CES 2010: MS's Greenberg: 3D gaming? Not any time soon photo

It seems like 3D is the big focus here at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. It's nearly impossible to miss the demonstration displays and the weirdos with the crazy glasses on here at the show. It's all anyone is talking about. Microsoft's Xbox Director of Product Management, Aaron Greenberg, also noticed this, but it doesn't sound like he feels that 3D is going to change gaming anytime soon.

"I think there's a lot of questions, to be honest," Greenberg told us in a meeting here at CES. "3D is great in the theater, but for the living room? I think we're a long ways away from that."

While the Xbox 360 currently supports 3D with games like Avatar, Greenberg points to things like required sitting distances and the need for glasses as potential hurdles.

He adds: "If the consumers want it? Fine."

"In the theater there's nothing between you and the experience, but as you have other people in the room and other people walking by, well, it's not the same experience."

Because video games are complete unplayable in the conditions, apparently.

Meh, I'm not interested in 3d. Seems more like a fad.

Philips already has a 3DTV that works from a wide spectrum of angles without the need of glasses. Give it 6-10 years before 3D is really a main thing for the livingroom with games and whatnot.

Of course MS would say their competition's ideas will fail. The only thing sinking here, MS, is your own boat.

It took bow many years for HDTV to take off? And now that people are finally phasing over to that, they want to try to market this fad to us?

At least Greenberg seems to have his head on straight, I'll give him that.

It's a money grab. Constantly getting consumers to upgrade to a new product. Hell, I'm still paying off my HDTV.

Because Aaron Greenburg is not only the authority on all things worthwhile, he is the world's smartest man, and can see the future. He's also a pedophile.

My film classes suggest that 3D is indeed very near in our future. As for games, I don't think they'll be too far behind once it becomes the standard in film, however that comes around.

Image fidelity is still junk. You can't fix that with flat one plane displays. When I can wear it all on my head... I'll buy in.

The current 3D/Natal gaming nonsense reminds me of reading the gaming press in the early '90's, when everyone seemed convinced that we'd all be buying Afterburner-style motorised chairs and huge VR headsets to put in our houses. Konix Multisystem, anyone? Also, anorexic Dakota Fanning seems to think that Lois Lane and mini Lois Lane look lame-O.

"In the theater there's nothing between you and the experience, but as you have other people in the room and other people walking by, well, it's not the same experience."

is it just me or is that a completely opposite remark? but i'm also not Aaron Greenberg and cannot buy a complete theater just for myself with no one there but me.

i don't have people walking in front of me when i'm playing a game and if so, i pause the fuckin game. now a movie theater, i wil specifically choose my area hoping no one sit near me (so i can fart freely without concern) but someone will pick the dam spot in front of me and so i fart anyway hoping to scare them of.

My guess is that it's better to say "we don't want to do 3d", than "our system can't handle doing 3d". Which is probably the actual reason. I mean it's been confirmed that Natal will take up some 15% of system resources, so the extra resources needed to pump out twice the number of frames to do 3d would probably put the 360 somewhere a little past Wii land as far as juice left for the game itself.

Having only one valid eye, I can only hope games will not eventually become a 3D-only thing. It's bad enough that you have to buy plastic peripherals that takes up heaps of space.

Imagine how goofy we'd look playing Guitar Hero with a vitality sensor on our fingers, wiimotes strapped to our forearms, DDR dance pads under our feets and silly 3D glasses on our heads...

2010 is the year of 3d for sure, however who the hell asked for 3d? i never heard anyone say hey 3d would be awesome, if your developing 3d make holographic style 3d not this anaglyph or stereo 3d crap that requires glasses or equipment that muse be puchased and lost. all this 3d crap lately is just 'hey look at it through these glasses and theres a bit more depth to the scene" all while making you sick. i dont want depth, i dont even care for 3d, i dont know why theyre pushing it so much.

This is why we don't fire *everyone* who though 3-D was a good idea at the end of the 20th century. We fire all of them but a lowly intern named Jenkins, so when some schmuck says, "We should make our games 3-D!" and everyone responds, "Yeah, that'd be neat!" someone can say, "Wait. No. Look at Jenkins over there. He can't put on his own socks. He eats pencils for sustenance. He advocated 3-D. Let's not go down his road." And then that would be that.

Everything every company does is a money grab, HD was a money grab, DVD was a money grab, etc. etc.. That doesn't mean it's bad for consumers, I think we can all get behind DVD at least right?

I kind of agree with the article that 3D will take a while to get into a lot of living rooms, Blu-Ray seems to be taking a while relatively and most people just got their HDTV and want it to last for years. Also, this may be a personal thing, but I don't see myself ever putting on glasses to play a game or watch a movie.

I know a lot of people who have gone 3D with their PC games though and most seemt to love, tell me I will love it, etc. etc.. Who knows.

3D is here, and it's already being done well. It won't be for everyone but a majority of gamers will enjoy it. Of course Greenberg is going to say that b/c I don't believe their console is prepared to support Real 3D.

I want it... I will buy it... you don't want it, don't buy it and stop bitching!!! Time will tell if people are ready or not. Of course it will be early adopters at first... it always is... but this isn't like when hdtv's came out, more like when hdtv's started going 1080p. It's not like it's completely changing the game expense-wise, it's just adding a feature into the tv to help future-proof it. For people who are in the market for a new tv, spending a couple hundred more on a 2,000 tv is just good sense in order to make sure your tv isn't really outdated in 2-3 years.

Meanwhile at the Sony booth... Super StarDust HD and GT5 running in 3D with a firmware update slated for Summer... It will also make Sony's motion controller interesting as well because you'll have real 3D 1 to 1 motion with depth.

3D could have been good for Natal but it seems Microsoft didn't bet on this horse and feels left out. Awww muffin!

I think MS is right to pass on the current 3d fad; it doesn't have any real staying power and isn't anything new; it's been tried dozens of times in the past. I think like motion controls, it might be a nice novelty for a couple minutes, but then everyone will go back to regular gaming.
