Check out these Secret of Monkey Island SE comparison shots photo

If you’re an adventure game fan, it’s hard to walk away from Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition unimpressed for a simple reason: with the press of a button, you can switch from the new art style to the old. This can be done at any point, be it during a conversation or in the middle of action. And, oh, how those memories flood back when you see it.

Earlier this afternoon LucasArts released a batch of comparison shots for Secret of Monkey Island SE so you can get a sense of what LucasArts improved visually. The images are available in the gallery below.

It bears repeating: despite the new visual style (and the addition of the dog in SCUMM), no core changes have been made. Secret of Monkey Island: SE is Secret of Monkey Island -- a point we’re completely happy with.

So I can play the old school version on XBLA? Sweet.

So they took a game with early 90's graphics and gave it late 90's graphics? Nice! I think George Lucas must have had a hand in this. 'Give 'em an ok looking one now and in two years we'll suck 'em in with another NEW version!'

All that aside, I'm totally buying this.

The old graphics look more grittier and darker. Especially the lava and walls.

The header image proves that in the new Monkey Island characters do not talk!
They communicate with eyebrow gestures and flashing. It's revolutionary.

I think the in game stuff is good - though they always seem to try to make Guybrush look increasingly more ridiculous.

Fuck! I just beat this game for the first time today! No joke. I didn't know that they were coming out with a special edition. Talk about bad timing. It's not like it has a lot of replay value.

Oh, and that dog was there before. Just look for the mess of grey and brown pixels. And no Firefox, it is not spelled "gray". Only 'tards spell it that way.

@doos: those aren't late 90s graphics if I understood correctly its full-hd 2D, think SFII HD remix.

I prefer me some old-skool lava.
Also, why does new Elaine have hair that looks like a baseball cap?

I liked the old version of Guybrush, I wished they didn't change the character that much. Much like my reaction with the hd version of Ryu in Street Fighter HD remake.

Hmm, the one running at 1920x1080 has less detail than the one at 320x200... Just look at those pics of Elaine.

Really don't like the new art style, yuk.

Now Curse of Monkey Island, THERE was some sweet artwork!

@turbofail

thats the beauty of it. play the game in the old style if you like it more. More games should have this sort of retro remake look to it.

I'm not against the new art style, but having never played this before, I'll be playing it with the original graphics.

@gamadaya: Yes the dog was in the original game, but his closeup when you talk to him wasn't!

Finally, some screenshots bigger than the [miniscule] ones on the official site! I'll just have a look... oh that's a shame.
