Champions Online now cheaper photo

If the middling reviews have kept you from diving into Champions Online, know now that can be obtained on the cheap. Several retailers -- including Steam, Direct2Drive, Amazon, and GameStop -- are pricing the superhero MMO at $40 or under instead of the usual 50 bones. That’s like, at least, a 10-dollar savings folks!

Of course, that’s not the only cost -- Champions is one of those old-school MMOs that carries a subscription fee. No worries on that end, though. Cryptic offers new people the pleasure of playing the game for a limited time without having to dish out cash.

If the new price of Champions sounds about right for the content-- we have a review, you know -- feel free to jump on this deal. And, hey, make a Brad Nicholson while you’re at it. The digital plains of the MMO can’t ever have too many.

I never understand why developers sell a boxed version of a mmo game only to have subscribers pay a monthly subscription. Wouldn't they attract more customers if they let them download the installer instead? I'm pretty sure customers are more willing to try a mmo game and plunk down 15 bucks a month, then pay 50 bucks for a boxed game AND then pay 15 bucks a month.

10 dollars off means nothing, as far as a reason to jump into a game like this.....

it requires a monthly subscription, so whether or not you pay 40 or 50 dollars upfront, if you dont subscribe you are buying a game for a few weeks, for 40-50 dollars...

look at the way cellphone plans work, they give you 100's of dollars off to get you to subscribe, i highly doubt an ultra-measily 10 dollars off is going to convince anyone who didnt want this game orginally, that they now do..

if this was a non subscription based game, this would just be another run of the mill 10 dollar off sale that really isnt even close to news worthy, but the fact that it is subscription based makes it absolutely not news worthy and far from what anyone should consider a deal.

sorry for the double post here: but chronic logic.. most subscription fees are to cover the cost of the servers, and the cost of the game ussually covers the cost of development.

i personally would much rather pay a monthly subscription for a game that cost 50 dollars and took a long time to develop then pay a monthly subscription for a free game that really isnt much at all.

example: (and yes im refrencing cell phones again) i could buy a 20 dollar cellphone for my 65 dollar a month plan, but if im paying 65 dollars a month anyhow, id rather spend a few hundred on my phone and have a much fuller experience. why? besides the obvious.. if you look at the long run 24 months @ 65 dollars = 1560 dollars, plus 200 for a new phone, ='s 1760, but with a crappy phone it would still cost me 1580 over 2 years, so for the diffrence of 1/10th of the total cost i could be having a much more richer experience

and as far as video games, most free then subscribe games, are pretty bad, often have micro purchasing required, and you never know when they are going to go under..

I'm with Deadaim... this $10 is paltry considering the actual investment you have to make. Not to mention the game just isn't that great, but that's a whole other subject on its own.

I went for a lifetime sub when it was available. I'm in for $250 total.

oh my gosh champions online did the lifetime sub option also?

the last time i saw one of those was hellgate london, and it was hilarious.

a lifetime sub is about the worse idea a company could propose, and about the dumbest thing a consumer could do.

1. why pay for that much time ahead of time, you have no idea if you will like the game.. even if you played the beta the full game will always be diffrent especially at the top levels.

2. the company already has your money, so theres no reason for them to keep you happy.

3. wouldnt you rather the freedom of saying "hey i dont like this game, you know what im done".. honestly if i was in month 1 thru 6 of a 200 dollar lifetime subscription theres no way id stop playing no matter how bad the game was, id be convincing myself that i liked the game.

4. wow this is random but im bringing up cellphones again, providers offer hundreds to get you in a long term contract, yet a lifetime subscription offers nothing except to say if you devote 2 years or more of your life you might start to get something out of it.

anyhow.. this all came to a hilarious end for the hellgate lifetimers, besides the fact the game was awful and many who spent months claiming the lifetime subscription was the coolest thing ever, were begging for their money back. not only did they not get their money back, the game closed for good a while back.

so much for lifetime subscription huh?

@Deadaim: the funnier part?

Champions is helmed by Bill Roper. The same guy who made Hellgate.

@deadaim,

and yet.. those that took a chance with a lifetime sub on LOTRO are reaping the rewards now, and the game is still going strong. Really comes down to the faith the customer has in the company by making that commitment, and the company acknowledging that commitment.

hat aside, Roper heading up CO does worry me, he's already continually lied about microtransactions in the game, and yet... here we are with the new store options going live a few days ago.

This was apparently a priority for him, in a game that has it's players clamoring for more content because there's not enough to do(lets face it... having to do EVERY mission in the game, then still grind on top of that to make the level cap is a serious problem)

i will never buy another bill roper game.

and while some people might be making out with lotro subscripts.. im still not a fan of a lifetime subscription.

honestly.. the way i look at it to make my money back i have to play the game far more then i should be playing any game.. and in the long run if some how i do get warped into a game where as im playing it for 3-4 years, paying the monthly subscript would be worth it to me because im clearly enjoying the game.

but really lets just face it, bill roper single handidly has cast a shadow on the entire payment scheme and its just to hard to trust any developer with that much of my money, and additionally giving them no reason to keep me happy

I don't think I'll buy it because I know I will get roped into it and disappear if I buy it. Oh, and the monthly fee thing blows too.
