CES: OnLive games will soon be playable through Google TV photo

OnLive is everywhere! First your PC, your TV by way of the MicroConsole and mobile devices like the iPad. Now they're teaming up with Google TV to provide OnLive game services straight to your TV.

As of today, only the OnLive viewer is available through Google TV meaning you can only watch other people play and make use of the social features. It shouldn't be long until you can play full on games though. You'll be able to use the standard Google TV remote controls to play or make use of the OnLive wireless controller too.

I have to say, I'm impressed with how well OnLive has been doing. I laughed at the idea when first revealed, but it looks like OnLive isn't going anywhere but up.

And this isn't the only TV based gaming story I've read in the last few days. It seems only logical, with the move to a mostly digital format being inevitable (probably), and the huge push by console makers to create all in one boxes rather than dedicated gaming machines, that the whole notion of a console will become ridiculous when a TV can be made to do the same things without a separate box.

This is the kind of thing that could bite Sony and Microsoft in the ass. When you base a business model on creating an all in one, with the main differentiation in competitive services being mostly network based, you start yourself down a road that could make your product redundant.

Why would the mainstream gamer need a separate box to play a game when their TV comes equipped with an Intel processor, and can download games directly without any separate equipment? Imagine what Vizio will be doing with this kind of tech in only a few years time.

More and more Onlive is carving out its niche: People who want to gamy without the hardware and have decent internet. These guys are expanding rapidly, and I have to say once my AAS degree is over and done with I will be submitting my resume to them :)

I'm liking the service so far. When I'll get through most of my backlog, I'll get round to resubscribing.

I'm not sure what Stealth is talking about. Ripping people off? Really? I got Deus Ex for 11 bucks and it looks better then the PS3 version. And I can play it with my Keyboard and Mouse or a Controller.

Not sure how people can be so angry about this service. Its a way to play PC games for cheap on a wide variety of hardware platforms.

Add in the service is essentially FREE for anyone to Demo (and you can Demo most every game) and its a win win situation.

Also tomorrow they come out with their Virtual Windows 7 for FREE...Again lots of hate for a product that works fantastically and has a bunch of free features to go along with great prices.

Looks like this is turning into the netflix of gaming when it comes to streaming and platform accessibility.

I am just not ready for OnLive....yet. I say that now, but who knows three, four, or ten years from now my position on cloud based gaming will be. I know it took me many, many years to accept digital distribution. With no previous precedents OnLive has a lotta e'splain' to do.

I can't believe I actually agree with Stealth about something...

I think I need to drink some holy water.

Stealth: "...really become quite the joke amongst gamers."

Why do you hate on OnLive so much when you clearly have so much in common?

Stealth is stuck about a year in the past.

Sure, we all thought this thing was going to suck hard and go belly up within a few months, but now it's running decently (not the best place for multiplayer, though), it's much more affordable, and it's expanding all over the place.

I see no reason to pick on them now.

I worked for Netflix. I saw the numbers. Netflix wasn't profitable either...

Onlive is ahead of the curve bottom line.
