholicism and some Protestant churches by claiming they or their friends are/know people who are homosexual, and that they tolerate it.

You are aware the Pope and most Catholic officials declare homosexuality as wrong? And that many Protestant churches declare the same? I just don't see how people reconcile professing to be in a church yet declaring that they are in direct opposition to the representative of God or whatever. I'm not trying to be accusatory, just wanted to point out the contradiction.

Being gay is wrong according to the bible. Anyone who says they are Christina/Catholic and has homo friends isn't following their religion very well. So get off the fence, and decide: are you with your God or are you with your super fabulous buddies.

Also, keep this gay shit out of children's games. A game is supposed to be game, not a lesson about all the things that go on in the world. Children will find out about that stuff when they are older. They have NO NEED to learn about it at that age. At the same time, if they do find out about it earlier, teach them that shit is wrong wrong wrong!

@mgmgarcia01: If you would, please, enlighten me as to why it is "wrong wrong wrong!" because I'm not about to teach a child something that I don't understand myself. And honestly, I would rather have them educate themselves on such a sensitive subject with me (or their parents rather) as opposed to picking it up from the little bastards at their school or some random stranger they encounter.

I think that if a game incorporates a mature subject such as marriage there is no need to taint it with double standards, because we all know how that works.

hey mgmgarcia01, you do know that the church shuffles around pedophile (usually with boys ergo HOMO) priests, when they are found out right? and as for keeping shit out of games, you sound like any game-illeterate parent out there, going under the assumption that the game being demonized will just appear in your childs hands without you having any responsability in the matter. STFU if you dont want shit in your kid's hands then pay attention to what you are buying them.

Also this is a video game review website, if you have a request to keep stuff out of games, go post at some publisher's website, nobody gives a shit about your opinion of what should and should'nt be in a video game. FOD

@stanfy86: There is no need to get hostile, that is what causes all the flamewars. And I don't think anyone should not voice their opinion for whatever reason, but I do think that they should back it up when called upon. Also, we cannot lay the blame of all the Church's ills on one man or expect him to defend them. Because if that were the case I would hate to have to defend all the bullshit that the US has put people through.

I seem to remember as a kid playing the board game choosing another guy when I got married and it went completly over our heads. Something tells me if this woman didnt have a gay-fearing freakout reaction, and had to her daughter just dismissed it/gave it a write off explanation the whole thing would have blown over her child's head and she wouldnt have had to discussions about things that "led into a lot more questions that, quite frankly, I was not ready to talk to my 6-year-old about" in her own words.

Her child isn't going to be corrupted by marrying another girl in a board game, and even with all the explanation in the world most of it is gonna go over the kid's head anyway. If the kid was older, maybe 12 and able to grasp the situation, then she should have the talk, and if she cant then there's no way that child will grow up healthy...

Interesting, they never mentioned this woman was Christian at all.

Or maybe it's because the WorldNet set is Christian, he assumed this was a Christian woman? I did a search on the About page and also couldn't find any reference to Christianity. Hmmmm.

Is Jim jumping to conclusions and bashing Christianity, yet again? Maybe by some form of logic he assumes that everyone who doesn't agree with homosexuality is a Christian? Or maybe he forgot that most of the world's religions have similar views?

Syn: I wont get into it tooo deeply with you but my main kind of black and white reasons are:
Its unnatural.
Humans need to re-produce. We cant accomplish that if we are in same sex relationships.
And as i said previously, its a sin in the bible. There's lots of religions in the world, and I'm not familiar with them all, but i don't think many say that homosexuals go to heaven. I could wrong on that. But in at least christian faith, its a sin.

hey stanfy86: yes i do know that the church has had some of those things happen. And yes, of course, that's fucked up, as we can all agree.

I watch very closely what my son plays, and i make sure I've already played those games. Violence in games is no problem for me for my son. Violence is ingrained in our dna/human nature or whatever you want to call it. I wont stop him playing violent games unless the violence is very extreme or too terrifying for him. I also think I'm intelligent enough to realize the the Video Game Fairy doesn't appear and deliver games to my son in the middle of the night. I buy them. I play them. I know what hes playing. So sir, i think YOU are the one that needs to STFU. Once you take all the bullshit out of your comment, all you have really contributed was that there have been some peado's in the church. Ill be sure to forward that to Capt. Obvious.

Dtoid has very good reviews, however its a blog not a "video game review website."
