Champions Online delayed, Mr. Undelayable unable to stop it photo

Champions Online, Crytpic’s superhero MMO for consoles and PC, has been pushed back to September 1 according to a posting on the game’s official Web site. The game was originally slated to hit store shelves July 14.

The reason for the delay seems to be the usual: the studio needs more time to implement features in order to make sure that launch doesn’t suck.

“It is critically important for an MMO to be as good as it possibly can be at launch,” Bill Roper, design director and executive producer, told fans. “Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time.”

As many an MMO player will tell you, launch is usually an awkward time that can make or break the experience for many gamers. Cryptic’s just making sure they can nail it. And let’s hope they do. We’ve been looking to rock out in Champions for a long time now.

I've been part of several MMO launches. I can honestly say that there has never been a smooth launch in the history of MMOs. Or at least in the bunch that I've seen.

The idea of an MMO being "as good as it can possibly be" at launch is ridiculous. If that's what they're shooting for, does that mean no additional content, no patches, no nothing after launch? Of course not. They will continue to improve the game for years, which necessarily implies that it wasn't as good as it could possibly be at launch.

@Dexter

But they could mean that its "as good as it could possibly be at launch" instead of "at launch, the game will be as good as it could possibly ever be." Its all sea-man-ticks.

Champions is boasting alot of ideas and mechanics that would set itself apart from even it's predecessor, City of Heroes. For them to launch, without the key features the game is showcasing (the nemesis system, complete open power selections and character creation..) would be disasterous for the company.

Do they already have beta testers for the game to iron out bugs and other flaws?

Yes. But the big thing I keep hearing is that they want it to be classless like CoH was originally gonna be. which means huge honking balance issues all over the place. Plus I'd bet the Going Rogue expansion from the CoH Camp has probably made cryptic realize anything short of perfection at launch might be a bad marketing plan.
