China's Jack Thompson: online gaming is a major cause of stupidity and crime photo

Jack Thompson may be the one most of us associate with the anti-videogame stance, but he's hardly cornered the market with his view on the subject. Hailing out of China is a 61-year-old Sociologist named Tao Hongkai who has a few outspoken words of his own to share with the public on the great videogame debate. His greatest argument? Online gaming kills brain cells.

According to Tao Hongkai, you can expect to lose 10 percent of your IQ just by gaming online for a three-year time span. I really feel for you readers out there who have been doing the online thing for most of your lives -- surely you are intellectually stunted beyond all hope by now. However, the fun doesn't stop there. Would you believe that over 70 percent of juvenile crime in China can be traced back to Internet addiction? I still don't believe it.

With statistics like that, one might be led to believe that crime had no reason to exist before videogames and the Internet. Sounds to me like Jack Thompson might want to give this guy a call, and chat sometime. They seem to have a lot in common. I sense the early rumblings of the next dynamic duo in the making.

As usual, this comes for an old person who just doesn't get it. Of course he's going to feel his generation is superior to our generation, it happens every generation. When a lot of us get older, I'm sure we'll look back and think we're superior as well. I know when I see what TV shows my niece watching, I think "wow, this makes kids stupid", but you know I use to watch some pretty stupid shit too when I was kid. It's along those same lines. People just naturally judge things they don't understand.

Give me a break, just another person paid to find another scapegoat as to why youth of a COMMUNIST nation are forced to crime, not the widespread poverty and corruption right? Videogames? Rad.

This isn't ground breaking stuff, indeed a direct correlation between usage of the internet and violence was originally discovered by Max Weber in 1892(Weber, Socilogy: LAWLS, 1892). He predicted that this violence would necessarily manifest itself in a huge scale conflict sometime around the second decade of the 20th Century. While Weber failed to take into account the stupidity caused by addiction to MMOs in late 19th and early 20th century Germany we can quite clearly see this effect evident in Alfred Graf von Schlifen, who was among the first to get to level 70 in WoW and was responsible for the 'von Schlifen plan' which failed to gain Germany the early advantage it so required in its Internet fuelled feud.

Chinese scientists say exactly what the government wishes, unless they want themselves and their families to disappear in the middle of the night. These results are about as trustworthy as a researcher for the tobacco industry determining that cigarettes are actually good for you.

Guess I wasn't very clear with that one. Dynamic duos: Batman and Robin, Green Hornet and Kato, and finally Jack Thompson and Tao Hongka. Get it?

Corneliuscack, You are a genius. I shall change it in your honor! Thanks.

Well, If you count goldfarming as a crime... Anyhow, there's this urban myth that there was a korean high-school girl that sold her virginity for a rare item in some MMO, maybe that accounts for something. Phbbt. Or maybe not.

Just because playing WoW over the last few years has made me more lazy and less inclined to be productive, doesnt mean that its made me dumb, or more likely to rob a convenience store. One word for that guy.

NOOB!
