Chicago Transit Authority bans M-rated game ads photo

Oh, Chicago. There was trouble earlier this year when the CTA pulled Grand Theft Auto IV ads from buses early, breaking contract. They pulled them following some violence in the city, but a settlement has those ads back up for the next six weeks, reports GamePolitics.

After the six-week GTA IV stretch is over, Chicago is pulling ads for M-rated games from the CTA's vechicles and properties, and then banning them forever. Check out this crap:

Last week, the CTA board voted to ban advertising for video games rated "M" and above. The ordinance, which takes effect Jan. 1, cites a "demonstrable correlation" between intensely violent video games and violent or aggressive behavior.

First off, there's no proven correlation between advertisements for violent video games and aggressive behavior. I'm embarrassed for the Chicago Transit Authority for this statement.

We're with GamePolitics in the suggestion that the ESA should get involved in this.

Correlation is NOT causation.

As a Chicagoan, I am deeply embarrassed. No wonder the East and West coast consider us the unenlightened masses.

How about R-rated movies then?

Ok, they should stop advertising R-rated movies, adult oriented music, tv shows, and radio. Oh, oh, whats wrong? Oh thats right, violence in video games is bad, but violence in other media is a-ok. Yeah, that's the kind of thinking that is screwing everyone over. It's like saying its ok to yell fire in a movie theater, but it's not ok to yell bomb.

As a Chicagoan this does sicken me. The CTA has been a budget crisis for a while now and I imagine they are losing more money as a result of this. I agree the ESA might want to look into this. I don't think there are any studies that show violent media advertising leads to more crime.

As anoon said ... anyone with a basic knowledge of statistics can tell you that correlation does NOT equal causation. Its the first thing you learn and this is just more unenlightened crap from the people in power.
But we will rise up ... we will rise

It's ok. Games will eventually get the respect that they deserve.

Well, if the M rating is supposed to prevent minors from buying the game, I can see how it should follow that advertising should be tempered so as to try and limit exposure to the minors that this game isn't supposed to be sold to. Hypocrisy aside of course, though M is equivalent to NC-17 more than an R rated movie. Either way, I don't care. I appreciate the ratings, but let me decide if my children or myself are mature enough to play them.

if they are going to do that then they should pull ads for R rated movies as well

But ... but ... they're doing it for the CHILDREN?! If you're against this idea, you're against children! Don't you know that by now?!

Ah, damn ... I have to clean off my keyboard now ...

A statement like that pisses me THE FUCK OFF because there is no God damn proof.

What is this country coming to?

The CTA has a history of making wicked stupid decisions. Why should now be any different? Every year they come out with a new Doomsday scenario (this is what they actually call it) and never fix the actual problem. They just hike the fair and cut hundreds of buses and trains.
