CES: Avatar Kinect technology could come to games photo

The face tracking and animation tech behind the newly announced Avatar Kinect service sounds ideal for games. Imagine an RPG where you could see your party's faces in a status window. Or a horror game that eases up on the tense situations if it sees that you're becoming scared.

The implementation of this technology in games is still a ways off, but Microsoft Senior Director of PR for Entertainment Services, Jose Pinero, says that they were already thinking along those lines.

During a discussion on Avatar Kinect's underlying technology, Pinero told Destructoid, "When we came up with this technology we were clear that this would be brought into other experiences. This would be used in games and this would be used in other social experiences within the platform."

While he was vague on how far off the inclusion of this tech in games is, Pinero sounded sure that we could expect more than just talking chat heads from it in the future.

"The team working on this technology is hardcore about 'how can we bring this to more services or offerings that we have as a company?'. We have people thinking about 'what else can we do with this?' This is just the beginning and we have a lot of people dreaming big."

I suggested a poker game where people could see your poker face on your avatar. You owe me if you use it, Microsoft.

I hope we see more 1 vs 100 type stuff with Kinect/ avatar integration.

Kinect is perfect for that kind of stuff.

I can only imagine the faces on the avatars of people doing not-so-family-friendly-things on the other end of this.

And by that I mean the look on my avatar's face.

Personally, I like scary games to be SCARY so that bit seems a bit stupid. It reminds me of the Wii heart monitor idea. Other than that it's cool I guess.

Kinect-schminect...I love video games but am not interested in anything kinect. I've got more than enough titles this year to keep me busy. The concept is neat but I honestly wouldn't buy one if it cost 25 dollars

I don't know about you guys, but I have this unreasonable urge to punch these avatars in the face, including mine.

It's not that a hate making a virtual person (I can tolerate the Miis), I just can't stand how cheesy and dumb they look. *annoyed*

I think a horror game that uses kinect would do much better using your fear against you. Like if your assailant jumps out at you and you flinch, freak out etc, that enemy will do more damage / will engage you on some sore of movement sensitive struggle because you were caught by surprise, and conversey if said enemy jumps out at you and you cooly plug it in the face, you do double damage or whatnot because you werent too busy untying your panties to pull off a proper kill shot.

No I agree, I look at my mii and home avatar and while I'm not really attached to them I don't hate them either. Then I look at thoses 360 avatars and.......... I want to set the things on fire. I can't tell you why I just hate em.

Replace the zombies in deadrising 2 with avatars and I would have the avatar genocider achievement in 2 hours tops.

@shotgun: I like that idea. Anything that makes a game more intense and engaging is good in my book. Using your fear against you is a lot better than babying a player.

Hahaha, these avatars are cruising for a bruising. I never understood their stance. Why do all avatars, male or female, stand in that gay little hip-jutting-out pose? Maybe I just want my avatar to stand up straight, or shoegaze, or slouch...

Yeah, I wouldn't play frightening games if I wanted to be coddled when the tension reached it's peak level. I have a handfull of other really interesting ideas on how the Kinect could augment traditional controller played survival horror games into something truly horrendous, but I'm keeping my mouth shut in hopes that no one else comes up with them until I have my shot after finish school.

@Ace829 Exactly I wrote that they make me want to punch people in the comment section also a few days ago when they announced the avatar kinect thing. It's the stupid poses they do and how hardly no ones avatar looks like them whereas most mii's I've seen resemble who they are suppose to be at least slightly. I'm not opposed to the idea of avatars I just hate the way they look.

Theoretically, if you stopped publishing all Microsoft articles that mentioned Kinect, would there be any Microsoft articles left to publish?

Just asking
