Chavez: The PlayStation is 'poison' photo

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez doesn't like videogames. In fact, the controversial political figure hates them, having named the PlayStation a "poison" that lead Venezuelan children down the "road to Hell" with its evil Capitalist ways. Oh, that wacky Chavez!

"Those games they call 'PlayStation' are poison," states Chavez on his weekly radio-TV show. "Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, 'you've got to find Chavez to kill him.'"

According to Chavez, any videogame that lets players "bomb cities or just throw bombs" has been created by evil Capitalists who design them for the sole purpose of selling real-life weapons at a later date. He also states that videogames, "Promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol so they can sell them. That's capitalism, the road to hell."

Chavez of course has a personal grievance with videogames after Mercenaries 2 painted Venezuela in a bad light. You'd think a man with the kind of power that Chavez has could take a little criticism and not be such a little bitch, but apparently not, and that is why Sony sells cigarettes and weapons to little Venezuelan kids.

We shall destroy socialism by enslaving the public with video games and getting them hooked on it. Horray for capitalism!

I guess having certain opinions about how the country you represent makes you a little bitch. World class copy and paste-ism with a side of unwarranted hostility towards others. Glad i turned on the old D-toid before bedtime this morning. Good night bigots. Or is there just one of you? Oh well, we shall see when i open this link again in the afternoon upon waking.

Unwarranted? You did read what Chavez said, didn't you? He basically made shit up about Sony selling cigarettes to kids because he's bitter about mercenaries 2. That's what makes him a little bitch

Sorry, didn't realize Huge Chavez had such a loyal fanbase on Destructoid. Carry on defending the man's stupid and bullshit opinion though.

I don't think that is a response to Mercenaries 2. More like the videogames sent as the ussual scapegoat for violence... Only this time its not from a man open to debate, but from someone that rewrites his country's laws every morning.

And no, Jim. You shouldn't expect Chavez to handle criticism in any way. The man is so volatile and insecure as a 14 years old teenager.

Last time I checked there were no reported cases of gamers bombing cities, that's what governments do, asshole.

Well, video games (or at least big budget ones) could only exist in a very capitalistic society. Then there's a lot of violence in video games. Fact is most well known games tend to be pretty violent, so if his perception of games is one of a medium indoctrinating the youth into a violent culture than I dunno, not really his fault for perceiving them that way. And there is a certain truth in video games being used for advertisement, or being violent to extremes, and sometimes being xenophobic.

I disagree with him, but I wouldn't call him a little bitch. That's what Jim's for.

I don't understand how any self respecting "gamer" could be upset with Jim for writing this post. He doesn't even launch into any large-scale rants, just calls Chavez a bitch, which he deserves to be called.

I mean, he's reporting the news and giving his opinion. While I know some "reporters and journalists" might refrain from calling him an asshole, I appreciate that my writer of choice gets to tell it like it is, not like the sponsors and advertisers say it is.

I read this story in Spanish, not only does he say get rid of video games, but what he says afterward is hilarious. He goes on to say that kids should be playing with yo yo's and tops, lol! The man's living in the 30's!

What's next? Get rid of your refrigerators and start using ice? Still though, the Venezuelan people put him in power. They have no one to blame but themselves.

I agree in part, that Capitalism is leading our children down "the road to hell" a hell where everyone is striving to acheive the unacheivable, a hell where everyone must whore themselves out to the highest bidder just to put food on the table and a roof over their heads, a hell where it's simply not enough to provide for your family, where you must spend your entire life trying to be "more" than your neighbour, bigger house, bigger car, more money, where the top few travel in the luxury liner while the rest of us whittle away our lives trying to kick each other out of the little boat.

But dude, that's a hell that most of the world is already in, and it's got fuck all to do with videogames.

As much as i love video games, all they are is a distraction from what's really going on around us.

We are the slaves, video games, TV, sports, fake news stories and over hyped celebrities are all the smoke screen used to keep us ignorant, to keep our little brains busy, to distract us from our enslavement.

But yeah, to blame Video games for capitalism is fucking ridicutarded, you should be taking your argument to American economic imperialisation, not to a form of entertainment.

As Winston Churchill once said capitalism is only the lesser of two evils.

The fact is the failure of a capitalist society is completely on the fault of the people. That's the point of capitalism. The people are the ones in charge. If the people want something to change they get off their asses and get shit done. And if they don't they'll stagnate.

Capitalism is anything from perfect butwe've tried the other ways too and they're oppressive and/or dangerous. A socialist agenda can exist in a small are no problem. And I know here in the states we're not even fully capitalist anymore. We're sociocapitalist. So obviously there needs to be some level of socialiasm. But a complete dictatorship for an entire country is just a bad idea. It's open and shut.

I like the idea of socialism. The concept of socialism is the shit. And have you seen Sweden? Awesome. But the execution is what fucks everybody over. It's extremely delicate to the point of being nearly impossible to implement.

Hugo Chavez has turned Venezuela into nothing but an oil supermarket. He's fucked with the people's ability to eat, sleep, or find help all in the name of being as big as the US. It's pathetic. He needs to focus on his country and his people. He can do the whole oil thing all he wants but it doesn't give him the right to ignore his countries blatant need for support.

Socialism is a grea idea. Especially when faced with the cynical perspective of capitalism. But the fact is it doesn't work.

And I do mean cynical perspective. I can understand and see where people come from when they bitch about the capitalist society but it really isn't that bad at all. It's not perfect but it certainly isn't hell.
