With rumors about the next game consoles intensifying over these past months, it feels like 2012 might finally be the year when Microsoft and Sony let the details slip. But not everyone is so optimistic, and in the case of Sony, nothing is in the pipeline for E3.
During this week's Consumer Electronics Show, Sony's Kaz Hirai responded to a roundtable question regarding whether or not they would announce the successor to the PlayStation 3 during June's trade show.
"Andy [House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment] is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3. I've always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."
Your first response might be "Well, of course he'd say that!" And you're probably right. But given that this will be the PlayStation Vita's first post-release E3 -- and a bunch of other factors -- I can see strategic reasons behind why Sony wouldn't want to make an announcement yet.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
(plus they need to pull out a new bait format gimmick like they did with the DVD on PS2 and BluRay on PS3)
To many cinemas and QTE's in most console games these days. Dark Souls and Space Marine were the only console games that I played last year that felt like they were not trying to be movies.
I own both of the systems, btw.
how is it overdue? this generation of games has aged very well for me and I can easily see it last another 3 years.
I really do agree with Ace829
....oh wait, they'll do it at TGS -___-
Because that worked with the ps3?
I have at least two years worth of games I still need time to play on my PS3 before I could consider getting a PS4 anyway.
that means being able to create multiple accounts(unlike vita where you delete everything before using another account) PS3 BC, Region Free(please please don't fuck this up) also being able to create accounts on any region, improve XMB and pretty much everything you had ope for(new graphics card, ram and such) bring back the triggers from PS2(PS3 controller is perfect but the triggers are iffy, at least the PDP Dual Triggers removes this problem 100%)
new features i would want(heck they could even put some of these on PS3 right now)
region free BD drive(technically it is since the US and JPN movies are in the same region code) but it would be better for everyone to truly play any movies in any country at any time. faster BD speed(definitely can lessen the load times) FLAC and MKV supported files(do not know why sony won't even bother putting this in)
that's pretty much it for now
LOL same2 :P
actually been playing digital devil saga and recently finished Shinobi and Persona 3 FES(The Answer included).
do not know why people want new things. heck in my current backlog i could pretty much lasted around 5 years without buying anything.
Its what Nintendo should have done last year, but sadly 3DS was a slow started and they rushed a half-hearted Wii U unveiling when they should have waited.
Either way, next gen can wait. This gen didn't truly hit its stride til last year. I know developers want their new shiny hardware, but they should learn to make the best use of what we have now first before moving on. In that regard, there are plenty of developers with room left to grow.
^ THIS.
PS2 and DS seems to be the greatest portable and console gaming combination of all time. I still have hundreds of games to get for both.
I just started considering purchasing some MegaTen games (Nocturne, DS 1 & 2 and DDS 1 & 2 for PS2, Strange Journey for DS). I won't need even a PS3, 3DS or new gaming system past those for a long long time.
Echoing what a lot of others have already stated, the consoles have aged remarkably well and this is coming from a guy who plays mostly PC games. The innovative/graphical/etc jump from generation to generation has narrowed with each new transition to the next generation. Sony and Microsoft should not feel in a hurry to divide their resources into a new console.
I say Sony should stick with Vita and make sure it gets a lot of good games.
Not for me
But for the companies
development costs are already through the roof, companies cant make profit, they cant do original games, give it time
Never understood this. In terms of game develepment, I can't see costs skyrocketing at all. 9 out of 10 games are on the pc too at a much higher resolution, DX11 support, better textures and just higher quality overall.
I wouldn't expect the next gen hardware to go past the high end gaming pcs right now either.
It depends. They might try to go past it which is theoretically possible.
If they stick with bluray sized disks, thats fine, if they move to the holographic blurays, all bets are off
Storage aint really an issue tbh. We're going into a digital age where optical is going out the door. Consoles will have them, but it won't be anything important tbh.
My guess is that at least MS will have their digital store selling console titles at release. Digital distribution is the future and these machines will be around for at least 5-6 years.
Most likely installation will be the norm for retail copies.
Anyway, not sure how this largely connects or effects development cost of games. Or relates to my post overall.
"development costs are already through the roof, companies cant make profit, they cant do original games"
What was any different last gen exactly?
Last gen Games rarely had 100 million $ budgets. Or more like never.
You know, awesome graphics and voiceacting troughout cost a lot of money.
Oh, and 10 year lifespan probably means they'll support the system for 10 years, look at how they supported the PS2 well after the PS3's release. Unlike Microsoft and Nintendo, they dont murder previous gen support after the new model is out.
