At the Microsoft press conference, a tasty little tidbit was revealed concerning everyone's favorite hyped-game-that-nobody's-played, Alan Wake. Despite the game itself taking ten billion years to develop, Remedy is already looking at downloadable content for the game, with the story set to expand via DLC "episodes."
The Xbox 360 exclusive will be "story-driven, like a TV series." The game itself shall be broken into episodes when it launches, allowing an easy transition into extra, post-launch episodic chapters. It seems that Alan Wake will further its exposition in exactly the same was as the PS3's Heavy Rain.
Microsoft ED&D boss Robbie Bach calls Alan Wake "the TV show Lost, as written by Stephen King, and filmed by David Lynch." Not that they're overselling it or anything.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It doesn't look all that special and it's not like we haven't seen a third person action/horror game before. I couldn't care less about when this game releases and would rather have had Remedy give us another solid Max Payne title.
Its a lot like RE4 in my opinion.
1) It was one of the first 360 games announced.
2) It looks cool? I dunno. That's my reason for being hyped about it. It can look like [insert game here] all it fucking wants. Still looks sweet.
I don't see THAT much hype coming out of it but, you know, that's me. In fanboy circles perhaps bit they're dellusional anyway. The game could walking for ten minutes with fucking Nickelback playing and then credits and they'll still defend it so long as it's theres.
I always assumed a good portion of the hype was centered around the fact that Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne) is making it.
I don't mind DLC if it's like an expansion pack, with a new area, with an extended sidequest, or something of intrigue that's fun, or with an entirely new narrative like the GTA ones, but for the DLC to be a continuation of the story reeks of being strung along for months twenty bucks at a time for content that should just be on the fucking disc anyway.
That too.
I remember when I first heard about episodic DLC being used to carry on the story. I thought, "How innovative!" Now, I think, "Pretty standard."
The story had better be damned good, because Remedy have effectively shot off the rest of their toes with this one.
I'll buy the DLC if it's a bridge between games, but if it's missing content or slotted in-between levels, then I won't pay for it.
The gaming public has really fucked itself with DLC. It was a nice idea at first, mini-expansion and the first expansions period on consoles. I liked the idea. Now we have $10 map packs, no expansions at all just mini ones and DLC announced and worked on before the game even freaking comes out.
And it's all your fault gamers, you support this crap. You said "oh, free multiplayer maps like we have always got? Nah, I like paying for them!" You said "this game looks awesome, WILL IT HAVE DLC? I NEED TO KNOW NOW!"
You've fucked us. Thanks.
WE DONT WANT A TV SHOW-MIMICING GAME!! Get it through your heads publishers/devs.
We want a fucking complete 100% epic journey in a single player game. We dont want to play 1/5'th of it, be done in 4 hours, then sit for 5 months until we get the following 4 hours of perhaps-awesome-but-still-over-in-an-evening gameplay.
A really really good singleplayer game, that is 100% from start to finish, is awesome.
But these episodic bullshits, they arent worth waiting for. Its not worth waiting for 5 months for a 4hr episode that doesnt even have a proper ending.
So sick of this.
"HAHAHA! this game looks like ass compared to Heavy Rain. And the sad thing is I used to think this was one of the best looking games of all time. now it looks like if should be called 'American Shenmue'"
Oh wow, you actually think Heavy Rain looks good? Every time I see something from Heavy Rain I just get the impression that I am watching a rubber mask move around on the end of a broom.
I won't comment on the Shenmue part, mostly because I don't know what the hell it's supposed to mean.
