Other then, of course, the game not being any fun.
LOTRO and D&DO are doing just fine on free to play without these stupid limitations, with this terrible model, they won't get the typical MMO players that don't want to mix with the free to play peasant, and they definitively won't get the third world MMO crowd by taking out all the roleplay out of a RPG.
Eh? no you don't get to choose your skills (but select from Pre-Builds). Considering were allowed to play though to the level cap and most of the quests for free. Thats not bloody bad at all.
Remember this was a 10 to 15/month game. Same with LOTRO and DnD: Unlimited.

That's why it's a good thing you can try the game before deciding to commit any money to it. The game may or may not suck (still downloading it here) but you can't fault their business model.

I randomly bought DC Universe: Online for PS3 because I wanted to take a break from WoW and while nothing will ever beat WoW, DCU:O plays more like City of Heroes than Champions did. I know that was a major factor in why Champions sucked for me, too little too late to go free IMO.
What kind of insane logic are you working on?
"LOTRO and D&DO are doing just fine on free to play without these stupid limitations.."
Erm..Yeah, LOTRO and DDO are doing fine but your also wrong. LOTRO and D&DO have limitations -about just as many, if not more, then Champions.. Actually both have an even more stifling 3 tiered F2P/Premium/ VIP system instead of Champions 2 tier one.
LOTRO: You can only be on 2 servers and have to purchase access to more if you want it.. Limited to inventory bags unless you purchase more.. 2g-5g gold limit depending on your package- Unlimited only if you go VIP.. Login priority is handled based on your pay tier.. 2 character slots for F2P, increasing if you pay.. Mail, Auction House, Chat and rest xp are all limited unless you go VIP (the latter being non-existent in all cases up to VIP).. Limited to only 4 skirmishes (their PvP) Unless you go for VIP status where it jumps to 9.. Community features are limited in F2P.. Customer service is self service online, 30 days for a turbine point purchase or full service depending on your pay tier.
Also, LOTRO requires you to purchase its expansions if you wish to get more out of the game at all (additional classes, increased level cap, more zones ect).
DDO: Somewhat the same as LOTRO but a much smaller list with more "EARN FOR FREE OR PURCHASE" Options and small tweaks to things the game limits like how long the game lets you idle based on your paygrade.
Champions limitations actually seem really tame in comparison, but that might just be because the scope of the game is largely limited in the first place.
This doesn't mean Champions is even a good game (Its ok, nothing to really write home about -I played it for a while back at launch) and certainly doesn't make it better the the other two, but if your going to argue something at least know what your talking about..
I also don't really get what you mean when you say they're taking the "Roleplay out of RPG". Is this a crack against the limited archetypes or... what? Because yeah, they may have limited the archetypes and watered down the skill sets, but its no different to a game like DCU that has a much more limited amount of archetypes and powersets to begin with. If anything this actually helps balance Champions WAAAY more then the game has ever been -because when you free for all your archetype and powers the game becomes a complete mess in just about all aspects (IE. the game favors fliers who can shoot things, back in my time it was skewed more towards fire).
So yeah.. Don't really get the comment/argument and so far my only real problem with the game is that I started the download around 4pm yesterday and its not even 20% complete after dramatically throttling my PC.
I've been in MMO beta's from Aion to Zion and I have learned, in all that time, what reeks of Lineage spunk and what is the next WoW for me.
