China takes candy, online games, from babies

China takes candy, online games, from babies photo
     Controversy

China, the world's leader in angering Nintendo, has decided that its youth should be spending their days doing something more productive than online gaming. They are instituting a mandatory registration system based on ID cards and a person's age, for gamers, that will force them into a five-hour-per-day maximum play time. Activities favored over gaming by the current regime include backbreaking labor, reading the collected works of Karl Marx, and growing luxurious moustaches of the sort that no woman could resist.

Aside from the moustache thing (which Destructoid, and our generous benefactors, heartily support), life in China is a dull affair, consisting mostly of long stretches of tedium punctuated only by bouts of boredom, and the occasional moment of striking monotony, so it's only natural that children might seek to escape the crushing blandiosity (yes, I just invented that word) of their home land through readily available virtual means. Of course, the government would like to dress this up as a terrifying health concern, and that their new regulations will only affect those horrible few who are truly in danger of harming themselves, others and your beloved family pet. Here's a quote;

"The system will only target minors who lack the self-discipline to control their playing time," said Kou Xiaowei, a Chinese state official.

Of course, this is tantamount to saying that you're only going to enslave the "minorities who don't have caucasian heritage" or that you're only going to "gas all of those who own dreidels"; such statements are the sort of thing that could only come out of a government official in a country where there is absolutely no chance of a commoner smashing in your window with a rock and beating you and your family to death. Thankfully, here in America, we're still willing to club our politicians.

Some of you might be thinking; "Oh, but five hours a day should be enough for anyone!" To which we respond, "You f***ing sheep! It's the principle of the thing! They're taking away people's right to privacy, the pursuit of happiness and the chance at getting more frags! Thomas Jefferson would personally go over there and kick their faces in with his d*** if he wasn't too busy having hot zombie sex with his hot zombie slave-wife." Then maybe we'd smirk, punch you in the junk and start making out with your girlfriend. Man, we are SO rad.

But how are anti-social WoW players supposed to grind and run instances until they pass out from lack of sleep?

hookaay... someone's had too much caffeine, i think.

But you're soo right... gamers should have the right to play however long they want. But then again, remember way back there was this news about a Korean kid (I think) who died because he played for several days straight?

I know you hate the site NEX (and most other DToids) but Kotaku has an article saying Sadness for the Wii is STILL in development. I think it is interesting.

Seriously, you gonna hate me know, but I think this is actually a good thing!
They should actually export that system WORLDWIDE. Online gaming is a hell of an addiction, trust me, I know what I'm talking about! I spent 8 month as a no life because of those games(well actually because of me allowing myself of getting addicted to them) and I'm 24 years old . It just gets addictive specially for children and teenagers. Kids gotta stop playing on the computer non-stop and start going outside like I used to do with my friends. Way more fun and way more healthy.

Don't get me wrong I have absolutely nothing against online gaming (waiting for Warhammer Online :p ), simply some people tend to try to escape real life a bit too much.

Too much of everything makes you an addict as they say..

Using slavery and the holocaust for your article? Classy. Because when you compare China to the murder of almost an entire race of people, they must be bad guys, right?

Meh.

@ eZ dAnTe,

I cant help but notice you're an Equilibrium fan who is all for exporting a system worldwide that restricts people's ability to make their own decisions.

you're right, we should blame the videogame industry as a whole for the virtual insanity of few. and we should punish people who excercise personal responsibility by governmentally babysittying them. good point. personal responsibility should have nothing to do with our actions. maybe we should governmentally enforce a rating system for games that number in more than 20 hours in length, have replay value, or allow online connectability.

dumb.

@pandlcg: Yeah, I must admit that's kinda ambiguous :p I am for freedom of the individual, don't get me wrong, all I was saying is that some people tend to exagerate their hobbies. Especially kids and teenagers. Come on, you're not gonna tell me that staying at home all day playing addictive MMO's is good for your mental and your body? But for the rest I agree with you ^^

@Auto Glocktopus: First of all: Also cocks!
Second: quote "Don't get me wrong I have absolutely nothing against online gaming (waiting for Warhammer Online :p ), simply some people tend to try to escape real life a bit too much. "
All I was saying is that for some MMO-players (actually more than just some) the virtual life get's way more interesting than the real life. Who could blame them? Life can be shitty, especially as a teenager where your feelings tend to be a bit uncontrolable by times.
Know I can perfectly understand that some people may not agree with my point of view : Quote "Seriously, you gonna hate me know, but I think this is actually a good thing! " Noticed the part where I say "You gonna hate me know" ? No? As you can see I already expected disagrement.

I was just trying to explain my point of view, know if YOU can't accept that not everybody has the same appreciation on individual freedom or politics or even gaming, well... bummer...

For the rest of you people: Enjoy your day; cause I will :p
