Check out Balrog's new Street Fighter HD crib photo

Once again, Capcom continues to tease us with in-game art for the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. The game (which is looking to be incredible) is set to hit the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade sometime in the near future, but we don't know when.

In the meantime, producer Rey Jimenez has revealed the first in-game background artwork image (not a screenshot) on the official Capcom blogs. Long time fans will recognize Balrog's stage, and will likely notice that some changes have been made. Some elements of the stage have been update (cars, characters), and the name of the casino has been changed as well.

"As you know," says Jiminez, "it used to be call the Golden Nugger. But as that is a real casino, I renamed it Crazy Buffalo in honor of one of Balrog's moves."

Wimps -- what's a law suit when it comes to authentic updates of classics? Jimenez also talks about an optional new mode which he's calling "re-balanced mode," but doesn't go into any more details. Despite that, he's asking readers to think of a more creative name for the new mode. Head over to Capcom's blog to toss your suggestions into the hat. Mine? "Also, cocks-mode."

[Thanks, SLiFE!]

And next thing you know, Native Americans will be claiming that's racist and perpetuates that all indians are insane and own casinos.

I can't wait for this, I've been playing Capcom VS SNK allot recently due to the fact that an arcade machine containing it has been put in my local independent game shop and i know for a fact that when i go to play Super Street Fighter Turbo HD Remix I'll be too used to using the arcade stick and I'll totally suck at it.

When is Super Puzzle Fighter and Sensible Soccer coming out on XBLA?

Capcom's blog for this game is great-- I love how they update with the works-in-progress. And they genuinely seem to want to listen to the fans.

But I agree with Spacemonkey-- seeing the new art for the fighters in motion is what's going to sell it 4realz.

Also-cocks mode.. lol

How are we supposed to name the mode, if we don't know what it's for?!

People..you realize the game will play and animate exactly like the original...there will be no update other then skin deep.

Let me repeat...no new animation (yes this hurts) and no new gameplay (this is good).

I think "The Man in the Yellow Hat" of Curious George fame has hit on some hard times, betting on fights at the Crazy Buffalo.

And, also, no widescreen support. Capcom doesn't want to modify the gameplay, so Chun-Li's and Vega's wall jumps prevent the game from going 16:9.

I'd rather see SF4 treated like this. The original game has serious sentimental value for me in its original form.

The palm tree on the left looks awesome, and the car looks pretty good.. but the rest of it is just bleh. They need to stay true to the original BG, like they're trying to do with the characters.

Wow that's fucking ugly. Like bad Deviantart Photoshop fan-art ugly.

And it's so bright and contrasty.. the sprite visibility is going to be nasty.

Do not want.

It looks like shit, Capcom artists are not responsible for these visuals, which is why these images look like any generic mid 90's saturday morning cartoon, "Street Sharks" springs to mind.

If that image was just released as a visual and no one told you it was for a game, most people would say it looks like shit, but as always, because it's a game the visuals get special allowances and treatement, people essentially forgive bad design because it's a game visual.

Just look at the people in this screenshot, the artist responsible can't fucking draw, they actually can't draw, it's a joke. If you're a Street Fighter fan then you must surely know that the visulas of SF3 were absolutely amazing, that's because they were handled by Capcom. This though is like fan art, bad fan art.

When they first announced this, I was all excited about the possibility of a 3rd Strike remake. If they remade 3rd Strike and it looked like this, I swear I'd throw a brick through the window at Capcom USA or something.

I think "re-balanced" mode is an AI adjustment or something. I remember reading in one of the earlier blogs they mentioned that the AI in SSF2 Turbo was notoriously hard and they were thinking about adjusting it. Maybe with this mode they can have the original AI + a mode with adjusted AI.

Also here are some pics I stole from another forum:

A comparison of the old and new backgrounds.

A decent mock up of what the final product will probably look like.

Personally, I can't wait for this game.

Sorry, it looks like an episode of Gi Joe, remember when Street Fighter first hit the US? Remember those awful illustartions they used for the western market before the days of anime/manga being popular? Well, this game looks like those illustrations. You can buy a book featuring the work of Capcom's artists on various projects, I highly recommend it, and without doubt the Megaman and Street Fighter artwork stands out as exceptional. This on the other hand stands out for it's horrible mid 90's style, with the trademark messy surface detail to try and hide the lack of actual drawing ability. It's Horrible, even the colours are lurid.

Gotta love those extra knuckles on Ken's thumb, though.

Though I agree that the background is a little off putting (it kind of looks like a bunch of seperate pictures photoshopped together), I've loved all of the character art so far. Keep in mind that everything we've seen so far is still more or less a work in progress.

They're not works in progress. When there's been a huge community backlash against certain things (like the god-awful Guile sprites), they've gone back to change them. But Ken will definitely have an extra knuckle/joint, T-Hawk will be hideously deformed, and all of the characters will have crap anatomy.

Whenever I see mockups of the new background and sprites, it just makes everything look worse. The BG artists have no idea what they're doing.. giant bright white areas, really horrible Photoshop tricks to make up for a lack of talent, inconsistent levels of detail, ugh. I'm not even going to get into the crap effort they put into all the signage in the background.. who drew the sign for the Crazy Buffalo, a 5th-grader?

God this game is going to suck. And that's coming from someone who loves SF so much that I have a SF cabinet in my living room.

Guile's always been a pretty fucked up sprite, going back to SF2. But if you take the original frames and line them up, they clearly modify his anatomy in ways that don't make sense. I'm sort of dreading how Blanka and Chun-Li will look.

I think the artist needs to learn about proportion. Not only is the guy on the left is smaller than the limo, the proportion of his body is totally off. Then just to make things worse, the girl next to him is smaller again! (although her proportions are ok).

*shakes finger at artists*

@Bethla

I'll agree that Guile's anatomy was a little fucked and Ken's extra thumb joint is weird, but other than that, they look good to me. I don't see anything wrong with T-Hawk either. I know they had to do things a little differently than they wanted to to fit the original sprite boxes but other than what I mentioned I don't see why you think they're overall bad unless you're just not a fan of the new art style (which I am a fan of).

The background does look weird though like I said, but I'll wait until I see all of this together as it's intended before I say it sucks.

THAT IS RACIST.

(seriously, though, i can't understand some of you geeks and your obsession with anatomy.)

The art redux totally matters towards how it will play. The original game, those sprites were created for extremely specific purposes in gameplay. Also the resolution available at the time had alot to do with how things were animated. The new art at such a higher resolution is just a replacement, a backwards overlay. I'm wary of how the game will look AS it plays, even if it plays "exactly the same."
