Champions Online pre-launch deals limited, frustrates fans photo

One of the coolest -- and most expensive -- pre-launch MMO deals we’ve seen in a while is the ‘Lifetime' membership offer for Champions Online. As the name implies, the offer allows people to play the game without fees until the MMO croaks. Like members of the Champions community, we believed the deal was good until September 1st. That’s not entirely true and it’s causing a fuss.

According to this official post, the amount of Lifetime membership subscriptions, as well as pre-launch six-month subscriptions is limited and may sell out before the September date. The limited availability was mentioned in the official announcement, but Cryptic didn’t advertise the fact, or at least make it’s nature explicit, over its Champions Web site.

Message board members are voicing their frustrations, while a few are wishing that the Lifetime memberships -- less than 1,000 are left -- will still be available on the day they plan to purchase it. Cryptic issued an apology on the board.

“First, we do sincerely apologize for the rather abrupt end to the promotional offers,” the message reads. “It was never our intention to spring that news on our fans or anyone else. In short, we had an allotment of special subscription packages to sell over a fixed time (ending September 1). When we began approaching the offer cap before the date cap, we had to message. Frankly, we never suspected our special offers to be so popular.”

It’s a bit of a mess and an unfortunate one for those who may miss out on the expensive deal who planned to get into it, say, in the next few days. Moral of the story? Buy now or miss out.

I grabbed the lifetime sub a week or so after it was announced. I figure even if I don't play it for a year straight it will save me having to reactivate the account like I do with CoH every so often. That and if it proves really popular I can always do the american thing and sell it for profit, though I doubt I will unless I like DC mmo better haha.

Wow. A lot of people bought into the lifetime subscription? The beta proved the game still needed a good amount of balancing, I couldn't imagine putting that amount down on a fledgling MMO.

Playing a bit of closed beta, I made a version of the tenth Doctor and gave him Martial Arts as his starting combat style; paying homage to the third Doctor and his Venusian aikido. However, the constant changes to the powers made him become less viable with each patch. (i.e., Not dealing enough damage even though that's how he was setup.) With no real way to completely respec a character, it makes it hard to really test a group of different skills to see if that remedies whatever is lacking. You can remove up to ten(?) of the most recent skill purchases, but you get a lot of options by the time you reach level 15. What happens when someone reaches level 40 and another patch brings more hurt to their build? Granted a lot of powers are still overpowered, but I worry more about those not trying to make cookie-cutter builds to suit the superhero they're trying to create.

Yes yes, the same could be said for most MMOs, yet Champions Online could still uses a great deal of balancing. I suspect they need to get the ball rolling to get the money start rolling into to support their endeavor much like Vanguard had to. Unfortunately, I simply don't have the patience for these things. Maybe in a year's time, it'll be worth jumping in.

Less than 1000 left? I thought they were actually sold out of them at this point. I had thought that they were available until the first, but last week sometime they posted that the offer wasnt going to be available much longer so I went ahead and bought it. It is definitely a risk, and the game has some issues that need to be worked on, but no mmo is ever at its peak when it launches.

I'm glad I didn't go and buy the lifetime sub after they went and fucked up the quest XP gain. Now it's a horrible grind to progress.

Personally I thought the gain was too fast. With an alleged lv cap of 40. I pushed a character to 15 in 2 days, and only explored a fraction of the Desert zone before getting directed back to the main city.

I snatched up a lifetime sub, being a huge fan of CoH for near 4 years, I have faith Cryptic will deliver once again.

Why does the game look like a MMO for the Wii?

I really thought the XP was coming too quickly during my playtime. I hit 13 by the time I fully cleared the initial zones and reached the main desert area. I was fighting mobs 5-8 levels under me at that point. I'm happy it's getting a dip.

Still, I enjoyed it enough to buy one of the lifetime subscriptions. If I'd had that as an option for WoW or CoH, they would have more than paid for themselves by now.

@bunnymud: a lot of screenshots don't do the game justice. It looks a lot better in motion instead of freeze framed. Watch some vids in HD and see if you feel differently. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=champions+online+HD&search_type=&aq=f

I got in on the beta and I can't imagine even spending the $50 for the game, let alone a subscription.

Incidentally... such a storm of rage and disappointment rose up, that the 6 month and lifetime subs were brought back, up until 11:59pm Aug 31st.. with no supply limit on either.
