Check out Miyamoto's discarded touch screen RPG photo

For every great DS game we actually get, you can bet there are a dozen cool ideas that probably never saw the light of day. Case in point: the picture above is from a discarded Nintendo patent which actually credits Miyamoto himself as one of the inventors. It's a basic RPG in which monsters randomly attack you, but the difference from your average grind comes in how you interact with the monster. To attack, you poke it!

Of course, if you have shaky hands and you aim poorly, you miss (and you really do miss!) You can also do more damage by hitting the head than the body, and do less damage if you hit the shield ... you get the idea. According to Siliconera (see more concept pics there), the game would have drawn inspiration from FPS or light gun games and adapted them to an RPG. Neat!

I wonder how this would have worked had it been fleshed out until a retail release, as I know a lot of people who game on their iPhones complain having to use their finger to touch the screen can obstruct too much of the action. Would you have enjoyed a game like this?

An RPG where you attack enemies by touching them! Why didn't I think of that!!

Im surprised that there are actually new idea's to be done in videogames. I thought everything had already been taken :p

A game that has RPG elements and FPS plus touch or motion controls how revolutionary!!

Not.... Dragon Quest Swords anyone?

@Detect
Haha I love it when spammers can't even spell correctly.

This game looked looks like it was truly meant to be canned. Now I just want to go play BattleClash.

What will he think of next?!

As long as the AI could move and block intelligently, I think I would be motivated enough to buy it, yes.

Think of the possibilities. You could cast spells on screen like dawn of sorrow, but it would not be as annoying since it would be live action and you would already have your stylus out.

Aww, I would've played it. Of course, if the enemy had some method of blocking (as did you), anyway.

Honestly, DS stylus > iPhone finger, since you can at least try to use the stylus like a drum instead of a poking device. And with most people, the stylus is way thinner than your finger. =P

Thank god they scrapped this so we can get Watch Miyamoto and Reggie's Miis Do Pushups.

I would imagine the combat would play out similar to Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii, which was a neat game. I think it could be pretty good if they fleshed this out in a full release.

This idea has already been done, just not with the physically touching the screen.

It might have been interesting with a great AI. I'm thinking about real-time combat stages.

Sexy!

I absolutely love Shigeru Miyamoto.

A game like this would have been great.

I think I would rather have seen this implemented as a new IP rather than an update on an old game.

Do it Miyamoto! DO IT PLEASE! :D

Just so you guys know, I was super tempted to name this post TEN DAMAGES with no other explanation. There's a meme waiting to happen in there somewhere.

@Colette

If such a day comes when 10 damages is as well known as "O Rly?" or "nom nom" or even "boom headshot", I will be glad I witnessed it's birthing place.

I think I know a way to improve it even further.
Imagine a dragable shield to block, so in FPS vieuw you got a shield you can drag around and block attacks with, and can poke to attack the enemies.
You could even poke the shield to do a shield bash and stun some enemies.

and just to clearafy, the shield constantly remains on screen, might give visuall blockage..... make it slightly transperant?

It would be fun to play a traditional RPG with moving targets. This game sounds like something I would want to play.

lol 10 damages.
I love me RPGs on my DS, and this would have been great. But then again the odds of this appearing US side would be slim. Would have loved to play it tho.

An FPS/RPG. Sounds intriguing. I think it might have been difficult to pull of, but if anyone can do it, it'd be Miyamoto.

what is it with Nintendo and creating RPGs that I actually enjoy? this idea reminds me of that Dragon Quest Wii game where you sliced up blobs and whatnot, but twice as awesome.
