CES 2008: Nyko aims for our hearts with the Charge Base 2 for PS3 photo

Any PS3 controller charger is enough to win me over. Having to directly connect USB cables to the console and power it on to charge the SIXAXIS is quite the hassle, and it's not as quick as it could be. Nyko took things one step further, and I'm sure you'll agree that the packaging and design of the Charge Base 2 for PS3 is as charming as could be.

As you can see, the packaging bears a strong resemblance to the iconic mascot of the web's finest gaming community. Even the promotional sticker is made with robot-ey goodness.

It's not all just looks. I had a chance to get a hands-on look at the Charge Base 2, and it is a pretty slick charging solution. Two small contact adapters are included, and they plug into the top of the SIXAXIS' USB ports and allow the controller to simply sit upside-down in the charger. The system is A/C powered, so it charges much faster than the standard USB. Nyko tells me that 4 hours will provide a full charge.

Quick, painless controller charging with a sexy robot design? It's like they read our minds!

Hit the jump for more pictures of the Charge Base 2.

"Controller Barbecue Set for PS3" is what this should really be called.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea, but I'm not so sure about third party chargers anymore.

This should be safe since the PS3 controllers were built with rechargeable lithiums built in (<-captain redundant), but I can't help but think of the "Wii-Mote Fryer" they put out.

Plus I'm scared to put my DS3 in that thing.

@CameronZoom: Nyko wii-mote fryer? You sure you're not confusing theirs with the Psyclone wiimote destroyer?

i think it's useless.
you can charge and play with an usb cable. why get a charging dock for something that really doesn't need it.

i bet this cost like 25-40 bucks. fuck that.

@Cameron: Wrong brand. Nyko's Wii charge station is fantastic.

Who needs one for the 360? The rechargeable packs and USB cables make that whole process a piece of cake.

I love this thing. Charging the controls are painless. You just plop them into the base and they fit. No negotiating the tiny USB cable or, if you have a big living room, stringing a few USB extension cords so you can lean back and play. It also lights up the room in a pretty cool way when the lights are off.

That last photo looks kind of robo-pornographic, Dale.

@electro lemon, TheToiletDuck, and Niero: Glad to see I’m not the only one who immediately thought that.

Well, for now, I only have one controller, and since my dorm room is small, the short USB cable isn’t an issue. I might pick one of these up when I get a DualShock 3, though, in case the battery life on that is shorter because of the vibration.

I don't have a PS3, but I kinda want it for perversion's sake. It's like wanting to buy a huge glass dildo to display for parents and grandparents just so you can hear how "lovely" it is before announcing it's purpose. Women shouldn't even use those...that's scary.

So let me get this straight....

It's having sex with the SixAxis, right? Or since that's the front of the controller, does this just count as oral?

Am I the only one that never charges his controllers for longer than about 20 minutes at a time? I don't think I've ever charged a controller 4 hours unless I just didn't notice. I guess that's why, like my car, I'm always running on low.

@ Pedro_Blandino - Don't you know that all PS3 owners are rich? What's $20 to $40 bucks when you've already spent your life savings on the console? Ah, and I wouldn't have it any other way. ^_^

eh hem...Pfft
