For gamers waiting for the rumored Earth-shattering Xbox 360 news, tuck the kids in and go to bed. If it's coming at all at this year's CES, it sure isn't happening tonight.

At this year's press conference, Microsoft's Bill Gates and Robbie Bach busted out some Guitar Hero to close out the night. Originally set up as a duel between the two Microsoft execs, Bach instead called out "Guitar Hero Champion" Kelly Law-Yone, who played through the opening riff of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" on the game's expert mode. Not to be outdone, Gates revealed his big guns -- Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who entered the stage in a cloud of smoke while playing the the game song on one of those "real guitars" we keep hearing about.

What were you expecting? The Xbox 360 Ultimate

Hmmm... I know the Mac FanBoys will love this. ('Course, if Steve Jobs did it, then it'd be wicked awesome.)

that keynote lacked as far as gamers are concerned. Now that warner turned away from a losing cause we will not ,thankfully, see a salvo attempt by microsoft to save hddvd by adding its drive to 360.2. This year will be a great year for the ps3 and bluray and a mediocre 360 year. Iam glad I own all three consoles.

I wasn't expecting an Xbox 360 squared, but this is the important announcement? This is how Bill Gates says fare-thee-well to the industry?

Wow.

Haha, I reckon it's pretty cool. At least Gates isn't afraid to geek out on stage. Still, the thought of Steve Ballmer going nuts on Guitar Hero is just so amazingly awesome I'd suck cock just to see it.

Makes me mad that a Slash/Steve Jobs duo would be considered "cool" but a Slash/Bill Gates duo is considered dumb.

I am sad that I am right though.

I seriously think an Ultimate was on the cards, possibly branded Toshiba and "powered by XBox 360". Rumours of 360 licenced tech were just too strong to discount the idea.

The licencing is important because I don't think MS would dare stick an HD DVD in their own lineup in case it turned into the Titanic and 360's brand reputation got sucked down with it.

The WB thing probably saved them from even that worry. I wouldn't be surprised if they did have a model ready to announce but they got such a kick in the balls that plans have been shelved indefinitely. It would be interesting to see the original slides or hear some trustworthy insider talk of what was originally in the works.

DrXym makes a very good point. I am guessing that the WB announcement along with New Line Cinema just pushed for a different announcement.

As dumb as it sounds I am kinda happy about the Marketplace announcement as I am all for Digital Distros. Maybe this will bump MS to expand it's library even further, and possibly outside of just dling from the internet. Would love to see 360 kiosks at retailers I could dl full games from.

Slash rock! I love is "sloppy" guitar style. IMO GH3 should be legend of rock. no S at legend. And the only legend is Slash. Tom morello..comon that's no guitar legend. Is there any other oe in GH3?
