Chris Avellone becomes a Torment stretch goal
$3.5 million for the man behind Planescape: Torment
What would make Torment: Tides of Numenera, which recently smashed its Kickstarter goal in seven hours, a more scintillating prospect? How about the lead designer of its thematic predecessor, Planescape: Torment, the mind behind arguably the best Star Wars game ever made, Knights of the Old Republic 2, and co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, Chris Avellone?
It's a curious time we're living in where a human being can become a stretch goal, but that's exactly what's happening with Torment, should the project reach $3.5 million in funding. The Planescape scribe will have two roles if this goes ahead. He'll provide feedback on the title's creative elements, from characters and areas, to the story itself. On top of this, Avellone will design an eighth companion for the Last Castoff, working with Colin McComb and Monte Cook to ensure that the character will fit into both the game itself, and the universe of the Ninth World.
When Torment was first announced, there were some who weren't convinced by the project, seeing as that Avellone was so integral to Planescape, but would not be involved in the new game beyond endorsing it. Clearly they weren't the only ones wishing Avellone would get onboard. There are still 14 days to go before the end of the Kickstarter, and the funding counter is sitting at $2,884,262 as I write this. This is one stretch goal I see being reached quite easily.
