Chicago Public Transit forced to allow M-rated game ads photo

The law is sometimes a slow and ponderous beast, but it eventually makes up its mind. Way back at the end of 2008, the Chicago Public Transit system banned M-rated games from being advertised on the sides of buses and the like. In reaction to this, the ESA sued. Flash-forward to now and we finally have some action in the case, and it appears to be a win for gaming.

While the case has not been decided yet, the ESA has reported that the courts have issued an injunction into the ban on the ads. This means that the ads can't be banned until a decision on the case has been made. The news comes via a Video Game Voters Network e-mail, which says this is an important win for gamers all around, and points out how hypocritical the CTA is being by banning M-rated game ads, but not R-rated film ads.

The fight isn't over, though, as no ruling has actually been handed down on the suit. The VGVN is urging everyone in Illinois to get in touch with their lawmakers and speak out. They're hoping that the CTA will drop the ban now and not go into a prolonged legal battle.

[Thanks, John_B]

This is stupid. By that same logic, there should not be any rated R movie posters on buses either. Damn ignorants...

Wow, I remember this - seems like so very long ago. Hopefully things work out right, though at least they got the injunction.

Rapelay is a pornographic game, and that obviously is illegal to publicly advertise on a bus or something of sorts.

CTA has been forced to increase fare prices, cut jobs, eliminate bus routes, etc. due to serious budget problems. So instead of advertising M-rated games to all the kids going to school, they'd rather seek loans and cut spending. I need to get out of the ridiculous state of Illinois....
