CBS to broadcast WSVG events; ESPN to counter with Stuart Scott peeing on ducks photo

In what will no doubt be hailed as a huge step forward for the legitimization of gaming as an actual sport, the World Series of Video Games announced earlier today that they've entered into an agreement with CBS to televise four event recap sessions beginning this summer. Featured games will include Quake 4, Guitar Hero 2, and the World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade

While many may scoff at the athleticism involved in gaming, the let's-bury-this-sh*t-in-the-middle-of-summer timeslot, or the fact that this isn't a CSI spinoff, I'm sure tens of people will be eagerly glued to their televisions, cheering on that guy, the other one, and that dude with the hat.

I still think video games as a spectator sport is, for the most part, bullshit. There are a few games that can possibly pull it off (Perhaps DDR, and as we have seen from South Korea, Star Craft) but anything else will produce nothing but snores from the audience.

Competitive Guitar Hero 2? That's going to be horrible.
And WoW? Fuck. Could they not do Halo 2, Gears, Rainbow Six:Vegas, Madden, hell, even Worms? Any one of those games would be better than seeing which guy can memorize Jessica on Expert better.

I'd watch it.

But only if the losers die.
That'll guarantee the ratings.

Stuart scott would probably say "boo-yah" or something while he's peeing on the duck, and then "Check if you're bleeding, duck, cause you just got tagged!" And then he'd have a new and even more horribly ridiculous tie on after the commercial break. And then someone would inexpicably hire him as host for another show, probably "masterpiece theatre."

Ok I'm done.

@everyone

Guitar Hero is amazing to not only play but watch the way we have it setup. It’s going to be a concert atmosphere with a set of judges, one being a celebrity not yet named, who will then be judging on their performance not just score. World of Warcraft is based off of the 3vs3 PVP Arena system on a Private server provided by Blizzard and pre-made characters. Players will choose from a list of pre-determined gear (I think you get the point it's not their own characters) so the gear>skill controversy won't arise. Each event has 4 Circuit Games that stay the same (Guitar Hero II, WoW, Quake 4 and Fight Night Round 3) with official titles changing at each event. If you take a look at www.ThwWSVG.com you can see the rules for each game and how we have them organized.

--"an actual sport"? Gaming is a competition, and the gamers are talented at what they do, but gaming is not a sport. No way. Come on, people still make fun of *golf* and say that's not a sport...you think gaming will ever be even a somewhat legitimate sport?

Is checkers a sport? No? Then playing video games isn't either. Watching other people play video games just makes me wish they would hurry up and die quicker so I can have my turn at the controller. Only watching this crap on television is even more lame since I don't get to play at all, I'm just watching these idiots who aren't my friends play whatever shooter or real time strategy game is hot at the moment.
