Cave Story Wii gets closer to release, much more yellow photo

It's good news/bad news time again. Good news first- Cave Story Wii has been resubmitted to Nintendo for approval. The game was supposed to be out months ago, but for reasons unknown, Nintendo has been holding it back. I played a very final-feeling version of the game at E3 this year, which makes me think that the game has been done for a while. The word on the street was that the game's translation needed changing before it could be releases, but I'm guessing that there's more to it than that.

Which brings us to the bad news.

Some mysterious changes have been made to Quote, the game's main character. His iconic red hat and pants have now been replaced with a yellow and brown ensemble that's much less flattering. Happier people than myself are guessing this change signifies DLC palate swaps for Quote, or even better, a new 2-player co-op mode. My guess is that Nintendo thought that the original Quote looked too much like Ash Ketchum, and wouldn't let the game come out until the character was changed. You can see the original Quote sprite, the initial WiiWare revision, and the latest yellowed-up sprite all in the gallery.

So what do you think?  Am I being paranoid, or did Nintendo just force Quote to start dressing like Devo circa 1978?

It's good to see that Wiiware is going more worthwhile games thanks to games like Lost Winds: Winter of the Melodias, Bit.Trip Void, and new upcoming titles like Excitebike: World Ralley, Castlevania: Rebirth, Cave Story, Night Sky, Zombie Panic in Wonderland, And Yet it Moves, Max & the Magic Marker and La Mulana.

Great observation about his likeness to Ash! While I hope they stay true to the original, I don't believe any of us will mind if they have to make such an adjustment.

Just put the damn thing out already!

He did look a bit like Ash, but it's not really enough for me to think Nintendo was paranoid. I honestly think it's a palette swap or Co-op. That would make some sense.

Yellow Cave Story is better than no Cave Story, yeah?

I honestly thought this had already come out months ago, but [insert Wii-gathering-dust joke here].

I have been holding out on playing this game for an entire year ever since I heard it was coming to Wiiware.

GET IT OUT NOW. *sternface*

I don't think the change means copyright stuff, my best bid is that it will be a bonus hability like in Zelda games where you get more offense or defense.

I hope it's just an alternate costume, because that's a much less appealing character design.

I can't wait. I've heard nothing but good about Cave Story, and like WinterSocks, I've been holding out for the Wii version.
Not a fan of the yellow though.

I need a lot more wii points. There's too much great stuff on wiiware that I've been missing out on.

After looking at the Cave Story Twitter, the sprite doesn't seem like a mandatory change.
Also, thanks for the new desktop background, Holmes!

He's still stylin' and looking fabulous so I really don't mind at all.
Then again, I don't really know who this cat is!

I think you are right about Ash Ketchum, and in fact, I thought that when I first played Cave Story on my PC.

I hope he's not Yellow for the sake of the game. I don't own a Wii so I'm not getting it. But if that's his final color, well... I feel sorry for those people who are going to buy it... I'm sure looking at what seems like an oversized zit on their screen, they'll get sick.

This is kind of a nonstory Jonathan Holmes, didn't you read the cavestory twitter? It reads as though it's a special costume.

"Hey, thanks for adding Cave Story! How do you like the new outfit? There's a reason for it, BTW"

you know, if you hadn't said anything about devo i'd probably be a little annoyed, but i think if i look at it in that respect from now on, i will likely enjoy it even more in this yellow form.
"are we not men? we are nintendo"

Does not bother me that much, to be honest I didn't like ash in the first place but he grew on me. I just hope they change the description on their site saying the red cap-wearing hero ^^

I was saving my Wii Points for Cave Story, but spent them months ago after it was clear this wasn't getting released any time soon. Now I'm really glad I didn't wait.

I fear DLC on Cave Story, and quite honestly it's tempering my enthusiasm for the project. The people who knows about CS and have played it on the PC are more likely to let themselves get nickel-and-dimed for a few pixel changes, and I have a feeling they're going all-out with it on this one.

Really hate the new character colors.

It is good this is only a palette swap and you can also switch back to the original music. That being said, this needs to come out already.

For the record, the word has always been that you'll have the option to play original music and graphics. Worst case scenario, the new stuff gets turned off, and you get to play the original Cave Story on your TV.

Via Twitter:

"@cavestory Oo! Does Quote get unlockable outfits/palette swaps?"

"@ZeroXOmega You could be getting warm :)"

I imagine that there are multiple rewards for satisfying certain conditions in the game.

Also, I'll take yellow over boring old red any day. <_<

I think the yellow sprite looks fine, actually. I don't care what color hat he wears as long as I can actually buy this game at some point.

The yellow outfit is actually the chicken suit which Quote wears while playing Easy Mode.
