Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Mainstream news wouldn't exist without fanning the flames of controversy, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more adorable set of billows than Katie Couric. In the above clip, Ms. Kittenpuff Couric -- or, more specifically, her underlings -- takes a look at the controversy surrounding Manhunt 2, and shockingly they manage to avoid the typical mainstream news gaffes. No one refers to any system or game using the catch-all term "a Nintendo," there's very little sense of condescension (at least in the reporting), and overall, the tone seems evenhanded, if slightly cliché (cue soothing British Ph.D. at 1:32).

Of course, this sort of coverage is not aimed at gamers. According to traditional Hollywood wisdom, if it were, Katie would be half naked and the Master Chief would be standing behind her grilling a hamburger and wearing a backwards fluorescent baseball cap with the words "Sit On It" scrawled across the front. Sadly it seems there is no happy middle ground between pandering to middle America and pandering to concepts of cool from a decade ago, at least as far as gaming in the media is concerned, so I suppose we have to make a choice.

Well, at least Katie is adorable ...

Real gamers? I think real gamers would be talking about the game play and how it controls. If that was me I wouldn't be saying "Oh they made this just because it's violent". Stupid hired people.

I care about gameplay, controls, graphics etc. I dont care about how violent it is, or whether it will corrupt the children

That Scott Steinberg guy looks funny. The TV says he is a video game reviewer. Fuck, he is in teh wrong business and whoever pays him way too much money doesn't know what the fuck they are doing.

"I am going to lure him out into the open, and then chop him up." As he says this his character is getting beaten and he is jerking his right up and down and looks absolutely retarded. That is total immersion.

Honestly, I grew a great, big chub when the guy pointed out the parental controls on the Wii. No joke.

System-based parental controls are always always ALWAYS ignored by Thompson and his ilk, and it's great to see that a reporter can actually do a bit of research and realize that yes, these functions are here and that yes, parents SHOULD utilize them, but not only do the research, but also INFORM people that these systems have these controls and that they can use them for the benefit of their children.

Basically, he's saying that parents should take responsibility for their children, and take an active roll in what they can and cannot watch or play. It was refreshing.

Rockstar is a company known for pushing the limits of the medium in terms of content, and Manhunt 2 is no exception. I don't want to play the game at all, because anonymous kill-fests aren't really something I am into. The kids can enjoy it, though.

those "hardcore" gamers need to go and shove their heads in a blender.
hopefully now that someone in the mainstream pointed out there is
a parental lock and code on all 3 consoles we will start to see this spreading a bit more.

just have to sugar coat it for the parents. its not like they have to actually physically be around their kids or interact they can still sit them in front of the television and let that baby sit the monsters.

This game really isn't that much more violent that Gears, it just has "stabbing motions" didn't see anyone get pissed when Zelda: TP came out. That has sword motions!! Come on mainstream media...You don't see Destructiod trying to report about the situation in Iraq. They don't report on crap they don't know anything about. I would also like to know how much the "Tech" reporter knows about games. He is no Michael Patcher.

That report was actually not as bad as I was expecting. They did show that ridiculous group of outraged parents, but they also pointed out that the game is rated M, meaning parents shouldn't be buying it for their kids anyway. Bonus points for actually educating people about the ESRB rating system, and the fact that you can lock out certain ratings through the console.

I was complaining about this last night. It's so stupid. The game is rated M for "Mature" or 17+ if you will. Yet they insist on going into the repercussions of a child playing it... O_o

A child should never play this game unless the parent thinks there is some sort of lesson to be learned by playing such a game. At least they did actually say that there is no proven link between games and violence, but they sure as hell implied it in the dialogue.

I'm also glad they went into the Wii menu and showed that parents can do something about kids trying to play games rated higher than their parents would like behind their backs. That was a classy move IMO. Overall, I'd say they spent too much time on unproven theories about games and violence and not enough time on what parents should be doing.

Now if we could only get an AO game in the US. That would be something.

That was a pretty decent report, especially with the ending, calling the parents to do their content homework. Katie's comment at the end was a bit pissy, but otherwise fine.

Nex, please say "half-naked Katie Couric" again, kthx.

Can I just point out that you all need to shut the fuck up in general, actually? Except the ones who agree with me that is.

This is the best televised report on games that I have ever seen.

It's still not perfect, but as far as middle ground goes, as far as rational, logical, unbiased common sense goes, it's getting there, and that's what we should be focusing on. In a perfect world, we'd all be totally understanding of everyone's point of view, we'd all be loving and comforting to all of our fellow conscious entities, and news broadcasts would give glowing reviews of every game that pushed the medium as an art form. As it is, however, I'm happy to settle for a game broadcast that isn't a pile of alarmist wank.

Let me just recap some of the things that set this aside from other such broadcasts:
- An expert in psychology who doesn't exaggerate the negative effects of games.
- A person showing how to enable parental controls.
- A description of how the game works as well as story exposition and a video demonstration.
- An explanation of the ESRB rating system.
- A heavy weight on the fact that PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR KIDS.

I hope you enjoyed my opinion. If you didn't like it, then you can screw it up, form it into a barbed 3 dimensional ellipse and apply it the function of an anal infiltration device.

LoL I love at the end Katie saying "Why anyone would want to play that creepy, disturbing game is beyond me." That statement just tickles me pink. And my dear Katie that would be because of the fact that you dont even know what your talking about, and the guy next to you probably dosent either but has some cronies who know a little about the games write up some dialoge for you the pretty little face to read off of a screen.

People shouldn't go off on the hardcore gamers portrade in this. They only said a couple of lines so some of the more positive things for the game may be lost to editing and did they ever personally claim they were hardcore. I imagine if I played this game I would probably still think they just made it violent to be controversial(I do feel that way now and I may rent it to give it a shot but if I have learned anything its that Rockstar likes controversy). Since when was being into violent games been the defining mark of hardcore I think this appeals just as much if not more to a mainstream lite gamer that wants to see what the fuss is about. I would rather play Katamari, Psyconauts, or any other number of games that are actually tring to be fun instead of a game thats main selling point is violence. Not to say violent game cant be fun Bioshock and GoW(both work) are excellect.

The only thing that would've made this report perfectly balanced on the issue would be to mention SAW 4 being number one at the box office this week.

Right after Katie wondered why anyone would want to play that creepy, disturbing game would have been perfect.

Overall, a pretty good look at the game. I'm curious as to why there was no mention of how good the game actually is. I was overjoyed to see them discussing parental controls and parental responsibility for once, plus emphasizing what the game's rating meant.

I love how she says that kids can still get their hands on it despite the rating.

Kids can easily get their hands on a lot of things they aren't supposed to have: porn, alcohol, drugs, guns, R-rated movies...

To all weak ass parents of psyched, vilent kids:

It's not the games fault, it's yours that you haven't used parental control and won't take 5 minutes in a month to check your kids room for such games, don't blame someone else.... you're the real problem!

They clearly weren't game players if they can't follow the clearly stated instructions at the start of every Wii game.

Just for the record, I want to beat senseless with a Wiimote everyone who is critiquing CBS's choice of gamers. Just because they don't look "hardcore" and weren't humming "Chocolate Rain" under their breath, it doesn't mean that they're not proper gamers, whatever that means.
