Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

What's the hype about? Killzone 2 looks amazing, and these new videos definitely impress.

To be honest, I wasn't very excited about the title up until this week. I didn't understand they hype. I came to understand it a bit more after our CES team had a chance to get some hands-on time with the game on the show floor.

We followed that with a presentation on Killzone 2 and its inner workings. The presentation was peppered with clips that highlight visuals, technology and other details. The video above is a new trailer for Killzone 2, also aired at this presentation. This looks damned good.

After the jump you'll find some of the highlight videos strung together. We think the ballet one is pretty cool. There's a "fine details" video montage in the mix too.

What do you think after seeing this cam footage? Is it just a pretty face on a mediocre game?

Killzone 2...do want more of. I need to go home and play the beta some more.

This is why PS3 and 360 users get dissappointed so often. They see a cutscene and go wild seeming not to realize that a cutscene has nothing to do with how good a game is going to be. I guess that's just the fate of graphics-whores.

Here's what I don't fully understand. I thought these Helghast were mutated humans or something and had to wear masks because of the conditions on their home world. How come humans are running around with their faces completely exposed?

If people think those are in-game graphics, they're retarded. Just like the video that was around before, I mean, you could tell they were pre-rendered. That trailer was good, though it really should show some gameplay considering the game's release is right around the corner. After playing the beta and watching a number of in-game videos, it's pretty obvious that the game is DAMN pretty. I want this game a LOT more than I thought I would. I cannot wait.

Very impressive videos, so much so that I feel compelled to go pre-order it now.

yeah that trailer looked pretty awesome... I hope it actually HAS a story though.

If I remember correctly Halo 3 and Resistance 2 trailers hinted at this deep story and yet after playing all I got out of it was "aliens are here kill em' all"

Call of Duty 4 actually made me WANT to keep playing rather than just being a short distraction from multiplayer shootan.

I have to agree. Both 360 fans and PS3 fans fall for this type of thing every time. That was a good CGI movie with explosions and lots of well rendered faces, but not actual game footage. We would all do better by ourselves and our interest in games if we collectively let developers know that unless you show us the "GAME" (not it's cutscenes or slick hollywood style movies) the hype-train will stay in the station. If I were a Sony fan, I would ask why no awesome gameplay footage....especially given that the game is due to come out shortly. So far, these movies look great!

You make excellent points and that is almost always true. Except for one thing, Sony/Guerrilla HAVE SHOWN actual game-play in many videos concerning this. In fact, I've seen more in-game videos than "trailers" of this particular game, 16 to be exact. A little search on Google should lead you to them, and I think you might agree that the in-game graphics and elements are en par with the CGI movies. To be honest, Killzone 2 seems to be setting itself at a slightly higher bar than the average FPS, imo. This game looks awesome, and probably will play just as well, and I'm totally looking forward to it.

I too don't think these videos help much... they're just cutscenes. I mean all games should have trailers like these, but they should always come coupled with gameplay footage to get the REAL hype :D

Anyways, I just wish this was on PC.

"Is it just a pretty face on a mediocre game?" Ask people who've played it, because trailers do nothing to indicate how it plays.

That said, this game is great, the graphics just help immerse you even more.

I believe in a prior gameplay clip, we saw the opening level, and a direct transition from cutscene to gameplay. I don't think any of the second video is prerendered. More likely, it uses in-game cutscenes. KZ2 is just very pretty.
Qraze's Avatar
Qraze at 01/12/2009 15:03
they're not just cut-scenes, if you fucking watched the second half of the second video, that is pure gameplay just slowed down so you can see it.

@linuxguy:

Yes it's a shooter, but they clearly are going for an epic feel to the game.

Here's what it says on Wikipedia:
"Except for a small number of half-breed Helghast and trained troopers, they require a gas mask and air processing tank that creates air similar to that found on the planet Helghan"

The developers obviously put some thought into the backstory, why would they blatantly contradict what they've already established?

And if the masks they wear mimic the environment on Helghan, shouldn't they not be wearing these masks at all?

If you're going to create a world that is supposed to be immersive, shouldn't you at least make it consistent?
brainderailment's Avatar
brainderailment at 01/12/2009 15:08
@sickNasty, maybe the ones wearing masks on helghan are all half breeds.

@MisterMingo, I'd say all of that second video is in game. Only reason I don't say for sure, is because the game looks so good, I can't tell what is game and what isn't.
The first video is most likely pre-rendered though.

Guerilla Games claims that the entire game is rendered using the in game engine and that none of it is CGI.

@sickNasty: the comma in the descriptive sentence after troopers is there to let you know that they aren't talking about half-breeds. All Helghast, except for a few half breeds, require the gas masks.

As for them wearing the masks on Helghan? Dunno. I guess we can just assume that the masks are apart of their war-helmets and that they all just wear them as standard issue.

Only logical reason.

I'd guess most of their equipment is designed for other environments. They've invaded other planets at least twice, presumably during the First Helgahn War and on Vekta Colony, and with the authoritarian government invading is far more likely than fighting at home. It's probably just become standard issue, and being protected from gas and the psychological impact doesn't hurt either.

Mostly I think it's so they look like super techo space nazis, but who knows what the masks can do. They probably have night vision and shit on them.
Mushman's Avatar
Mushman at 01/12/2009 15:22
The first video is most definitely pre-rendered, all they do is to take the graphics from exsisting engine and enchance to a level that is considered full CGI. It's probably the opening movie for the game itself.

Many games do this, an common example is the opening movie of COD4, where is shows the action elements of the game whilst enchancing the graphics a lot, though not fully pre rendering everything.

The second video is most definely all in game, compare it to the first video, and there is a real decrease in graphical quality, less motion blur, less dynamic lighting, textural quailty decreases, and most of all, the characters models are not as detailed or as realisitic.

In fact, the biggest indicator to the second vid being fully in game, is the slow mo bit. It seems that it is a showcase for the game, showing off just how awesome the deaths are and how incredible the game looks, not to mention a breif physics demo in the form of exploding objects.

That said, I will preodrder this game tomorrow, every video I see, the game looks more and more impressive.

@Trev:

That's EXACTLY the reason the developers keep the masks on them. To make them look cool and to give the game a recognizable look.

It's just annoying to me when a developer tries so hard make their game cool and dark while being completely illogical.

Also, this from wikipedia:

"A barren, unforgiving world, Helghan provides a ready defense with thick, acidic air, dust clouds, and violent surgical lightning storms"

So the humans are invading a planet like that, but are not wearing ANY kind of breathing masks....

I can't speak about Starcraft, but in Halo the things that looked cool and even stuff that was impractical at least MADE SENSE in the universe that was established.

It's just funny to me that everyone loses their load over this game, but fail to recognize this blatant stuff that doesn't make sense.

I'm not 'hating' on the game and I don't doubt the effort put in the game.

It's just silly that everyone overlooks broken logic just because it is a AAA title, but if a movie were to be this illogical it would not be so praised.

To me it's not overthinking at all. These Hellghast and the planet of Hellghan are such a massive part of the game. It's right in your face.

I don't accept that "it's just a video game" line. Seeing these overly dramatic trailers and the epic storyline being set up, do you really think the developers are thinking 'oh this is just a video game'

It would be a different matter entirely if the game was intentionally over-the-top and light-hearted. I want people to expect MORE from games, not just blindly accept logical flaws.

I've played the pre-alpha and was in the multiplayer beta. My personal opinion is that the game plays fantastic. The weapons feel good, gameplay is intense, and I had fun. That’s key! The warzone mode in multiplayer was unique and kept the action fast and furious with its random objectives. The kills are satisfying and ragdoll is awesome. What more do you people want from a FPS. To some, it may seem like they've not made a whole lot of innovations to the FPS genre but it's a really refined game and a fun experience. Guerrilla really went through with a fine tooth comb and it looks like they've made some subtitle improvements with the feedback for the videos I’ve seen of the final build. They've taken some of the best from the FPS genre and applied a slick coat of paint and a whole lot of attention to detail. There's nothing wrong with that. Crysis didn't really bring anything new to FPS but it was a refined game and it sure as hell looked pretty if you had the hardware to run it. Guerrilla is just doing the same for PS3. I’m excited for it and so should you!

I don't understand people judging gameplay from the videos but If you want to "see" game play, check GT's preview:

I gathered that much from the thread, but I have only seen that one gameplay reel (the one they got blasted by gamers because it did not live up to expectations), the same reel that they kept tweaking until they got it right. I am not a Sony fan so pardon me if I don't track down the videos, but I will take you on your word that there have been many new gamplay vids and that they demonstrate varied environments/segments of the game. My only stake in this is that we hold the power. Not the developers or the media.
