Check out what I got in the mail yesterday photo

As a general rule, I don't check for mail sent to my apartment. I've always kept my parent's address as the location for any bills that I couldn't have handled via e-mail (of which I have none at this point). Before living with someone who actually received correspondence from people, it was not unlikely for six months to pass before I bothered to check for anything.

Late last night, I was reminded of some mail on its way and dutifully trundled out to the mailbox to see if it had arrived when I came across this curious item. In a plain white envelope with a standard mailing label and no return address came the contents you see in the above photograph.

It was a little odd that I would get a brochure for a psychiatric hospital located in Michigan but I've had my share of strange things arrive in my mailbox. What first clued me in to some shenanigans being afoot was that the letter originated from Oregon and the return postcard was addressed to a PO Box in Texas.

So, I twittered about it and quickly discovered that I was not alone. Hamza had received the exact same letter and had thrown it out without a second thought. A quick Google search found that the fine folks at Giant Bomb have received it also. This is clearly viral marketing.

For what, exactly, I have no idea. I'm currently trying not to think about it lest it occupy all my time better spent on other things. But, hell, you guys obviously aren't doing anything important right now. I've included some photos in the gallery below so you can check out the text and get started on the hunt (sorry, no scanner). What do you think it could all mean?

Fascinating. "It's always darkest before the dawn" is the slogan of the Argent Crusade in World of Warcraft. Or this could be a sister campus to Arkham Asylum. From the Giant Bomb article though, I think their supposition is a little more plausible than either of mine.

Pretty cool when they send you stuff without saying who they are. Kinda stalkerish actually, watch out Conrad!

Actually Alan Wake kinda fits this viral marketing. When will that damn game come out!

Don't know if anyone noticed, but "Alan Wake" takes place in Bright Falls. So "Alan Wake" is definitely a likely possibility.

giant bomb seem to think it's to do with alan wake, and for some reason that was the first thing i thought despite knowing almost nothing about the game.

i think at some point i'm going to have to start my own fake viral marketing campaign. send identical cyptic packages to the right people, and it's sure to create a fuss.

I think the Alan Wake plot has something to do with the main guy going to some sort of retreat after having a breakdown or something. Considering it's pretty vague, Alan Wake would be my guess too.

I thought Alan Wake as soon as i saw it.

"it's always darkest before dawn" I'd never heard that proverb before, it's kind of cool.

I recognised "It's always darkest before the dawn" from The Dark Knight. Arkham Asylum maybe?

I dunno, I'm not good at this whole "subliminal message" shazzam.

Huh, the guy's signature looks kind of fishy. Anyone care to take a crack at decoding it?

Also, if this is Alan Wake, I think we just figured out what the team has been doing fort the last two years.

Ok it HAS to be Alan Wake because before I even looked at these comments I thought of Alan Wake too. If it is... the designer and person behind this mini-campaign is a genius.

100% Alan Wake. It's clear from the pictures. He does in fact to go a psychiatric hospital for his insomnia. You fight the monsters in the game with light. The whole bright dawn name is just irony pointing that out.

1. the A in the signature looks like the starfleet symbol, so new star trek game. 2.but seriously, I'm pretty sure others have checked but the zip is for Kalamazoo, which has a few psychiatric facilities. someone said, that he suffers from amnesia. electroshock therapy has been known to cause memory loss and confusion.

It's a letter sent to the entire video-game industry by Jack Thompson himself in order to prove that every one of us is crazy and needs to be treated in a mental ward for our "video-game addictions." Also, Faulker has a fancy signature.

Silent Hill Wii revolves around psychological test.

Is it as prominently used in Alan Wake?

Kind of hope we see some Silent Hill footage- I'm so curious.
