Once again, Capcom continues to tease us with in-game art for the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. The game (which is looking to be incredible) is set to hit the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade sometime in the near future, but we don't know when.
In the meantime, producer Rey Jimenez has revealed the first in-game background artwork image (not a screenshot) on the official Capcom blogs. Long time fans will recognize Balrog's stage, and will likely notice that some changes have been made. Some elements of the stage have been update (cars, characters), and the name of the casino has been changed as well.
"As you know," says Jiminez, "it used to be call the Golden Nugger. But as that is a real casino, I renamed it Crazy Buffalo in honor of one of Balrog's moves."
Wimps -- what's a law suit when it comes to authentic updates of classics? Jimenez also talks about an optional new mode which he's calling "re-balanced mode," but doesn't go into any more details. Despite that, he's asking readers to think of a more creative name for the new mode. Head over to Capcom's blog to toss your suggestions into the hat. Mine? "Also, cocks-mode."
[Thanks, SLiFE!]
Enough with the teasing! I want to know when I get my grubby paws on this mutha.
When is Super Puzzle Fighter and Sensible Soccer coming out on XBLA?
But I agree with Spacemonkey-- seeing the new art for the fighters in motion is what's going to sell it 4realz.
How are we supposed to name the mode, if we don't know what it's for?!
Let me repeat...no new animation (yes this hurts) and no new gameplay (this is good).
I'd rather see SF4 treated like this. The original game has serious sentimental value for me in its original form.
And it's so bright and contrasty.. the sprite visibility is going to be nasty.
Do not want.
If that image was just released as a visual and no one told you it was for a game, most people would say it looks like shit, but as always, because it's a game the visuals get special allowances and treatement, people essentially forgive bad design because it's a game visual.
Just look at the people in this screenshot, the artist responsible can't fucking draw, they actually can't draw, it's a joke. If you're a Street Fighter fan then you must surely know that the visulas of SF3 were absolutely amazing, that's because they were handled by Capcom. This though is like fan art, bad fan art.
When they first announced this, I was all excited about the possibility of a 3rd Strike remake. If they remade 3rd Strike and it looked like this, I swear I'd throw a brick through the window at Capcom USA or something.
Also here are some pics I stole from another forum:
A comparison of the old and new backgrounds.
A decent mock up of what the final product will probably look like.
Personally, I can't wait for this game.
Though I agree that the background is a little off putting (it kind of looks like a bunch of seperate pictures photoshopped together), I've loved all of the character art so far. Keep in mind that everything we've seen so far is still more or less a work in progress.
@zardoz: I think it looks jawsome!
They're not works in progress. When there's been a huge community backlash against certain things (like the god-awful Guile sprites), they've gone back to change them. But Ken will definitely have an extra knuckle/joint, T-Hawk will be hideously deformed, and all of the characters will have crap anatomy.
Whenever I see mockups of the new background and sprites, it just makes everything look worse. The BG artists have no idea what they're doing.. giant bright white areas, really horrible Photoshop tricks to make up for a lack of talent, inconsistent levels of detail, ugh. I'm not even going to get into the crap effort they put into all the signage in the background.. who drew the sign for the Crazy Buffalo, a 5th-grader?
God this game is going to suck. And that's coming from someone who loves SF so much that I have a SF cabinet in my living room.
*shakes finger at artists*

I'll agree that Guile's anatomy was a little fucked and Ken's extra thumb joint is weird, but other than that, they look good to me. I don't see anything wrong with T-Hawk either. I know they had to do things a little differently than they wanted to to fit the original sprite boxes but other than what I mentioned I don't see why you think they're overall bad unless you're just not a fan of the new art style (which I am a fan of).
The background does look weird though like I said, but I'll wait until I see all of this together as it's intended before I say it sucks.
THAT IS RACIST.
(seriously, though, i can't understand some of you geeks and your obsession with anatomy.)
