I can admire what they seem to want to do, but in the end it's just going to be gimmick system 3 from Nintendo to me, and I won't waste my money on it.
I'm not worried about Nintendo: it is the other devs who I'm concerned won't fully utilize it.
That's usually how it works, Nintendo shows off how it can work, then 3rd Party's copy that, and take it in their own direction. Which is why the Wii got so many fitness games, because Wii Fit sold like hotcakes.
The potential here is numerous, they can do so many cool things with the Wii U Controller. I just can't wait until E3, to see everything they come up with, for the launch software. Ubisoft had some cool idea's for their games at last years E3, so a whole year later, they really could have some cool new ideas!
Someone call me when invention starts following necessity again in this effing industry.
Also, am I the only person who thinks that having to look back and forth between your TV and a "tablet" for game info will be completely and utterly disruptive to immersion and flow?
I can't think of a worse way to have a rear view mirror on a car game. Put that shit on the screen so I can get the info I need in a glance. If I have to look down to my lap to see my rear view mirror, chances are when I look back up my car will be careening off the road. So dumb.

That's actually the probably with most uses of the controller in my mind. What good is having an inventory or options screen on your controller if you have to look away from the screen to look at it in the first place? Might as well pause the action and have the inventory come up on the main screen because you ain't gonna be doing any other controlling during that time anyway!
vita doesn't come with every system. So even if it can, good luck finding a studio willing to dump resources into Somthing only a minority can use. The lackluster vita sales won't help it either. It would be up to Sony to push it like Microsoft does with kinect. But once again that is bundle with the system.
On topic: I think the WiiU has a ton of potential. I am exited to see what is done with it. I think alot of PC games like RTS and MMO will work great with the controler.
It is a massive industry with billion dollar corporations: complacency has set in. Nothing is "necessary" anymore, so "dreamed up cool stuff" is the only way for innovation to come out.
I think it could work well depending on the developers and the game itself. You could do picture in picture were a small square on the screen shows the main game and the rest is filled with mirror or items. Imagine SKYRIM with all your favorites hot keyed on the pad no pauseing. Multiple load out in FPS along with interactive radar. Sending a spy bot out, control it with the motion while still being able to shoot with your character on the tv. If u use your imagination. The possibilitys are endless and it seems a lot less like a gimmick and more like an awesome new way to play games.
The same thing was said about the Wii remote, or the DS for that matter. People usually can't see the potential for something that's different, because they haven't got to use it for themselves yet.
I get a kick out of people calling it a gimmick, or a goofy looking controller. How is it anymore of a gimmick than at PSVita? Its practically the same thing as a PSVita, only its not a handheld. It has almost all the same buttons and functions of the PSVita, except it has rumble, and two extra trigger buttons.
It has all the traditional controls, but just with a screen in the middle of the control. Oh, and it doesn't let you finger the back of the system, which if you ask me, that's the biggest stupidest gimmick of the past 10 years, which comes from Sony, not Nintendo. So who does the gimmick systems? The one who comes up with them originally, or the one who just copies them outright?
The doubters of the ds said the same thing people are saying now about the wiiu.
And you'reright; it does work with the ds.
Well i get that, but I can't see it doing anything incredible. Motion gaming has kind of fallen flat for me, and I can't really see this being any different *shrug*.
Different strokes for different folks I guess
The demo in question allows you to see behind yourself with the touch of a button: you don't have to spin around.
Nintendo everything posted a story about this with pics.
I kinda agree, but what Nintendo did with skyward sword is AMAZING. The motion controls bring a feeling of really being in the game. It's almost like link is just an avatar.
This latest generation of motion controlled stuff has shown me I'm really only going to be happy with a simple controller that moves a guy on the screen. I own a Wii like everyone else on the planet Earth, but I can't shake the feeling of "fool me once". Good luck to you who keep seeking out new ways to enjoy games, but I do not journey with you. :(
I have been thinking this too. However, some games could be made to utilize both features, perhaps by making tablet menus pause the active game while using only the tablet.
The second screen on the DS is a red headed stepchild of game development. Devs put something there because they have to have something there and that something is usually a command prompt, mini map, or inventory management.
The Wiimote for all it's bluster usually amounts to a light gun or motion sensor at best, an is only passable after they released an add on that made it work at a reasonable level.
They ARE gimmicks, just like the last time Nintendo tried them with the virtual boy, the power glove, and that weird motion sensor floor mat thing they had. You remember they fiddled with voice control once or twice as well.
Nintendo has a history of gimmicks in the video game industry. Suggesting otherwise means a lack of historical knowledge of the company and a set of blinders regarding its current actions.
I'd hate to have had the internet back in the early 80s. People probably would swear by a single joystick and button as the only way to play games and scoffed the NES for having a D-pad and two buttons.
To play my own devil's advocate for a minute...
I actually didn't give enough credit to the industry... hardware innovations such as the Avenger controller for disabled gamers or the just-announced Fiona gaming tablet are great examples of needs being met by innovation.
No one out there had a great idea or "killer app" for this tablet-console-controller monstrosity. There were no *unbelievable* concepts that were waiting until this existed to come to fruition. Not to say that something neat or somewhat worthwhile can't come out of it, but its hardware manufacturers doing marketing at this point. Dream up what you think can be the next "must have" gadget and cram it down the throats of developers and consumers alike, despite no one having asked for this.
They caught a break with the Wii and everyone and their brother bought one but stopped playing after Wii Sports got old a month later. I think most people understand it as a fad now because it did not solve a problem or address a concern in the community in a way that was meaningful in the long term.
But alas, as long as people keep buying the fads someone out there will keep coming up with this dreck.
Not if you hold the tablet up to the screen, but slightly off the side.
And what I meant was to look at the mirrors you have to look away from the road.

I still say that about the wii remote and the ds. With the exception of a couple of games, I still don't see how the wii remote made gaming any better than a traditional controller, and the few exceptions that people can think up doesn't justify the 6 years of utter shit that the wii has churned out/inspired.
Even the ds doesn't impress me. Sure, nintendo incorporated touch screen controls nicely, but in my eyes they never justified using two screens. When the ds was first announced I figured that they wouldn't find any useful ways to use two screens during gameplay and I was right. With a very few small exceptions, all ds games just use one of the screens for a map/inventory screen/HUD or something that could have just been put in a submenu. I can kind of see the use of those kind of HUD features getting their own screen instead of cluttering up a tiny handheld, but we don't need those HUD elements to get their own screen on regular sized TVs. Even if the wiiu turns out a ton of amazing games, I'm almost sure that those games will be amazing on their own merit, not because of the tablet controller, just like almost every amazing game on the wii/ds would have been just as good with a traditional controller/one screen.
I'm anticipating another "every 2-3 months, get Nintendo first party game, then ignore Wii, then get first party game, etc".
Well that's your opinion, but the fact of the matter is, the Wii and the DS captured the mass-market with there so called "gimmicks" of the systems. So to 95 million and 150 million people respectively they changed gaming for them.
You might not like the Wii Remote, but Wii Sports alone was enough to justify that controller to most people. You might not like touchscreen gaming, but to some people Nintendogs, or Brain Age changed handheld gaming for them. You might not of liked it, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't new, or innovative at the time and as a result they changed gaming forever!
my point was that those innovations weren't useful to quality games.
Gimmicky motion controls have done much more harm than good, regardless of how much they sold. And if you read my post again, I didn't say anything bad about touch screen gaming, it definitely has merit, my point was that having 2 screens was a useless gimmick just like the naysayers predicted.
Finally, nintendo did change gaming, but the question is for how long, or if it was for the better. I think the casuals are already growing tired of motion crap and brain training, so now companies are going to shift more and more efforts into finding the next gimmick to herd up the sheep. Sounds like nothing i want to be a part of because once again sales =\= quality
The Dreamcast had a screen in it's controller and was quite helpful for RE games and Sports games, infact, I'll say it still has the definitive versions of RE2 and 3 because of that, yet, how far did that system get again?
@MrFloppyknickers
Um, since when did the Power Glove have anything to do with Nintendo?
"Rear view mirror SOUNDS great until you realize that you need to take your eyes completely off of the actual screen to look at the controller. That's actually the probably with most uses of the controller in my mind."
^ This. I think having to look away would get annoying really quick. Same problem with those Logitech keyboards that display game info on them. Who the hell wants to look down at their keyboard or controller in the middle of an intense game? There is plenty of room on-screen for that information. The potential uses of the screen don't remotely offset what I expect will be a very high cost.
Oh come on, comparing a primitive LCD screen, that was black and white for god sakes, to this controller is just ridiculous. I'm not even going to try to argue about it, because its pointless.
But yeah that's why the DreamCast failed. It was because it had a screen in the controller, not the fact that Sega ran it company like shit. Nope the DreamCast failed just because it had a cheap LCD screen in the controller. Great observation! So obviously Nintendo is already doomed, and it going to fail too right?
