CES 2009: Harmonix's Alex Rigopoulos talks Rock Band 3, selling listenable songs

CES 2009: Harmonix's Alex Rigopoulos talks Rock Band 3, selling listenable songs photo

Owners of Rock Band games have repeatedly suggested that Harmonix sell music through the games -- imagine being able to purchase MP3s of Rock Band songs, iTunes-style, from the Rock Band Music Store. At CES 2009 today, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopoulos gave the keynote at Billboard’s “Digital Music Live” session, and he assured us that the company had given the idea some serious thought -- though he doesn’t seem to be entirely sold on it yet.

Directly selling songs to consumers would “change the tenor” of the relationship that Harmonix and publisher MTV have forged with the record labels, Rigopoulos said, but regardless, he claims that he’s “very much” interested in the idea of selling package deals -- i.e., offering a version of a song that’s playable in Rock Band along with a listenable audio file.

Rigopoulos also dropped a tidbit on Rock Band 3 -- namely, that we won’t be seeing it this year. “We’ve actually made a choice to break out of the annual release cycle for Rock Band this year,” he explained, “partly because the annual cycle places limits on the choices you can make as a developer. We’re trying to take a long term view.” In addition, he noted, Harmonix is putting all its efforts toward the previously announced Beatles game, which is due out this fall.

When asked about distributor EA’s stance on the lack of a Rock Band game (read: potential cash cow) in 2009, Rigopoulos explained that EA was willing to let Harmonix control its own IP: “Well, I’m sure they’d take [Rock Band 3] if we gave it to them, but they know how important this series is and they’re willing to give it the time it needs.”

Hey Activision, are you listening? This is how to ensure quality in your franchises, as opposed to milking them to death.

This is funny, because I was just thinking today about how much I still have left to do in the game. Between moving up in difficulty, completing all the challenges, battles of the bands, new challenges based on DLC that will continue to come out, and of course, the tour mode itself, there is a LOT to do.

I'm actually relieved that there won't be a Rock Band 3 for a while.

I love Rock Band. I own both of them and rock out mightily.

I was a tad disappointed with RB2 because it simply didn't add enough to the game to make it worth calling it a sequel. They added a few extra pieces of clothing, they fixed the UI and cleaned up the whole experience. But for a sequel, I expected much more.

I hope they blow us out of the water with #3.

Good. Give them all the time they need to work on that Rock Band keytar.

I can wait as long as they need.

Good.

Now please release rock band 2 in Mexico before I hit Harmonix's offices with infinite wrath.

Also it's nice to see a company that's not sequel raping its IP (I'm looking at you Activision)

I hope... they make a game for DS. Like seriously, it seems like a perfect system for Harmonix to do something cool with. Not like a Rock Band thing or anything, but some sort of actual music/game hybrid instead of a straight playthenotes game.

And Guitar Hero has 4 games confirmed so far for this year (Metallica, Hendrix, 5, and Modern Hits), no to mention another 4 if their plan to make twice as many Guitar Heroes as the 4 Guitar Hero games that came out last year (Aerosmith, World Tour, the two On Tour games). What a sad state of affairs.

Thank you Harmonix for not milking the shit out of my favorite music game.

This is good news. I'm still convinced we didn't even need RB2, as I am still playing RB1 myself.

Good im glad Rock band will not be annual this year. at least EA is letting harmonix have more time to really create something new and hopefully better than its Activision counterpart.

Good spread on their IP

By the time RB3 comes out, hopefully instruments will be the best of quality (with new bells and whistles) and can justify an upgrade!

And this is why I love Harmonix...though I should also extend gratitude towards EA for not trying to force them to release it this year. EA's sure come a long way in the past couple o' years...

...Though, Activision's basically become the new EA, so balance has been restored to the gaming world.

I like these guys, but I refuse to pay extra for a song i now have the rights to (in my mind). I already pay, what, $8.50 for 500 ms points, so roughly $2.50 per song if i buy a 3-pack. Thats cd price here in nz, for say 12 songs.
I would be happy if they managed to make it fully legal, but as far as im concerned, if i buy a song on rockband i have no moral issue with pirating the song if i just want to listen instead of play.

I was worried that Harmonix would lose a lot of credibility if they cranked out a Rock Band 3 this year...looks like that won't be a problem. I'll keep downloading new songs for the next couple years, and I'll hope this Beatles game is as awesome as it could be.

So there will be no new Rock Band game in 2009...I wonder how many different Guitar Hero's there will be?

Good. Most people gave Rock Band 2 a pass because it was a good addition to their music library and let them carry over their songs from Rock Band 1 for cheap, but if they tried to do Rock Band 3 without some kind of big improvement, I could see it failing. I hope they work on full cymbal support for RB3 and see where they can take the group band dynamic.

hahaha, remember when rock band first came out and was announced as a 'platform' and 'you will never have to buy a sequel to rock band'. LOL. douchebags. at least they make good stuff.

@Galagabug:

Nobody's forcing you to buy Rock Band 2 unless you want the new songs that come on the disc and the slightly enhanced features. Unlike with GH2, GH3, etc, all Rock Band DLC works with both versions.

Why talk about Rock Band 3, when Rock Band 2 isn't out (on PS3, PS2 and wii) in Europe yet?
