Chinatown Wars will attempt to 'change the perception' of the DS and its games photo

The adult-friendly DS title Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will do more than give players an interactive drug-selling experience – it may also completely redefine what they think of their DS and the games it can offer. In a recent interview with 1UP Rockstar Leeds’ big man Gordon Hall said his studio is seeking to prove that adult titles on the DS can succeed and in the process “change the perception” of the very kid-friendly platform.

From the interview:
... There was no previous business model that showed anything other than abject failure in the adult DS space. We came away from that chat with a target to get something onscreen that would really change the perception of the DS and the games it's capable of making. If we thought, after the initial test phase, that it had potential, we'd back it and hope we could do what Rockstar always tries to do and create new markets. If, though, it looked like we couldn't really impress people and excite them about something new, then we'd pull the plug straight away.

On name alone Hall probably realizes that the title will sell well. It’s hard to envision a DS shelf cluttered with bloody, pregnant-lady-kicking games but it is certainly welcome. If there’s one niche the DS hasn’t really appealed to yet, it’s the people who really enjoy killing realistic things after selling drugs to them.

Well it's not an RPG, so that's one notch to add on their belt.

How did Cammie manage to get behind the stylus in that Nintendo DS image?

er - well, I guess if they really want to change that goodie-goodie image, the best way to do it is by sending parents into an uproar.

Not sure what else to think on that, actually...

Wait, they're pregnant?! That makes me feel a little worse about the ass I've been tearing in Vice City Stories lately. No need to get the unborn entangled in my letting off steam, after all. Better to let them exist first, then give me a reason!

Anyway, I welcome Chinatown Wars, and I'm sure it'll do fine on the charts, but I think they're misplacing their bets if they think it'll singlehandedly usher in an era of portablizations of explicitly adult-oriented titles chock full o' violence and whatnot. Maybe some adult situations, sure, but, y'know, the boring ones like estranged relationships and paying taxes. We've got plenty of other perfectly good systems that're better suited to these sorts of games, for the most part. Megaman: Powered Up, as awesome as it was, didn't convince developers to make more squishy SD-style revivals for the PSP, after all. (Except that one Hammerin' Harry game, but I don't know whether that came first.)

A couple of people I know had the chance of playing an early build of this a few months ago. From what they said, it looks pretty good but is still very buggy. For instance, they would be driving and then all of a sudden cars start 'raining' on them from above.

Will still be good to see this when it is completely cleaned up and released.
