CES 2008: Sneak a look at SOE's The Agency photo

Sony Online Entertainment invited me over to take a peek at their upcoming spy-themed MMO, The Agency.

The PS3/PC title lets players enter the world of espionage as a member of either the stealthy, 007ish UNITE agency or the more in-your-face mercenary alternative, ParaGON. Both drop you into a skill-based massively multiplayer shooter.

Forget fantasy; there's no staffs, "tanks," or giant rats here. The Agency arms players with state-of-the-art weapons and high-tech spy gear, and your skills in combat, stealth, and cover will determine your level of success. It's shoot or be shot here.

Hit the jump to read more on The Agency

SOE walked me through the game's world, first showing off the European UNITE headquarters. Our player ran through a lovely flower shop to find a hidden door to UNITE's underground base. The base seemed expansive, and contained everything from weapons testing facilities to a working Q*BERT arcade cabinet. I was told that this arcade game was actually running on Flash, and that any other games like this could be implemented in the future.

I was able to watch a networked multiplayer co-op mission that highlighted the roles of individual party members. Some were able to diffuse bombs and and unlock doors, while others can set traps and perform medical duties. All had to work together and use their various talents to complete a fast-paced mission. I this case, the mission was to prevent a group from bombing underground pillars. When completed correctly, the game presents players with an Agency Moments that, when triggered, shows them a rewarding cut scene to finalize the mission.

SOE also showed off some character customization. It seems that your choice of equipment and clothing can change your abilities, making a sort of "you are what you wear" system. If you want to be a hitman, you'd dress like a hitman. This enables you to change your role as easy as changing your clothing, and I'm told that more clothing and gear options open up as the game progresses.

One of the most interesting game features is the Operatives. Operatives are NPCs that work for you. If you give them a mission, they'll do your bidding, and the best part is that you don't even have to be logged in. SOE says that Operatives will even email and text message you when objectives are completed, and can even ask for specific orders.

The Agency is still early, but What I've seen already looks incredibly promising. If done right, this could be a fresh alternative to all of the dwarfs in tights. SOE says there's no set release date yet, but I'm going to remain hopeful for a 2008 release.

Having watched a video on it, I can't tell if the grahpics are stylized or just unfinished. Things seemed stiff and cartoonish, not unlike TF2, but it didn't have the same color or art style so it didn't seem as good. An MMO that isn't the Matrix and doesn't require you to put on your wizard hat and robe or sacrifice anything to the Void Dragon sounds fun though.

Yeah i was interested after reading the news on Kotaku in the morning.
But then i see that SOE logo and think, yeah this could be good in other hands.

So...it's Crackdown done poorly with the fun removed and rare spawns/drops?

This looks like it could be a fun mix between stuff like TF2 and Splinter Cell. I'll stay hopeful, but since I don't have a PS3 and I won't want to pay monthly subscription fees on my PC... hmm...

I've been really interested in this one for a while. A MMO not set in a fantasy or super sci fi setting, not using the over used WoW gameplay model, and developed from the ground up for a console. This will be one of the games that will eventually get me to buy a PS3 again.

I guess this is the new SOE MMOFPS that CaffeinePowered mentioned in his MMOFPS Retrospective - Part 3 (can't seem to find it now).

This game sounds damn fun, and it may have hooked me already, but...

Why the fuck is it in Third Person? Ewwwwwwwww.

Thanks for the update on this, Dale. I saw a preview of this game somewhere a while back, and I was instantly intrigued — even though I’m not an MMO guy. I wonder how they’re going to structure the pricing for this...

Also, I wanted to point out two minor word mistakes in your post (not trying to be a douche here, so please don’t take offense):

Some were able to diffuse bombs... (paragraph above second image)

The word you’re looking for here is “defuse”, a homophone of “diffuse”:

dif·fuse v. 1 a: to pour out and permit or cause to spread freely b: extend; scatter c: to spread thinly or wastefully

de·fuse v. 1 : to remove the fuse from (as a mine or bomb)

—courtesy of Merriam-Webster OnLine

And two sentences afterwards, it says “I this case”; I’m assuming that it should say “In this case”.

Ummm... this is an MMO how exactly? Sounds more like a persistent character shooter, along the lines of Gunz or something. Which is fine, I don't think you could make a game like this as a real MMO anyways. Otherwise it sounds neat, is this PS3 only?

Hee hee. You said homophone.

Anyway, I think the game looks interesting, but I'm taking a "wait and see" stance.

Homophone...that's like a gay phone, right?

@SniperFodder: I know you’re not being serious, but I couldn’t resist...

This is by the Seattle studio, the one that was (at one time) made up of the team for Mythica, a MMO project that Microsoft considered backing, but then dropped. So this has been in the works for a while.

I think they prefer the term "online persistent shooter," or something like that.

Their meta-gaming ideas (for instance, contacting you on your cell phone to make decisions regarding your in-game "operatives") are pretty neat, though the gameplay footage I've seen so far hasn't looked especially amazing or anything.
