Champions Online open beta to happen in mid-August photo

If you’ve been unable to get into the Champions Online closed beta and are spectacularly patient about these things, get ready to be excited: according to fan Web site Champions Online News, Cryptic Studios’ superhero MMO will enter open beta in mid-August.

Champions Online News recently visited Cryptic’s offices, chatted with some personnel and learned the target date for the open beta. Unfortunately, the open beta appears to only be for the PC version of the game. Champions Online is slated to hit both the PC and Xbox 360 September 1.

It’ll be interesting to sniff what Cryptic has been cooking for the last few years. Are any of you interested in giving the beta a spin?

I'm interested only in the sense of wondering how on bloody earth Jack plans to balance a game with no predefined archetypes. Since lord knows the second anyone breaks his precious vision with an uber build he'll throw a hissyfit.

I'm passing on this one. Combat just looks too blah.

Really can't wait for this game. Been following it for a little while now and the more I hear about it the better it sounds (and looks). Anywho, just writing in to say that I have confirmed it with a dev (CrypticArkayne on Twitter) that the PC and Console versions will NOT be releasing simultaneously. The PC version will come out first and the console version is as yet unannounced. :(

I'm definitely going for this. CoH/V was awesome and as long as this doesn't suck I can stand losing some time to it

Champions is in a race with SW:TOR. To the victor goes my wallet.

Unoriginal and uninspired. I'll pass.

This lives or dies on whether it makes you feel like a superhero.

I loved the premise of COH/V but when you stripped away the metropolis skin it felt like you were playing any other fantasy MMO.

Same goes for DC:Universe Online.

Been in the closed beta for months and months, and still haven't played. I totally suck.

I'm looking forward to it. I was originally going to spend my summer on it 'cause it was coming out 2 days before mine started, but since they delayed it it won't be coming out until the day I go back to college.

Onlineatron: the problem with that is to feel like a "real superhero" you're going to find it very hard very fast to stay even slightly plausible when you're out crimefighting to have credible threats. If everyone is superman, then any lower tier villains are boned out of the gate.
