Finally. It's finally finished. Destructoid Story -- a visual novel I made based off of members of the Destructoid community-- is finished.
I made it in a little program called RPG Maker VX Ace. This is a visual novel that was conceived as something to be enjoyed between just three people: Brightside, Firion, and I. It was just a random idea I got one night after watching some Clannad. I thought it would be funny if I made a visual novel in RPG Maker with the three of us as the main characters.
Little did I know that it would grow. And grow. And grow. I started putting other people from Destructoid's community in the visual novel. I started adding more and more to the story. To give you an idea of just how large Destructoid Story became, here are some fun facts. I started making the visual novel back in February. I easily spent 200-250 hours making this thing and proofreading it. It's comprised of almost 800 pictures, over 100 songs, and a hell of a lot of text. From here on out, I think the best way to talk about Destructoid Story would be in Q&A form. I'm going to try to anticipate questions that might come up and answer them here. Question: What's up with Destructoid Story's name?
Answer: I just suck at naming things.
Question: RPG Maker?! BLEGH!
Answer: That's not a question, but yes. It's not an RPG, though. It's almost totally a visual novel. Pictures upon pictures upon pictures, text upon text upon text, and plenty of branches to go around (well, a decent number). It looks like a visual novel, it feels like one, and it plays like one. Happy?
Question: What's Destructoid Story about?
Answer: It's about a high school girl, Firion, who moves to the east coast and starts going to a school called Destructoid High. That's all I'm telling you. Yes, that seems like the most generic start to a visual novel ever. I won't deny that it is. And yes, I know that I didn't really tell you what Destructoid Story is about. Well, I'm don't want to spoil anything. At least, not past the screenshots (and good luck totally figuring out what's going on just based off of those). But! I will say that things get pretty wild depending on what path you go down. Each one has its own unique feel. Each one is interactive in different ways. The same goes for the bad endings that you can get in the first act.
Question: Well, can you tell me what the genre of the visual novel is? Is it like some sort of eroge visual novel?
Answer: Lord no. There's no erotic content in this visual novel. Or is there? But to seriously answer that question, the visual novel switches genres depending on what path you go down. That all contributes to the unique feel that each path has. To give you an idea of some of the genres, there's: slice of life (act one, obviously), action, romance, horror, science-fiction, adventure, comedy, and so on. Above all, the one constant throughout Destructoid Story is comedy. You will see comedy in every single act. Not necessarily every scene, but it's in every path. I like to make people laugh, so it's only natural for me to try to make you laugh throughout the whole thing.
Question: Can you tell me more about the paths?
Answer: Sure. Destructoid Story has three main paths. Brightside's path, Browneye's path, and my path. Which path you end up on depends on the decisions you make in the first act of Destructoid Story. Each path has an act two and three. Simple. There are also three bad endings that you can get in the first act, depending on your choices. I've included flowcharts in the folder with the visual novel for every act. I've also included a detailed walkthrough for Browneye's third act in the folder, since it's arguably the most interactive act of all. Not that you should need to use it, but it's there.
Question: How many times do I have to go through the first act to hit up every path?
Answer: You'll have to go through the first act a minimum of twice to hit every path. Or maybe not. Maybe you'll only have to redo a few scenes if you make good use of your saves. I HIGHLY recommend checking out the flowchart for the first act and planning out a course of action before you get too far into it. I don't want you to have to spend any more time reading Destructoid Story than you need to.
Question: Which path do you recommend I start with?
Answer: Go for whichever you want. If it helps, I'll give you a bit more information on the paths. Browneye's is the one most rooted in the real world. Brightside's path and my path get a little out there. Browneye's path is pretty long, as is mine. Brightside's isn't as meaty. If I were you, I'd save the best path (which I consider to be Brightside's) for last, but do what you want.
Question: How long is Destructoid Story?
Answer: Destructoid Story is roughly eight hours long if you go for every bad ending (in the first act) and every path. I think that's pretty decent.

One thing I want to say about this. Do not go into Destructoid Story thinking that everyone on this list is going to act like the person they're based on. For instance, Benny Disco does not act like Benny Disco. I can't write Benny Disco. No one but Benny Disco can write Benny Disco. As I put people from the community in, many of them sort of became my own characters. They might have traits of the people they're based on, but do NOT go in expecting Everyday to be whipping out metaphors in every other sentence or Reinhold to necessarily act like Reinhold. Just a fair warning that I want to give.
Question: What did you draw inspiration from for Destructoid Story?
Answer: Oh, I drew inspiration from a whole bunch of different things. You'll hear the inspiration and you'll see it. Just to name some things: Persona, Danganronpa, the Ace Attorney series, Nintendo games (in general), Dark Souls, No More Heroes, RPGs (in general), and so on. I know how weird some of those sound (like No More Heroes), but I made it work.
Question: The opening isn't syncing to the music! Is that a glitch?
Answer: Yeah, but there's nothing I can do about it. I did my best to make the opening sync to the music, but apparently I pushed RPG Maker to its limit or something, because sometimes the sync is about a second off. There's nothing I can really do about that. It's the program, not me. Lord knows I spent enough time trying to perfectly sync that thing up to figure that out. With any luck it should be pretty well synced for you if you restart the game and really want to see the opening perfectly synced that badly.
Question: Is there controller support?
Answer: I think so. RPG Maker VX Ace games should have controller support. Don't ask me how it works, though. I think it automatically detects your controller.
Question: Will Destructoid Story run on my computer?
Answer: If your computer isn't a dinosaur, you should be okay. Here's a little graphic from the Rpg Maker website that might help.
