CES: LG televisions with streaming cloud gaming built in photo

At CES 2012 television maker LG showed a prototype set that is capable of playing games from the cloud, with no other hardware required. Simply plug in a controller to your TV and play games in HD. The future is now. Almost.

We spoke with a representative from Gaikai, LG's partner for this launch. She told us that the work is still at the pre-alpha stage, but the play on a 55" LG Smart TV already looked great. 1080p HD gaming came across beautifully, with no sign of lag and very little in the way of signal degradation. Games like Street Fighter IV and Darksiders came down from the cloud to the CES show floor with no issues. An off-the-shelf Logitech USB PC controller was being used to play games from Gaikai's library, but we were told that the Xbox 360 controller and even other wireless solutions work just as well.

Gakai's rep says that this demo is so early that they do not have details on which sets will feature cloud gaming yet. There's also nothing in the way of pricing. We were told to expect an experience with even higher quality visuals and more responsiveness when the program finally launches.

Do you see a future for yourself where you would just need your TV to play games? No discs, installing or patching?

Not really. If the network is not available and I still wanna play, I'd like to have a built-in hard drive into the TV to have an offline mode available.

Nice idea but I think this is far ahead of it's time. WIth my internet cap (Everyone in my country has an internet cap, at least under the major suppliers) my monthly internet bill would most likely go from $65/month to $700/month. I can't afford that. Also, I have done the math, and $700 is on the low end.. per month.

I say this product is an instant fail in Canada due to our shitty, shitty and also terrible internet infrastructure..

Something tells me fighting games will run like crap on this.

If its anything like onlive where you get lag and un-responsive issues in LOCAL play let alone playing ppl online than count me out...

Yup, file this under impressive, but impractical for most. Yeah it's built in, but is the T.V that great, and is the price worth it? It's not live having a console or Onlive is cumbersome. Not to mention how many games this will miss out on that are available on consoles on PC.

This is like those T.V.s with VCRs built in , it's best to just buy the stuff separately.

Since I can't even stream Netflix without it lagging half the time I can't imagine this would be a viable option. At least not yet. Still some cool tech though.

I like to physically own my games and have control over when I play them, paying for something and have someone else have complete control over it does not sit well with me.

Sounds cool, but who is supplying the service? The cloud gaming? Is it On-live or some other subscription based company?

I'm sure it was running great at 1080p... from a PC on a LAN with it in the back room or under a table. We already know from OnLive that even 720p gaming is difficult to pull off streaming without lag. Unless they have some incredible new compression technology I don't buy it.

Still, I think stream will end up being the future of gaming. I don't know if I like it, though. I prefer that the hardware running the game be MY hardware, instead of a server somewhere that is streaming it to what is basically a dummy box :/

Maybe in ten years time. In the uk, the majority of people struggle to pull 1mb a second let alone the bandwidth needed for cloud gaming. Although, considering internet speeds in places like japan, I can see this tech ploughing forward there.

@Courtney Roberts

I thought the networks in the UK were fairly strong? Here in the states, the infrastructure is so large that some people 50-60 miles from me can barely get bargain basement DSL speeds, while I can get 100mbps all day long without issue. I still feel like cloud gaming will be a bigger hit in the West than in the East, in spite of network infrastructure superiority.

It still needs Steam.

I'm assuming "from the Cloud" means streaming...so it's like you not owning the game/dealing with always online DRM/having it completely up to your connection speed to how well it runs/internet caps being too low for this kind of thing to be realistic for a lot of people...all in one.

Nice idea but no thanks. My SNES and PS2 are still going strong. But the 1080p DLP i bought a while back only lasted 5 yrs before the light engine crapped out. Loosing a TV is bad enough but to also loose your main gaming machine at the same time? Not to mention portablity. i went out of the country last year and took my console with me. Cant do that wiht a 55' though.

I hope we never go cloud only. It needs to supplement what we already have, not be the main method of delivery, and essentially be Gamefly streaming on our consoles, like Netflix.

@One red:
Its all smoke and mirrors. All the broadband companies offer reasonable speeds, but the majority of users get a fraction of that.

it should get better soon though, as the government are forcing them to only advertise minimum speeds soonish, and I doubt theyll want to advertise small speeds.

Everyone keeps saying "oh consoles are becoming computers now HUB HUB HUB!!" well.. TV's are too guys..

Either way though, right now, this idea is good as a concept but I don't see it taking off just yet. Theres too much about it thats impractical about it all, including the idea of game streaming/cloud gaming.

@that32bitguy:

Same thing happened to my 50" samsung DLP.. it lasted 7 yrs alltogether though (I had to replace the lamp once about halfway thru its life) it finally totally crapped out last yr..

I've now got lcd tvs from toshiba (3 of them total). Hopefully they last.

I like to use my high def tvs til they burn out.. I can't see buying anything new until that point, with how much they cost.. it would take something pretty special to get myself (and the average consumer for that matter) to invest in something new while I've got a perfectly functioning tv to use..

Nice concept, though.. maybe it will catch on in the future.

pretty cool for casual players and people who want to show off, but i see lag becoming a big problem, some games will probably get standard definition like onlive., and peripheral exclusives (consoles/pc) wont be available.
