CES 2009: Escaping 3D gaming and movies was impossible photo

If there were two things we saw too much of at this year's CES it's third-party music game peripherals and 3D gaming and movies. It was everywhere. And apparently, it's the future.

NVIDIA had their flavor of 3D gaming on display, the GeFORCE 3D Vision. The stereoscopic 3D is achieved by a combination of NVIDIA's wireless 3D shades, a compatibile GeForce video card, and a "GeForce 3D Vision-Ready" display. NVIDIA has a number of games on display that utilized the technology, including Guitar Hero III, Tomb Raider Undeworld, Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, and even World of Warcraft

Impressions after the jump.

I had a chance to test drive the set up in both Guitar Hero III and Mirror's Edge and was impressed with the effect, which did an excellent job of tricking my brain into perceiving depth. The glasses were light weight, and even managed to fit comfortably over the glasses I was wearing on the show floor because I was too lazy to put in my contacts.

In the case of Guitar Hero III, the 3D effect was most noticeable behind the note highway -- the characters on stage and the crowd popped quite nicely. It that case, the experience didn't necessarily have any impact on gameplay or the overall experience. Mirror's Edge was a different story, and the sense of speed and feeling of truly being a part of the environment was amplified with the added 3D depth.

NVIDIA's 3D Vision hardware is available for pre-order now, and is compatible with a huge list of existing games which is listed on the official product Web site. Thich seems to indicate that developers have very little if any work, if any, to play nice with the technology.

The biggest issue I see is barrier to entry. While the technology is compatible with a number of GeForce cards already on the market, you'll still need to purchase a 3D Vision-Ready monitor as well as the glasses. By themselves, the glasses will run you a sweet $199.99; NVIDIA is offering a bundle that comes with the glasses, and a 22" 3D Vision-Ready monitor for just a little under six-hundred.

If this year's CES is any indication, the industry seems to think that 3D entertainment is set to take off big. It's certainly impressive, and despite the fact that I'm slightly worried about it causing me to have awful migraines, I'm ready to let it in my home ... for the right price. I'm just not ready to toss out my old hardware and max out my credit cards just yet.

I rocked some shutter glasses in UT. I played for a few hours and when I took the rig off my head, I nearly ate the ground. Inner ear problems, the next "wii elbow."

Ill wait for the polarised-LCD-type (non-glasses) 3D monitors to filter through.

Man I'd love to try that, too bad they can't make it work on any screen, it would rock to use that on one of my HDTV's :-)

typing this on a 32" Samsung, so a 22" screen doesn't sound so inviting :p

Yeah, it's going to take a lot more for 3d to take off big. It's still a deflationary recession; people can't dish this kind of money for this stuff especially when there aren't exclusive design reasons to do it.

So help me when I finish college I am going to find a way to make 2D games cool again (as if wasn't already).

The next big thing, or gimmicky shit we don't really want or need?

Only time will tell.

Oh man L4D would be so crazy with that tech. It kinda sounds like Sony's Real3D might be of better quality of since I have yet to experience any of the various flavors of this "true 3D" tech I really couldn't say either way who is currently doing it best. This is the only one I know of with any sort of price point set.

I'd like to find a video or something of it in action, but I'm not even sure how that'd work.

Bullshit. Alternative-lens technology has been around for over a decade. That's how IMAX was originally designed.

There s absolutely no reason why this can't be implemented now with every, single TV that's out there -- CRT, LCD, whatever. Amazon has an alternative-lens configuration for $99, but it includes some really shit "horror" movies, which is why I never bought into it.

Alternating lens + one frame at a time (whether interlaced or progressive) = 3D. The technology is out there, and it's been proven to work. Requiring a new or special monitor to pull it off, especially when all computer monitors are progressive scan, is total BS and these companies know it.

Does not interest me one bit. It just looks like something that will be a waste of money. Reminds me of some lame shit from the early 90's.

This still merits a gigantic meh from me. Maybe I'm crazy, but I just don't see something that requires you to wear dorky, headache inducing glasses, going mainstream. I'll wait for the hardware that does that for you to come out before I jump on the 3D bandwagon.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not quite old enough to know: Wasn't this stupid stereoscopic 3d bullshit requiring "3d" glasses big in like, the 70s? Why is this crap coming back into mainstream.

I went to disneyworld as a kid and saw a --insert disney franchise-- "3d Experience!!". We wore those dumb glasses and had water sprayed on us when the thing sneezed and felt the little "critters" running under our seats (automated fuzzy things under the seat). That, I think, was the peak of the industry. Why? FARKING WHY IS 3D COMING BACK! Wasn't cool then, isn't cool now, won't be cool later.

3d.

3D gaming makes the most sense with the wiimote, the most advanced user interface. what a combination that would be.

Yeesh, like the note charts in Guitar Hero and Rock Band don't mess with my eyes enough already. Speaking of, the only 3D game that matters is Wario Land on Virtual Boy. Still open to something that's better than just a gimmick, if anyone ever manages that.

I really can't get on this boat. 3-D glasses (like Pariah pointed out) really screws up a person's head after long sessions.
