this video seems way more relevant with all the shit that got stirred up earlier today with the new dmc. i think as long as gameplay is expanded upon the devs can take different approaches to how they present the game, ie: 3d, 2d, top down. Especially now when presentation-wise the sky is almost the limit given hardware capabilities.
Ah yes but I think its a little early to lump DMC in with Other M. We still don't have any gameplay details. Might just be a cosmetic reinvention for the most part.
The Metroid Prime franchise for example, there are three games with the same fundamental gameplay but feel completely different because of the design and presentational elements unique to each game. They are all awesome games in their own way.
Something like Other is a complete sidestep for the Metroid series and snuffs most of its conventions, and turns out it wasn't at all good enough and not what we wanted.
Don't make revamps unless you want to put a form of gameplay in a different universe, people don't want to see their memories messed with. Revamps work best for old and forgotten games, where there is nobody to annoy.
@Kraid Nice catch! Nothing like a little "Take Five" action in the background to get the ol' gamer talk started.
@Brian Szabelski It's ok. I miss him too man.
@Dr-Peace First off, hooray for your No More Heroes reference. I agree with your sentiment in rgards to the Metroid Prime games, but I still feel that it's not a ba thing to throw us gamers a gameplay curveball every now and then. Natural progression is a nice way to warm gamers up to gameplay changes so as to avoid the "sudden shifts" in gameplay focuses, aesthetics, etc., but I don't think it's a negative thing to take gamers out of their comfort zone if it's in an effort to further the gamepay. Take Street Fighter III for example; it made TONS of sudden changes to the established SF gmeplay, characters, music, etc., and it was crucified upon release here in the states (save for the "hardcore" niche fighing game crowd). Fast forward to 2010, and we now have SF players around the world claiming it's sudden drastic changes in gameplay were a godsend to the franchise (I strongly agree btw). I think every game franchise has it's "Don't touch it! It's sacred!"-followers, but I think it's when the developers are honestly trying to progress a franchises gameplay mechanics, that they shouldn't have to worry so much about stepping on gamer's nostalgia-toes.

and there's a Morrigan cosplayer in there. you can't shit on that.
That reminds me about the newest tomb raider top-down shooter. I would never thought I would ever see another tomb raider game released in THIS form. But I cant wait to play it and I think experimenting with various ideas is a good thing, changing games we all know is good thing tho it not always works the way we would expect them to work.
You know.
