Champions Online dropped by Take-Two photo

In an investor conference over the weekend, it was revealed that Champions Online, the upcoming superhero MMO, will no longer be published by Take-Two Interactive. The reason given was the recent acquisition of developer Cryptic Studios by Atari. There's no word yet from Atari on whether they will be publishing the title but it sounds as if we'll be hearing something to that effect in the very near future.

As a long-time fan of the Champions pen-and-paper RPG, I'm interested to see what the end result of this project winds up being. From the looks of it, Cryptic is going in a much more action-oriented direction than they did with City of Heroes and that's probably the right thing to do for an MMO that's going to attempt success on the 360. I'm just praying that another classic RPG setting isn't mangled the way Shadowrun was.

Never played the game, but it sucks for those that did. Maybe the can sell it off to someone who digs MMOs more.

Sign of the times a changing.

Yeesh. I wish people didn't freak out about MMOs like they seem to. Just work on a good game and put it out as its own thing, with a healthy ad campaign.

Not that healthy ad campaigns are cheap. But I'm just sure everyone sees "MMO", thinks they have to compete with WoW, and just flip out when they don't think their product is the second coming. It just doesn't have to be, if the game is solid and you can get some people to buy into the ideal.

And this one's easy: What type of super hero would you be? Come find out and play with or against other heroes in a massive open world! Who Would Win? Come find out, etc.

Huh, and I was just about to look up that game and see what progress they've made.

Another less-than-encouraging development for the game that would be CoH2 in effect.

I'm in the beta at the moment (which I'm not supposed to talk about but ....whatever). It's pretty rough at the moment but definitely shows promise.

One thing though: You ARE going to want to play this with a controller.

I think this game looks badass. It's the first MMO I actually look forward to playing.

I sure hope this comes out and is as cool as it looks to be.
