Check out the Gran Turismo 5 real-world side-by-side images photo

This morning, in the office, I said that I was so excited about Gran Turismo 5. Destructoid Editor-in-Chief Nick Chester replied, "I have to say, I don't get it." And then he remembered: "But then again, you don't get the music game peripheral thing."

That's okay. Everyone does not have to get Gran Turismo. But those that do are just as easily excited about the game as I am, despite the insane length of time it has been in development.

This Japanese blog has side-by-side images of real-world Japanese locales set next to screencaps of a GT5 replay shown at gamescom last week. It looks like Google Maps supplied the other half; f*ck going outside, right? This track is set in Tokyo, in the Akasaka area. The image above compares the side of a stadium there -- very impressive.

The team at Polyphony Digital did their homework, taking tens of thousands of pictures to make the courses as real as possible. After the jump, you can check out a full video of the R246 course. Watching that, I think they did a fantastic job.

Are you with Nick, or are you with me?

Great, except that in most games the fictional tracks are way more interesting than the real ones.
As long as the game plays well, I don't care if it looks like reality - PGR has been doing this for years anyway.

That doesn't even look remotely real.

You know, if they ever do announce an actual release date, it may end the Sony tradition of showing incredible video of the game at so many gaming press events. I don't play racing games much, but the video I've seen of this game is jaw dropping.

I don't get it either however I do get the music game thing. Ironically my uncle loves GT to death but not music games and we argue over their appeal occasionally.

But then again he's a car guy who has seen many races both in the stands and in the cars and I'm a music guy who loves playing music. It's just interest really.

My Driving Force GT wheel has a hard-on for Q4/09. They better not push this shit back again or I will be furious.

It looks gorgeous, but the only racing games I've played are Outrun, Daytona, and Burnout.

Fucking love it! They need to take out those 24 hour endurance races though.

Nurburgring + 24 hours = FFFFUUUU

I will most definitely be picking this up, but my attention span for Gran Turismo really dropped after the 2nd one. I spent a lot of time on those first two trying to complete everything and I got pretty deep into them, but by the 3rd one I stopped playing like halfway in. Just felt like everything was on repeat with a better presentation. Here's hoping we don't all have to complete the same license tests again.

I'm with Nick. I enjoyed the first two GT games all right, but after the third one I realized it was the same thing over and over, and I wasn't really having that much fun with it to begin with.

I actually mapped out the course in Google Maps not long ago. I'll post about it later. :)

These comparisons aren't as flattering as I would expect. That said? Game looks pretty fun. Still a wee bit heavy on the bumper cars (even in this footage), but fun nontheless.

I'm just waiting for people to start spending their free time comparing this to Forza 3. This game looks jaw-droppingly beautiful.

It looks good. The thing I find funny though is when GT3 came out it looked a lot more impressive. I thought some shots actually looked true to life, until I "got use to" the graphics. I guess it's harder to keep up the illusion in HD.

@Los255

You do realise you could get the AI to drive those for you? Along with every other endurance race.

That's what Driving Mode B was there for you :)

Nobody drove the 24 hour races :P

@Zippy

Exactly. Since I bet 99.9% of people DON'T actually do the 24 hour races, why have them there at all?

Save space for Rally or something.

^___^

It does look very nice, but I'm just not that impressed it - at this point I'll only be renting the game so I can race around the Top Gear test track.
Though things can change....

Other than the more advnaced graphics, this track was introduced in GT2, so it's realy nothing new. Also, you would think the photgs could have gotten some better angles compared to the screen shots. You can see the similarities, but they aren't very exact shots.

My bad. Track I'm thinkin gof is Tokyo R246 from GT3. Been a while since I played those. May not be identical, but it looks to be the same area of Tokyo (around PD office building).
