CES 2010: Over 3.8 million PS3s sold this holiday photo

At the Sony Electronics press conference at CES today, Kaz Hirai announced that this past holiday season was the most successful holiday for the PlayStation 3.

What that means is that following the last week of November, over 3.8 million units were sold worldwide. Sony is saying that's a 76% increase over the previous year, no doubt partly in fact due to the introduction of the slim PS3 model, along with the console's price drop.

According to Hirai, 1.7 million of the 3.8 million were sold in North America alone. Were you among one of those new adopters? If so, what took you so long? Was it the price drop, the size drop, or the games?

I just got my PS3. I think it was a combination of the price drop and the catalog of games that it had was finally enough to make me really want one. Now that I have one I almost wish I had gotten one sooner. It does a lot of little things right that annoy me about my 360.

Buy a PS2 slim, I got one for 29.99 factory refurbished from the Sony store, and for an extra 4 dollars they gave me a year warranty on it.

I bought my PS3 as soon as the Slim launched. Why did I wait so long?

I had already established 4 years of friendships, relationships and reputation on XBox 360 and I felt that anything near $600 was just a greedy way to pass off the cost of the movie-format war onto gamers. That and the number of exclusives I was interested in I could count on one hand.

the games. Just too many sweet exclusives on PS3 and coming up!
and i still dont care about any xbox game to justify the buying of it.
Plus many xbox "exclusives" end up on PC eventually.

They killed BC what... 2 years ago? Give over it. You've had more than enough time to buy an older BC unit for yourself if it really means that much to you.

At least come up with something creative. We've been hearing this same rhetoric for ages now. The only reason to have BC in the first place is to convince people to buy the new system when there aren't a lot of games for it. Buying a PS3 for PS2 BC at this point is like buying a Blu-Ray player to watch DVDs.

@Loophole.

Mine plays PS2 games. So I guess this means that some PS3's really do everything, eh?

So if my math is right, this translates to that they only LOST 152 MILLION DOLLARS. Good job, that's down from last year!

I finally got one this holiday and yes, it was the price drop that helped a lot...in Brazil the PS3 can go for insane prices and it was quite pleasent to see a price drop at the end of the year.

Finally I was able to play Uncharted and...well...everything else that I was missing...

I scoured the Earth to find a good-condition 60GB launch model. It does EVERYTHING...that I wanted a PlayStation 3 to do.

Are we still butthurt over the BC thing? Christ.

Those BC PS3s are wicked easy to find. They are all fucking over Craigslist. I can't find a decently priced Slim to save my life. It's all 60GB PS3s.

I bought the Slim last Fall mainly because of the price drop, the noise reduction, the fact that it wasn't ugly as hell, and the fact that I wanted to be able to play Heavy Rain, Last Guardian, and Uncharted 2. I waited because I had plenty to play between my 360 and PC already.

I was one of those late adopters. The ps3 was finally at a price I was willing to pay, not to mention that it finally had some games I wanted.

@Xzyliac: I'm 'butthurt' for them despite owning a first gen. ps3 that lives up to the newly false ad 'it does everything'. It's just not fair to new ps3 buyers despite the fact mine cost double what they pay. Too bad Sony is still losing bank on the damn thing. Hardware BC, the ability to swap the HD for a bigger one of your choice, and different memory stick compatibility makes all the difference in the world.

Yeah and I see where you're coming from. I guess I just can't sympathize because I don't see it as being that big of a deal. It's a bummer but whatcha gonna do? It's still definitely worth the price tag so as far as I'm concerned it's still a fine machine. Gotta let go of the past, man.

I bought one the day after the slim and price drop were made official. I'd wanted one since it was released, and as I watched games like GTA IV and LittleBigPlanet come out over the years (along with others)... I cringed, knowing that for how much I make I couldn't justify the extra expenditure - as much as I really wanted to.

Plus, I bought my PS2 a very short while before ITS first price drop, so after having waited so much time for the PS3, I could wait a little longer to not be made the sap again :)

I bought mine on december 31. It was a combination of a slightier cheaper price (even here in mexico), slimmer case and being the only console i didn't have. But mostly... because i finally had a little extra money to use. =)

I probably would have cared more about PS2 BC if it had been region free. Then, I could stop using Swap Magic every time I wanted to play Namco X Capcom, Berserk, Hokuto No Ken or anything that starts with "Sengoku Basara".

If the PS2 BC actually does less than my original PS2, then I just couldn't even consider spending an extra $100 on something that I can already do.

I know Japanese PS2 games don't factor into any else's decisions, but the point still stands - Why pay more for something you can already do? Unless you don't already have a PS2, in which case... wow.

Eh, I play PS2 games on a big-ass TV, and it looks fine. Better than fine for some games. Sengoku Basara X on the PS2 almost puts BlazBlue on the PS3 to shame.

I wanted a PS3, but having 4 (going on 5) kids, i had to spend my money in other ways. So i told everyone i wanted best buy gift cards and by the time christmas was over i had enough cards to buy a PS3 and Uncharted 2. My flotilla of kids was the only reason i was a late adopter (i got an xbox two years ago from my wife as an anniversary gift) Thankfully i didnt get into the PS2 much, but i still had like 3 dozen PS games and they play all nice on my slim.

Oh, and the PS3 does not do everything. I tried xbox discs, wii discs, saturn discs, and even a dreamcast disc. nothing worked. (the dreamcast disc actually made the PS3 turn off completly)

Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to answer the question.

I did buy a PS3 Slim, actually. I only bought it because I found somebody willing to buy my old PS3 for $200, and I thought I may as well buy the newer, more reliable Slim with all the Best Buy gift cards I accumulated.

This was mainly because I wanted a fresh two-year warranty from Best Buy - the form factor had nothing to do with it, unless we count that the new build has better air flow (thus, more likely to last longer) based on Ben Heck's dissection of it.

Actually for me it wasn't just the price, but the reduced power consumption. If you're paying your own power bill, that can add up every year burning through 600-800 watts just on one console.

Hehe, I'm surprised so many people are still going after it. My console is in almost perfect condition, never really had any problems with it. I've also added 250GBs to it, just to make it THAT much better. The only real issue is that my controllers are starting to 'age' and it shows.

As far as the BC goes, I've had it since launch and I have yet to use it once. Quite honestly, with all the amazing new PS3 games out now, I just can't sit around and re-play the same outdated games I've played and beaten several times before. Nor do I really have the need to rent or repurchase last-gen titles.

how come every picture of the ps3 slim makes it look ass ugly and super wide. Seriously I hated it for the longest time until I saw one at my friend's house... the thing is pretty small and the matte finish doesn't look nearly as bad in person.

While I do agree it'd be nice if new buyers could have BC and memory sticks, you can still swap out hard drives on the slim.

I just got a PS3 Slim not too long ago. The price drop was definitely the deciding factor in my purchase. I also like the idea of free online play and the fact that the PS3 would last longer than 10 months, unlike the Xbox I had.

I had an orignial 60 BC model the day it came out. I won it in a raffle (take a breath). It was really just a fatter PS2 for me until some of the better games came out. By the time i plugged fallout 3 into it, i got the Yellow Light of Death. LUCKILY i was dating a girl who worked for gamestop at the time and only had to pay around 100 bucks to get a used 40 gig later model (give or take after a few trade ins). I DID NOT KNOW THAT THEY HAD CANCELLED BC ON THE NEWER MODELS AT THAT POINT. needless to say i was pretty pissed.

now id do anything for a slim. i find it...sexy. gahh what to do what to do

I've been thinking about it. My main obstacle is not price, nor has it ever been. The main obstacle - and I know this is quite silly - is PS3 fanboys. Honestly the biggestbunch of muppets I've ever come across on the internet*. They've totally put me off the system. Stupid I know, but I rate PS3 fanboys only just a tad higher than the BNP. I just don't want anything to do with them. I've got some money saved up, and yet, for all the goodness of the PS3 that I've experienced, I just don't want to hop on the cuntwagon.

Perhpas I should buy a PS3 and just pretend that the internet doesn't exist.

*I'm aware that Xbox fanboys are a bunch of cuntmuppets too, but I got my Xbox before I started frequenting game forums and was therefore unaware. I still don't think Xbox fanboys are as bad as PS3 fanboys, anyway. They are more antagonistic pisstakers, whilst the PS3ers are precious little princesses with foul mouths.

The price came down and some worthwhile exclusives came out, and that was that. I mean, except for maybe Uncharted 1, Little Big Planet, and Valkyria Chronicles, as well as a handful of PSN exclusives like flower, there wasn't much worth playing on PS3 for the past 2 years, and for me, not nearly enough reason to burn $599 on one. All the multiplatform games play as good or better on the 360, so those weren't incentive to get a PS3... Hell, as slow as the first couple years of PS3 were, Sony might as well just have launched it this past 2009 Holiday season. Thankfully, I think the system is FINALLY starting to hit it's stride, in terms of software, and with the cheaper price point, it's finally worth it to jump in.

A little off topic, maybe, but I was on a train yesterday coming home from University and was in the unfortunate position of being on the same car with private high schoolers. The same little shits that pushed and shoved their way on. Where the topic of discussion amongst 12 year olds was their prestige level and what a acog is bette than. THIS is your fanboy. Kids with iphones given to them by Daddy and no regards for others in public areas... and M rated videogames because their parents don't give a shit. Fanboys aren't the problem, Rich neglectful parents are.

To all the PS2 BC complainers: When Sony offered it you didn't want to pay the asking price for it. So they removed a feature that they felt wasn't important to a majority of PS3 buyers. The whole point of them offering BC was to give early adopters a reason to upgrade because there wasn't many games for it at first. Now there is no reason to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games. It's like buying a Blu-Rayer player to play DVDs, sure you can do it but why would you spend the money to in the first place?

...because we all had really strong collections of dvd's and ps2 games that arent immediately irrelevant because a new piece of technology is released?
