Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai has stated that the PlayStation Vita's sold over 500,000 units to date. Unusually for a Sony man, he did not hide behind "shipped" figures this time, instead using actual sales.
The Vita launched on December 17 in Japan, where it didn't enjoy the fastest of starts. Nevertheless, we're yet to see how it fares in North America and Europe, and there's every chance of the system gaining ground over time.
North America will get hold of the Vita on February 22. The Wi-Fi version will cost $250 while the 3G alternative costs $300, plus AT&T data charges.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I have mine paid off along with a couple games and the starter kit. Im super stoked. I actually enjoyed the original PSP and this one improves of all negative aspects of the original.
My only complaint thus far is I think it would be cool if the Vita used Android 4.0 as an OS. That would be pretty awesome. It would have a huge collection of games and apps right out the gate.
Even more so if they get a CoD title on there with multiplayer. My God, that thing would sell like crazy.

Its not even out yet and there are already 4 games I want for this thing.
Obviously
DOOMED 64
logic broken
Anyways.....500,000 is a slow start? Didn't it just come out two, maybe three weeks ago? That's not too bad.
A few years ago that'd put it at the halfway point to the first big price drop. The old million sellers list. Miss those days I does.
Ah well. I'm getting my Future Shop case, card, and Little Deviants bundle for $299, and I get it a week before it hits shelves. I AM HORNY!!!!
I know I know, it's not the American dream model of "rush it out make massive cash as fast as possible" but people "get it" right?
They release good, solid, well designed products generally at a high price point and slowly and steadily creap across the market over a long period of time.
Sure, it's not the FAST CASH system we Westerners expect, but it does seem to work for them.
I mean PS3 sales are on track for their 10 year plan despite it being bashed for not selling a bajillion units on day one.
Maaaan i thought people would get it by now.
Actually these days Sony releases things incomplete, takes features away while still charging a high price like they have no competition when they totally do.
I thought you would have noticed by now.
"Take features away" = remove something not many people used.
Boo hoo
if not many people used features, then what was the point of removing them? were they just so unused that they became dangerous to your system or your personal well being? no?
oh, then what was your point again?
I thought people just ignore the silent protagonist and his hateful delusions, he thinks people actually care. By this point he sounds like a broken record.
@tekbunny
I'd rather them take away features that no one gives a shit about to keep the cost as low as possible. I'm not buying vita for its fucking media functionality but for its games. And besides the only thing I can think of would be internal memory and memory cards, but that's not even something new and has been happening in the gaming industry for years.

"I'd rather them take away features that no one gives a shit about to keep the cost as low as possible."
It's one thing to remove features from the spec on new hardware revisions. It's another to remove features from systems already at homes. Whether you used them or not, you already paid for those features and are not getting any refunds.
Refund on what exactly? Hmm... Let's see if I can understand your point. I buy gaming consoles to play games, not to use as a computer, nor to emulate or hack. Unless I'm mistaken the ps3 still does what it was intended to do when I bought it, plays games! So yeah you guessed it I don't see your point and nor do I understand why you'd or silent protagonist get so butt hurt over something that plays games. Lol at acting like a machine has a higher purpose, entitled assholes.
The PS2 was one of the greatest systems ever and PS3 and Vita had the potential to be better than thier predecessors, but Sony's company-wide obsession with anti piracy measures and proprietary junk has taken them down several notches.
Just because you can't discern criticism from hate doesn't mean it's all hate.
Oh damn!!! They don't seem to have that deal out my way. They're advertising Little Deviants too. If they had an Uncharted bundle here I'd shank the customer service staff at Future Shop, take my money back, and run it to Best Buy in a heart beat.
Logic?
"'Take features away' = remove something not many people used."
Having never owned a PS2 (until recently), I would have loved to have backwards compatability still in there when I bought my PS3...
This is a sore spot for me too. Everything was just dandy until my 60 gig died. Now I have a PS3 and a PS2 hooked up like an asshole.
Why have six when you can have half a dozen!?
The reason for this is simple, much like the blogger here. Because Japan is the ONLY region that actually HAS sales figures and the system has currently only been sold in Japan. Europe and North America "sales" are speculative and missing out on several very large actual sales figures like, say, Walmart. So when Nintendo sales worldwide sales, they are bullshitting you, they don't know. Neither does NPD. Shipped is the best estimate because, well, why would Walmart order 2 million PS3s if they're languishing on shelves.
Of course all of this relies on research, knowledge, and a genuine desire to learn about these wonderful figures that companies throw around and, well, if Jim Sterling was interested in ANY of that, the Voldo Cod Piece story from yesterday wouldn't have gone up...
>D
Oh, the PS2, you mean the system that forced you to buy a new multitap despite the fact that it used the exact same controller ports as the PS1? The system that sold memory cards separately while the original Xbox shipped with a built-in HDD? And hell, speaking of HDDs, the system where the slim revision removed the HDD bay and alienated it's respective adopters from playing Final Fantasy 11? Hmm, why on earth would they do that? *cough*PIRACY EXPLOITS*cough*
PS2 = Welfare trash. There I said it. And every single one of it's supposed "killer-apps" will have superior versions elsewhere by the end of the year.
Problem solved
Dont like that answer? Okay, how about this?
As a person who played the shit out of his PS2, I honestly barely ever utilize the backwards compatibility on my PS3 and most of the games I would use it for have been re-released for PS3 already.
