Luckily, the gameplay more than made up for it. It has such a casual gaming feel to it. I mean that in a good way. Not too hard of a game. Pleasantly colorful, pleasantly stylized, pleasantly playable. A game world with lore that felt like it had potential. Talking to and dealing with demons instead of humans was a welcome and exciting change. And the point in the game where - trying not to ruin it for anyone - "traveling is made easier" felt awesome and right as hell. The weapon/skill upgrading was also key in keeping me interested throughout the length of the game.
Darksiders was just a feel good game for me. A good game for when you're not in the mood to take games too seriously. A game for when you just want to kick back and kill some time instead of brain cells. Oddly enough, it's the only game in my collection with that role.
And to think I almost didn't buy Darksiders on principle alone when I heard that it "ripped off" other games (hats off to Jim for changing my mind through his review). It took some things, yeah, but the game absolutely uses those things in its OWN way, and it manages to have integrity despite having sticky fingers, however that is possible.
I feel like buying Darksiders 2 on day one to show Vigil my support. I'll buy it either way, though. For the casual gamer in me.
