The face tracking and animation tech behind the newly announced Avatar Kinect service sounds ideal for games. Imagine an RPG where you could see your party's faces in a status window. Or a horror game that eases up on the tense situations if it sees that you're becoming scared.
The implementation of this technology in games is still a ways off, but Microsoft Senior Director of PR for Entertainment Services, Jose Pinero, says that they were already thinking along those lines.
During a discussion on Avatar Kinect's underlying technology, Pinero told Destructoid, "When we came up with this technology we were clear that this would be brought into other experiences. This would be used in games and this would be used in other social experiences within the platform."
While he was vague on how far off the inclusion of this tech in games is, Pinero sounded sure that we could expect more than just talking chat heads from it in the future.
"The team working on this technology is hardcore about 'how can we bring this to more services or offerings that we have as a company?'. We have people thinking about 'what else can we do with this?' This is just the beginning and we have a lot of people dreaming big."
I suggested a poker game where people could see your poker face on your avatar. You owe me if you use it, Microsoft.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Kinect is perfect for that kind of stuff.
No thanks.
And by that I mean the look on my avatar's face.
It's not that a hate making a virtual person (I can tolerate the Miis), I just can't stand how cheesy and dumb they look. *annoyed*
No I agree, I look at my mii and home avatar and while I'm not really attached to them I don't hate them either. Then I look at thoses 360 avatars and.......... I want to set the things on fire. I can't tell you why I just hate em.
Replace the zombies in deadrising 2 with avatars and I would have the avatar genocider achievement in 2 hours tops.
Hahaha, these avatars are cruising for a bruising. I never understood their stance. Why do all avatars, male or female, stand in that gay little hip-jutting-out pose? Maybe I just want my avatar to stand up straight, or shoegaze, or slouch...
Yeah, I wouldn't play frightening games if I wanted to be coddled when the tension reached it's peak level. I have a handfull of other really interesting ideas on how the Kinect could augment traditional controller played survival horror games into something truly horrendous, but I'm keeping my mouth shut in hopes that no one else comes up with them until I have my shot after finish school.
Expect MS royalties soon Mr North.
