At CES 2012 television maker LG showed a prototype set that is capable of playing games from the cloud, with no other hardware required. Simply plug in a controller to your TV and play games in HD. The future is now. Almost.
We spoke with a representative from Gaikai, LG's partner for this launch. She told us that the work is still at the pre-alpha stage, but the play on a 55" LG Smart TV already looked great. 1080p HD gaming came across beautifully, with no sign of lag and very little in the way of signal degradation. Games like Street Fighter IV and Darksiders came down from the cloud to the CES show floor with no issues. An off-the-shelf Logitech USB PC controller was being used to play games from Gaikai's library, but we were told that the Xbox 360 controller and even other wireless solutions work just as well.
Gakai's rep says that this demo is so early that they do not have details on which sets will feature cloud gaming yet. There's also nothing in the way of pricing. We were told to expect an experience with even higher quality visuals and more responsiveness when the program finally launches.
Do you see a future for yourself where you would just need your TV to play games? No discs, installing or patching?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I say this product is an instant fail in Canada due to our shitty, shitty and also terrible internet infrastructure..
If its anything like onlive where you get lag and un-responsive issues in LOCAL play let alone playing ppl online than count me out...
This is like those T.V.s with VCRs built in , it's best to just buy the stuff separately.
Still, I think stream will end up being the future of gaming. I don't know if I like it, though. I prefer that the hardware running the game be MY hardware, instead of a server somewhere that is streaming it to what is basically a dummy box :/
I thought the networks in the UK were fairly strong? Here in the states, the infrastructure is so large that some people 50-60 miles from me can barely get bargain basement DSL speeds, while I can get 100mbps all day long without issue. I still feel like cloud gaming will be a bigger hit in the West than in the East, in spite of network infrastructure superiority.
Its all smoke and mirrors. All the broadband companies offer reasonable speeds, but the majority of users get a fraction of that.
it should get better soon though, as the government are forcing them to only advertise minimum speeds soonish, and I doubt theyll want to advertise small speeds.
Either way though, right now, this idea is good as a concept but I don't see it taking off just yet. Theres too much about it thats impractical about it all, including the idea of game streaming/cloud gaming.
Same thing happened to my 50" samsung DLP.. it lasted 7 yrs alltogether though (I had to replace the lamp once about halfway thru its life) it finally totally crapped out last yr..
I've now got lcd tvs from toshiba (3 of them total). Hopefully they last.
I like to use my high def tvs til they burn out.. I can't see buying anything new until that point, with how much they cost.. it would take something pretty special to get myself (and the average consumer for that matter) to invest in something new while I've got a perfectly functioning tv to use..
Nice concept, though.. maybe it will catch on in the future.
