Child of Eden and Shadows of the Damned need more sales photo

According to numbers procured by our friends at Joystiq, it looks like psychedelic onrails rhythm-action shooter Child of Eden (coming soon to the PS3) only sold 34,000 units in its first month of release in the United States. Considering the game has been hyped for two E3's in a row as one of Kinect's few killer apps, I think it's safe to say that those numbers are disappointing.

Worse still are the reported sales of my favorite game of June 2011, and one of my favorite games of the year, the hilarious and horrific Shadows of the Damned. That game reportedly only sold 24,000, and that's the PlayStation and the Xbox 360 versions combined. I really hope the game picks up steam over the coming months, but regardless of the game's future, this is a discouraging start to say the least.

Mini-rant time: for years, people claimed that third-party games didn't sell in big numbers because they were on the Wii. Ultra-violent new intellectual properties in the Japanese action/comedy genre like MadWorld and No More Heroes were often cited as proof of this theory, as were retail priced on-rails shooters like Dead Space: Extraction and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles. It was always my opinion that games in those genres would have trouble selling on any console, especially the PS3 and 360, where player expectation is generally more high maintenance than on the Wii. The sales of Shadows of the Damned and Child of Eden are a sad indicator that I may have been right.

Shadows of the damned is short, has no replay value, and has extremely dated and clunky controls. It has a lot of charm, but so does my uncle, and he isnt a best selling game either.

Man, that's kind of a bummer, albeit an expected one.

I bought CoE day 1, and will be picking up SotD as soon as my next paycheck comes in so that number is going to be 1 greater. :)

Luckily, I think as long as he breaks even Suda won't be disappointed to the point where he gives up on games. He just seems like the type of guy who's releasing games to entertain people first and be a millionaire second. Not saying I don't want him to be a millionaire, 'cause he deserves to be one. :)

Here's to better sales! (There's a beer glass raised in the air. You can't see it, but it's there.)

Child of Eden is already my favourite game this year, and I'm still savouring SotD slowly but surely. Not to mention soundtracks to both games are phenomenal. It's games like these that deserve more spotlight in the industry. As Typhonic said, do your part, gamers!

Oh and @Headerpic, I noticed they both have the same "ugh" expression...

People can't buy what they don't know exists. Only reason I knew when Shadow of the Damned came out is because I constantly check blogs and listen to podcasts.

I bought Shadows of the Damned day 1 and loved it but I can definitely see why people wouldn't get it right away. $60 is a lot of money and a game like shadows is almost a sure fire bet for a price drop after a few months. I justified the price because of my love of Killer 7 and No More Heroes but it would be hard to recommend the game at full price to a friend that will just play it once and be done. I'm interested in Child of Eden but I'm waiting for the ps3 version, as that is the system I own, but I doubt I will buy it for the full price.
I know it can cheapen the image of the game, but sometimes a lower $30-40 price point would be in a game's favor, just look at the original Katamari Damacy when it launched for $20 on ps2.

Shadows of the Damned is one of the most fun games I've played this gen. Just saying.

Why is it that we act all confused when awesome games without mainstream viability don't sell these days? In the mid 00s, publishers went strong at the mainstream market to make more profit. It was assumed that these people, the ones who didnt care much about gaming as a medium, would get pulled into gaming with these mainstream games and eventually open themselves up to all gaming had to offer. They never had to, publishers pushed out more and more mainstream stuff to the point that it killed anything that wasnt mainstream. This also drove up the cost of development as they were now making games mostly for people who respond mostly to all the shiny things extra money buys for a game.

You want to know why these games simply wont sell? Ask your grandma with a copy of Wii sports why, she'll give you the same basic answer as a CoD superfan.

Fuck, Shadows is awesome. Games liek that used to be abundant, now we're practically begging people to buy the few that come out so that they dont die outright.

Shadows of the damned is probably up there with Child of eden and Portal 2 as my favourite game of the year so far. I hate the modern gamer who doesn't so much as glance at a game unless it has a military aspect about it.

In No More Heroes defense, people were talking about it a lot when it came out. I barely even heard anything about Shadows of the Damned until a week before it came out. I don't know if it was poor marketing or mysterious marketing backfiring.

No offense Holmes, I like your tastes usually but every new thing I saw from shadows of the damned looked worse and worse. I can see where its appeal might be, but the dialogue is of the cheesy variety (the not good kind) and the story is so over the top it borderlines on "why do I care" status. Its like that kid in class that was always trying to be funny or cool but just ended up being an obnoxious loudmouth. Good intentions and all that jazz.

As for child of Eden... well no shit. What 360 owner would care to play that? Regardless of "kinectivity" that games fans are primarily on the ps3 and PC. And I think at this point more than a few of us feel a little shafted we missed out on the experience in the first place.

I echo everything that DethLocke said about SotD. I wanted to love the game, and the off-the-wall elements and funny dialogue and interesting elements went a long way, but the kicker is that there is absolutely no replay value. You have the story...and that's it. No New Game +, no challenge mode, nothing, and that's just too big to overlook. I'd say pick it up in a bargain bin, and sadly you won't have long to wait. But SotD kinda did it to itself, it's not really a great game; it tries really hard, but it falls short. And that makes me really sad because I tried so hard to love this game, but I just can't.

wow that's so fucking depressing. I'm dead broke to the point where the only game purchase i've been able to make in the last .... 7 months? .... was from the steam summer sale and i seriously was about to shell out money i didn't have for Shadows.

I can understand why people were willing to buy DNF for the sheer novelty of it but I don't get how either of these games have sold next to nothing. I think beyond anything this (and singularity) just proves why companies really need to start pushing much more aggressive advertising on their new IPs instead of just looking at sales numbers on a game that had virtually no advertising.

Still though if that 34,000 number is correct, it's retarded that this would have sold better as a PC exclusive in a single day had it been part of the Steam Summer Sale.

I don't really care about Child of Eden (Rez is overrated), but Shadows of the Damned really bums me out. Yeah it's only funny based on how well you can tolerate dick jokes, the gameplay itself doesn't feel as unique as it could be, and Suda51 seems a little toned down for this game, but damn did I have fun with that game. And it's such a shame to hear that happening. Then again, sales =/= quality, so maybe I'm getting bummed out about nothing.

Child of Eden sold a lot more than I thought it would, for being a pretty under the radar game. I've shown it off to a few good friends, and most of them have picked up their own copy, so I'm doing my part.

SotD though... The fact that CoE is doing better on one platform should be all the proof you need to see that it's just meh... Seriously, the soundtrack is great, I like the game's atmosphere and characters, but not being able to skip past cutscenes, being forced to go through the tutorial 3 times, and the controls, I'll just say I'm glad I rented it... Getting more for my money out of EDF and CoE.

Child of Eden, yes - it's a brilliant, unique game pioneering brand new technology, and it has TONS of replay value, bartering itself essentially as a score attack game - and it only charged $50 out of the gate, which is commendable.

Shadows...enh. Honestly, I beat it once on Hard (it wasn't hard), and although I LOVED it, I would not recommend it as a purchase. The second time around is really repetitive, and with no New Game+ option OR extra costumes/abilities, it's really hard to justify to people to spend $60 on it, especially given how many good releases are on the horizon. This game screams for a New Game+.

So I kind of agree with your mini-rant, haha.

I'm not a big fan of rail shooters, and the word on SotD is that it's a standard shooter with some great style elements. That much isn't worth $60 to me, but I'll be glad to pick it up when it goes on sale.

@Manthai

"Also, there are plenty of indie games on Steam that sell more than 24,000 copies."

I have to think that a large part of that is due to pricing. I bought Terraria for $7.50 for crying out loud!

I would have bought Shadows of the Damned as I'm a huge Suda fan but there just wasn't enough content to justify spending 60$ imo(not even a new games plus). It was a amazing rental though and I'll buy when it drops to 30 or less.

I did buy Child of Eden though, surprised it didn't sell more given all the hype.

I'll buy Shadows when I can get it for $15 new. As much as this site covered it, and how much I love Murakami, this game just was under the radar for me. None of the trailers really drew me in, and as funny as dick jokes can be, the ones I saw were lame. As for Child of Eden, that's just not my type of game.

I played Shadows of the Damned at a friends house and found that it is a good game but not at the price of a full retail game. Id buy this probably around $20-30 because that's the most Id pay for a game with little to no replay value.

As for Child of Eden it lost my purchase as soon as they decided to associate it with the $130 web cam and Wii Remote + Glowing Ball

This just helps prove that people are tired of the 60 dollar asking price for relatively short single player games. Both of these games are amazing and if they were 40 bucks or less on release day I would've picked them up no problem. But they're confined to being rentals for me and probably a lot of other poor gamers :{ They need to go ON sale, more like.

Strange games are strange in ANY platform, if they don't sell in one of them, they will not sell in any other, is that simple.

Both games should have been marked at $29-$39. When will publishers learn? Now neither will get a sequel and developers freedom to create just took another hit.

New IPs that lack extensive marketing campaigns should ship between the prices I previously mentioned. That is impulse buy area and both would have sold substantially well because of it. Get a fan base and when you create your inevitable sequel you can sell it for $59. Publishers are arrogantly stuck on the 60 dollar mark. They are hurting themselves and the overall industry because of it.

How is Child of Eden "under the radar" when it's basically the only game (aside from Dance Central) that's out for Kinect?

Wasn't kinect the "fastest selling" tech of all time? Then why aren't people buying the biggest(only) hyped game for it? Well, just goes to show nobody gives a fuck about this tired gimmick shit.

Don't have a job so I can't go blowing money on every potentially awesome game ever. Also, advertisement has been minimal. And it is a short game with little replay value. And according to Yahtzee it was also incredibly easy.

Shadow makes me think of Singularity in a lot of ways. Little advertising awareness. Short game. No replay value. Too easy to beat. If the game had been $40 at launch the numbers would have been better. The Cursed Crusade is being smart in that regard which means I may actually buy it right away.

After reading most of the comments here, I can't help but feel I'm the only who thought that Child of Eden is GOTY material. I remember someone on DTOID here wrote a blog about how he had fun out of BIT.TRIP BEAT way more than playing CoD with his brother (to that person, sorry I can't remember your handle, but great blog nonetheless). I had the same feeling while playing CoE; the beat of the music, the energy of the graphics and the rhythm-based shooting... I had more fun in a single archive of CoE (Evolution is my favourite) than a whole night session of, say, GoW Horde mode. For the first time in a long while, it's not about the competition of levelling up or getting killstreaks or who spouted the best mom/dick joke of the day - it's all about the euphoria and immersing yourself in the game. And actually having fun in it.

I can' say the same about SotD, as although I did have a blast with it, ultimately it simply felt like another shooter. But you have to credit Suda51 for creating a unique world that is not made of brown and grey. If only they not made a shooter out of the premise and something along the line of, say, ICO, then it'd most likely receive better recognition from DTOID gamers.

Again @WHeaderpic do you guys NOT notice the "ugh" expressions!? It's genius! It's- nevermind.

can't say I'm completely surprised. Shadows of the Damned got very minimal press, it looks weird, came out during end of school and just before summer and it's got barely any replay value. Child of Eden is basically a weird game, priced at 50$ for 2 hours and it's better with Kinect which some don't either have or never use

Sad to hear but no real surprise. I'm waiting for a pricedrop on Shadows of the Damned because I had enough to do/play in June and only now getting to the reduced-price Dungeon Siege III and Hunted. Given that those two can both be picked up together for less than either title retailed for in the UK, I bet they didn't sell that great either. And by the time I'm done with those, Shadows will be 15-18 pounds or something.

After playing Deathsmiles twice and Rez HD three times, there was just no way in hell I was going to pick up Child of Eden at launch prices. I want it, and I'm sure it's great, but since I'll probably play it twice and forget about it again, that's not worth the $70+ it would cost me.

If you target such a niche market with a game that might be great, maybe you should make it downloadable and/or episodic? Now we just end up paying downloadable game prices for it anyway.

I'll be all over Child of Eden after a price drop. Everything I've read indicates it's too short for the price tag. Shadows of the Damned though... I'll be honest. I'll probably never buy because it just doesn't look very polished. It probably has an interesting story and quirky characters with shit controls and unbalanced gameplay. There are just too many games that have the complete package to look at Shadows of the Damned.
