CES 2008: Nyko Front Man Wireless guitar for PS3 photo

If you're a PS3-owning guitar game fan, then you probably know about the drama between the makers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Cross compatibility still needs to be sorted out, but you can avoid all of that with Nyko's Front Man Wireless Guitar for the PS3.

Nyko invited me out to see a prototype of this wireless controller that utilizes a switch (in the form of an effects stomp box) to jump between Rock Band and Guitar Hero compatibility modes. The unit sports 80 hours of play time from three AA batteries, and there's also removable pick guards for customization.

The controller seemed pretty solid to me, though I'll need more game time to give any real impressions. These are expected to release in early 2008 for about $60.

Hit the jump to see images of the guitar straps that will also be available soon.

Looks decent, but I have 360 only...

But... it's like the X-plorer. Ew! And no solo buttons....

A for effort, I suppose, but seeing as how I don't need cross-compatibility, I think I'll wait for EA to start moving their stand-alone Rock Band instruments.

I can't go back to the raised buttons on the GH guitars. I'd like a few different options for my next guitar other than the pack ins, so I'm happy to see that the 3rd parties are still trying, but they need to change up the button style.

This is not bad at all and at least it has compaitibilty for both games. I still like the Les Paul from GHIII a little bit better.

If it was for 360 I'd be all over that

I'm skeptical because the Nyko wireless controller for the PS2 sucked. But then again, I have a 360 so it deosn't really matter to me.

I don't usually support Nyko's products, but until the developers sort out their issues, this seems like the only option, really.

I'm waiting to see what Harmonix releases as a secondary option.

But JDevL is right... once you rock the ROCK BAND guitar, the Guitar Hero ones seem like toys for girls and little boys.

I keep staring at my Fender from across the room. I never saw myself as someone who thought of guitars as sexy things. But god damn... it IS sexy.

There hasn’t been a quality third-party guitar yet, so I’m skeptical.

I agree with Bronx.
Every third party i've touched has been shit.

Meh. I really don't like the Explorer design, so I'll pass on this.
